While the fundamental premise of the plot is time manipulation nonsense, it's still a pleasure to see it unfold from there. The briefings are well made, the missions are well crafted with a very healthy amount of challenge on Hard - some missions change completely based on difficulty, which is a very nice polishing touch. An excellent battle !
My thirty-first battle in the TIE Corps.

Storyline:
Despite not being enough room for story on the game engine, they managed to build an interesting, consistent, original storyline that caught my interest and delivered a lot of immersion. More than enough information was given on the briefings with the help of the on-screen text tags. A consistent story across all missions.
Technical aspects:
Very well designed , balanced and with variety. It was challenging enough. Liked as I said, the detail of the text tags providing extra info on the briefing. I like how they use XvT limited resources to suggest the existence of new objects like the ring.
Tactical:
With all the information, it was pretty straightforward to figure out what to do. Doesn't mean there is no challenge, it only means you've got a clear view on what is going on. In general terms, the tactics aren't hard. The focus here is on the story itself and on dogfighting.
Briefings:
Good briefings, good grammar. You're told all you need and even more.
All missions are pretty fun. Recommend this battle 5/5. The kind of battle that makes the EH compendium interesting.

A really cool battle. Sometimes the waiting times were a bit too long, expecially in the last one. But in general really well done. Thank you!

I played this on hard. I have a love-hate relationship with this one. Right off the bat, you are thrown into a situation whereby you have to evade a ton of missiles while dogfighting your way out of a mess. But then M1 gets a bit better and that was a glimpse of some "better" game design on the part of the creator. M2, M3, and M4 were uneventful and then you reach M5.
On hard M5 is dempsey-esque in its difficulty and the way you need to fly it. Lots and lots of tight spots, miss one and the frigate is dead. Even after the Frigate is safe, it still tries to punch you in the gut one last time.
I was bordering on a 4/5 for most of the time. But given the amount of work into the story itself, the briefing and the gameplay, I decided to go for a 5/5, especially since the craft you fly were fit for purpose. The right fighter for the right fight in every mission, so that pushed it to 5/5 in the end. I hadn't flown XvT for a while, so I was rusty but I'm still sure people may struggle a bit in M1 and especially M5.

A good series of missions with a detailed and interesting plotline. The briefings were very well done and the readme gave good background information. The use of various flyable craft with different objectives from dogfighting, to cap ship busting to capture kept it fun. There were some periods of downtime that I wished for ALT-T.

Any battle featuring Wing VIII is always touching my sentimental fibers. And this is no different. The campaign has an original and excellent plotline. The briefings are absolutely of the best you will see in XvT. The missions range from easily completable to an impossible nightmare, depending on the chose level of difficulty. But somehow it covers all squadrons in the mighty ISD Colossus, and features the deadliest of the fleet, Eta Squadron. A golden classic suitable for all pilots and skills. Do not miss this one!.

