Battle Reviews

I REALLY wanted to like this one more. It has everything I love, custom audio, detailed "storyline" and all but the battles have very little connection to each other, the extra plot lines are very obtuse with nothing really drawing the person in and it is a slog to read them. The first mission I found ridiculously hard to do anything but pop the frigate and take a random shot at the fighters chasing me. Luckily the whole point of the mission was to keep the fighters interested in you and not the transport with you. The second mission is a inspect everything before they fly way style one which are not my favorite. The third was ok, just taking out some capitol ships and fighters, and strangely enough my favorite mission was the last where you fly and unshielded T/I in a dogfighting contest. I usually hate them but the combination of how the enemies came in, and the high AI of your wingman made it fun, not terrible.

I played on Easy with cheats. This battle is a mixed bag. The early missions are well done and then the later missions are a grindy and slow-paced.

Not the best, but not the worst collection of missions. There is no overarching plot - it's just random missions. The second was started off more interesting than most custom missions, but then just sort of ended. The fourth was funny as with its reference, but it went on too long.

Those missions are definitely 'lost' and rightfully so. There is no relation between them and they are not even interesting by themselves.

A bundle of different missions with unclear relative plotilines among them. The missions are not bad, some are a bit more cryptic than others and that makes a bit of a mess, and confusing the player of what to do. The last mission is a 2v2 unshielded T/Is madness, that really turned into frustrating after killing the 30th and seeing there were more to serve in order to finish the Primary Objectives!. This was totally unnecessary. If you want to waste your time like that, go into the simulator, but take no credit for it.

As a collection of unrelated missions, it's OK. The first three go together well, but the last one is completely unrelated. That last mission is enough to lower my rating significantly. There's no need to have T/Is hyper to different regions, and flying an unshielded, hyper-equipped T/I against shielded T/Is seems unfair. And 10 waves of said shielded T/Is is too much.

So this wasn't really a battle. It's just a collection of random missions that are fraught with inside references and jokes. A note to everyone - 15 years later? None of that ages well. I did like the throwback WoW and MSN Zone references, so I'm tacking on a point for that. But other than for something like RtF or FCHG points? I'd skip.

People who give this 0s and 1s should look a tad deeper into this battle. The battle is pretty much made to have four missions that don't exactly follow each other...But thats the Ender style. My point is that it deserves at least a 2 or 3 because it didn't make me want to cry or anything. It didn't exactly make my day either.

Yes,OK is not a super battle, but there are worst in XWA.I like the idea of flight the Toscan Fighter or the T/I without shields.Mission 3 had here and there some details to see and we must hyper to find the combat area.Mission 4, well the dogfight is interesant, only the exit position of the enemies T/I are very near of the actual combat position of the friendly T/Is.

things i dont like about this battle: -No storyline -Stupid bugs (ATRs DESTROY the inspected craft instead of disabling and capturing, resultiong in a LOSS) -Why do i battle 8 squadrons of a-wings and xwings for ONE HYPERDRIVE, ánd i survive that encounter :/ (20-3 odds) -Hornet sqd does not fly Toscan fighters, and why not use the TIE/A or TIE/D for inspection duties? -useless random Starwars quotes things i liked about this battle: -made me feel a good pilot cuz i destroyed 342658235 awings and xwings without heving to reload shields

Just... fly to get it on your record, ok? Don't think about anything else.

Er... I'm still trying to figure out what I should call this. First of all, this appears to be a gathering of several loose missions, which do not follow each other up in any way (the note added to mission #3 stating it was originally an Xvt Free mission stressing this). Reading the storyline doc-files doesn't help. I also wondered what the 4th storyline DOC had to do with the 4th mission :/ (2vs2 mp simulated as a mission battle???) Mission #1 had you placed against incredible odds, mission #2 and #4 had you basically do nothing and mission #3 was somewhere in between these. This battle was annoying and terrible to fly. I rated it 1, because all missions were flyable and had no bugs, apart from capital ships flying through each other in mission #1.

Terrible battle, the plot made no sense, installation was confusing, the last mission was so incredibly easy and pointless, I killed all the enemies before they could target me.

Not that great. Some installation instructions would have been nice.

The missions don't seem to fit together as a continous battle, but each mission is fairly nice and fun to play.

Muhahahahah! for a good one: read first the storylines and then the TAC comments in update.txt and notice they didn't read the storylines;) For the rest its an excellent battle of course O:-D

Mission 1: Transport craft crash into the Pyrath Naval Base. A-Wing group Wraith alert Rebel forces only when their last wave arrives (and the message appears regardless of whether the player has destroyed all Rebel capital ships in the area).

Or else gunboats in the other missions will look like they are on some disco-trip;)

- Place the OPTfile in your FLIGHTMODELS folder.
- rename ASSAULTGUNBOAT.OPT to ASSAULTGUNBOATbk.OPT or something like that.
- to change your gunboats back, reverse procedure.

Battle description
These are the missions described in Vanguard in teractive Battle (ViB) Prologue
chapters but were never actually made or released as XWA missions, the main platform of
the Vanguard. This battle tries to solve that problem and in principle it covers the
History of the Vanguard since September 2000 plus it explains where this M/FTR the Luggage
came from anyway (which features in about every Vanguard battle;) )

Story Lines
also see http://www.gimmie.tudelft.nl/homes/blok10b/ender/vanguard/vib/
Storyline1.doc, deals with the storyline of Mission 1 ViB Prologue -I: "Lost Luggage"
Storyline2.doc, deals with the storyline of Mission 2 ViB Prologue II: "Customs Inspection"
Storyline3.doc, deals with the storyline of Mission 3 ViB Prologue V: "Patrol"
Storyline4.doc, deals with the storyline of Mission 4 ViB Prologue VII: "Week of War"

You need the XWA (or at least all the ships involved there), you need the S-Foils patch to
be able to fly the Gunboat in mission 1. You are not required to use the custom Gunboat
if you don't want to.

Read the Storylines, they include a lot of hints.

All wavs generated by At&T labs and Bell Labs Text to sound generators. All have been
reduced to at max. 11.025Hz 8bit Mono (EH TAC requirement) with Windows Media Recorder,
sometimes editted with CoolEdit Pro (trimming, amplification).

Other Information

This is the First release. Bugs could arrise - please
mail me if they do - also if you have hints, death threats,
questions or apraisals.
