This is a clear example of how a solid and decent plot due to poor mission creation and non-existant beta testing, can create a disastrous conundrum. Quite frankly, the flaws abound and is hard to pick just one. For example, there is a mission in which 4 enemy capital ships run together to shoot down a single MIS and fly like nimble starfighters, and of course is so much fun to make them bonk heads against each other, like the Three Stooges of Space. Another mission sees a full squadron of Y-Ws ramming in tight formation like kamikazes against a carrier in Midway, a solitary ATR which you need to defend and irremediably goes down in flames every time, because of these rebel human driven V1 bomb wannabes. The briefings are mediocre, and again, the plot and initial layouts are not bad at all, but the mission development is so bad, that it could be taken as an excellent example for the MCBS or TM/3 courses of what NOT to do. There is nothing more hilarious and frustrating than seeing a rebel CRS behind your tail locking your six every time you bank off or check the rear and a couple of frigates embedded in it, while maneuvering!. A total disaster that actually was sometimes fun to fly, like watching a comedy.
The plot was a solid meh, although the actual flying itself was fun. I am still mad at Plif for making me fly a battle where I had to fly a missile boat, the one craft I probably hate more than a TIE Bomber. The last mission is awful. It takes nearly 15 minutes to complete, and I lost it a couple times. The key is to make sure that you’re protecting the freighters and NOT the heavy lifters like the tips tell you. I am not sure why it even says that. Interestingly, I went to the bathroom for a solid 5 minutes while waiting for the lifters do their thing, and some X Wings flew in. They didn’t even target me. You can get right up next to basically all the ships and they will completely ignore you. Be sure to destroy any bomber ships that come in.
The plot is okay. Classic attack against a Rebel base, protected by various ships. You soften the target in the first missions and, well, I let you guess what's the finale. The missions are well done, exception for a secondary goals in mission 2 I think, that is impossible to do. Not sure if it's the same mission too but there's a seemingly never ending wave of A-Wings, and it's just boring. Overall, it's easy, as you fly the missile boat..and it's overpowered, but not memorable. Something to recommend to get a Squadron Citation, but nothing more.
The plot of this battle was sort of okay although the battle had its problems visible throughout the battle. It seems impossible (at least on hard difficulty) to complete secondary goals in mission 2 (see bug report). Throughout the battle a lot of capital ships work on fighter orders (see the bug report again). It's kind of funny to see a Calmari Cruiser circle around trying to chase your missile boat. You can of course use it to your advantage, letting it do damage to the platform and vice versa. Please note that enemy fighters tend to bail out when they get damaged too harshly. It's especially annoying with A-Wings when you shoot a missile at them first. It does not quite kill it (7% hull left) but then the A-Wing bails. When it gets close to hyperspace point it just turns immportal and jumps anyway even if you unleash hell on it. Word of advice, damage shields with cannon first then just finish it off with 1 missile. It was still quite a challenging battle to fly, given there's plenty of enemies and each seem loaded with advanced missiles. Having starships dancing around doesn't help. Be ready to crash a lot when dogfighting. Not really fun flying here.
An average battle. The basic plot's not bad, although some of the military goals seem to get a bit muddled towards the end, and the last mission doesn't seem to finish the plot completely (was a sequal planned and never done?). And the trick to the mission with the beetle is that another transport picks up the loads. I agree, this was confusing.
An excellent, well constructed 4 mission battle. Quick and relativly easy to complete. Would have got a 5 from me if the briefings would have been a little better and the Cap ships didn't have starfighter orders!!
I liked the military style tactical/strategic goals of this battle.
In mission 2, the ATR boards only one of the Corvettes then leaves the combat area. Thus achieveing a secondary goal in this mission (100% Corvettes (2) boared) is impossible. It appears that throughout the battle the stations and most of capital ships fly on fighter orders. This is especially visible in mission 3 which is just one giant collision fest.