This could pose a serious threat to us if the Rebels are able to claim the power of time. We are under orders to engage the facility and destroy it before the test is completed. The Rebels must not gain this technology.. at any cost. Story Line ---------- [View Plotline.txt for the debriefings and mission hints.] 1. "Shadow of Time - Race Against Time" Background: The [Rebels] have been developing a secret research project near [Traxis Prime.] This project involves [Temporal Mechanics] on an un-thought of scale. Once completed, the facility will have the ability to send a ship forwards or backwards through time. Our spies have been keeping tabs on this for some time but only recently we have learned the actual location of the facility. Our reports indicate that it could be operational within the next twenty-four hours. We must strike now, before the facility becomes operational and the [Rebels] gain any advantage in this war. Objectives: You will engage all the [installation defence craft] in preperation for the main attack against the station led by the [Colossus.] By all accounts, the defences are pretty weak and you should have no problems in crippling them. However, reinforcements may arrive which you will have to deal with. Player Craft: You will fly as [Tie Advanced Nu 2] in a four-man flight group under the command of [Darknyte.] For this mission, your craft has been armed with [8 Advanced Concussion Missiles] and you will also have the [Tractor Beam] at your disposal. Reinforcements will be available in the shape of [Tie Defenders] from [Mu Squadron.] Opposition: The station's defence forces are somewhat limited, only a handful of [X-Wings] and [A-Wings] could stop you in your mission. There is also at least one capital ship in the area. Other forces will deal with this. The [Rebels] may attempt to reinforce their position however, and you will be expected to engage them. 2. "Shadow of Time - Paradox Theorum" Background: The [Colossus] has arrived in the past but as yet, we have not seen the [Rebel Ship] we chased here. It is possible that with the effects of the [temporal vortex,] they either arrived at another location or some time before we did. Our scientists are trying to develop a tracking system as we speak so we may locate this missing ship. While we have been waiting and researching, we have received a distress call from an [Imperial] base. The code used is an old, ultra-secret cipher so we can assume that whatever is going on at the facility, it is [very] important. As such, [VA Mell] has ordered our forces to go in. As little contact will be made with the personnel in this time period as possible, They must not find out about our true time-period. Objectives: Your mission is to go and eliminate the [Rebels] that are attacking the facility while protecting all the [Imperial] assets in the area. [Lieutenant Colonel Drake] will accompany you in his personal fighter, [Doombringer.] He will be in overall command of the mission, pay attention to his radio messages. It is indeed possible that any [Imperial fighter pilots] in the area will have never seen a [Tie Advanced] before and therefore, may see you as a threat. If this happens, do not shoot back at them. You have shields and they don't. Take the hits if you have to. Player Craft: You will fly in [Tie Advanced Nu 2] as the second member of a four-man flight group led by [Darknyte.] Since we do not know what you will be up against, we have given you a double load of [16 Advanced Concussion Missiles.] This should cater for every eventuality. Your craft has also been fitted with the [tractor beam.] Reinforcements will be available on request. Opposition: Unfortunately, we do not know. So be prepared. If it is the ship we are after then they could have anything, If not, then there still may be [X-Wings, Y-Wings] or any craft from that sort of era. 3. "Shadow of Time - Neighbourhood Scum" Background: The [Colossus] has been stuck in the past with no way of tracking the [Rebel Ship] we chased here. That was until a few days ago when our scientists discovered that any ship travelling through the [temporal vortex] has its hull ionised so it gives of increased amounts of [theta-band] radiation. We have since tracked the [Rebel Ships] course since arriving in this time frame to this station. Their reasons for being here are unclear at this time, so a large-scale capture operation will be launched to discover just what this assorted scum told them. Objectives: You will fly a ['Wild Weasel'] mission. These are very dangerous missions which involve being shot at. You will draw fire away from [ATR Sigma] so that it may disable the platform. You will also be tasked to disable any [fleeing shuttles] that may attempt to leave the area. You will be working as part of a team from the [Colossus,] each flight group of which has individual flight orders. However, your mission is more important than everyone else's. Player Craft: You will fly as [Mu 2] as the second man in a two man flight group commanded by [Absolut Vodka.] For this mission, your craft has been fitted with [Magnetic Pulse] warheads however, they are in short supply. Depending on the difficulty level you select will give you your warhead load. [Easy] players will get 16 Mag Pulses. [Medium] players will get 8 and [Hard] players will only get four. Your craft will also be fitted with a [Jamming Beam] for you to disrupt the enemies fire-control systems with. Opposition: Station defences are limited to some antiquated [Z-95's] and [R-41's] which should pose no significant problems to the patrolling craft. The only threat to you is the station itself, it is heavily armed with at least six turbo laser turrets and many smaller guns. Most importantly is the [warhead launcher.] Everything else can be easily dodged, Missiles home in on you. 4. "Shadow of Time - Sacrifice to the Gods" Background: During our recent operation, we captured several persons which (under interrogation) provided us valuable information about the [Rebels] plans. One of these was an [Imperial Officer] who helped the Rebels track down an Imperial pilot under the name of Ronin. This is our [Fleet Commander] in the past! We can safely assume that the [Rebels] have not come here to congratulate him on his future promotion.. Therefore, we have to move to intercept them before they can launch their strike against [Ronin.] Our [Tacticians] have thrown us an interesting lifeline. A [Galactic Trade Council] convoy is passing through the area nearby and the [Rebels] will more than likely respond in assistance, if they send a distress signal. Then we can trap them at this location, far away from [Ronin.] Objectives: The primary goal of this mission is to entice the [Rebel Cruiser] into the area by destroying the [GTC Convoy.] Of course, the convoy will have to send a signal first and to guarantee it, we are going to board the [GTC Ships] and plant a fake signal. Provided the [Rebels] are not alerted to our presence, they should respond immediately. Once the ship comes into the area, our forces will converge on it to try and knock out its engines. You may also have to destroy a large part of its [star fighter defences.] But this is all bonus, Just getting the [Cruiser] to fall into the trap is enough. Player Craft: You will fly as [Tie Defender Eta 2] in a three-man flight group under the command of [Indaro.] For this mission, you craft has been armed with a standard load of [8 Advanced Concussion Missiles.] Support will come from [Nu Squadrons Missile Boats] if you so require them. Opposition: The [Convoy] itself is not armed and poses no threat. The [Cruiser] on the other hand is a significant threat. Capable of carrying many advanced fighter types into battle. Whatever the [Rebels] have access to is what this cruiser will carry. 5. "Shadow of Time - Past Prologue" Background: The [Cruiser Dominance] was stopped in our previous engagement after suffering a critical hit to its engine system. It is immobilised in space but can still fight. Our problem is that it houses the [recaller] device which we need to get back home with. We can not disable the ship as the feedback may cripple the device. Our only hope is to literally rip it out of the cruiser. To this end, a special assault team has been selected to dock with the cruiser, fight its way to it and get out. This is a very tricky operation and must be taken with the utmost care. This is a one-shot deal too, If the transport is destroyed then there will be no-one to take its place. Objectives: The primary goals of this mission is to capture the [Recaller] from the Rebel Cruiser. To accomplish this, we must first destroy the remaining [Star fighters] and then draw fire away from the boarding craft. Only then will we stand a chance of capturing the device intact. Player Craft: You will fly as [Tie Defender Eta 2] in a four-man flight group under the command of [Indaro.] For this mission, you craft has been armed with a standard load of [8 Advanced Concussion Missiles] and you will have a tractor beam installed. Support will come from [Omicron Squadrons Tie Defenders] if you so require them. Opposition: Star fighter defences took a pounding in the last battle however, they are expected to still have some operational fighters. More [X-Wings, Y-Wings] and [A-Wings] are likely. The [Cruiser] itself is (apart from its engines) fully operational, we have detected warheads in its launchers so look sharp and stay alive. 6. "Shadow of Time - Fight the Future" Background: The [Colossus] has captured the recaller and saved [Ronin,] Now it's time to head home. While we have been away, [G'Neeznow] and [Luxor] have secured the area around the gate so we can safely arrive however, that may not last and our forces have been placed on high alert for our arrival. Once we arrive, our fighters will launch and patrol around the capital ships. The stations staff and information will be transferred to the [Colossus] for further research in the future. If the [Rebels] have been attacking in force, we may also need to destroy the station. We can not allow it to fall into their hands. Objectives: The objective for this mission is for the [Colossus] to safely leave the area. However, If [Rebels] show up then the destruction of the facility will also be a primary goal. We do not want to lose any ships in this mission if we can help it, So the survival of [G'neeznow] and [Luxor] is a secondary goal. Player Craft: You will fly as [Missile Boat Pi 2] in a four-man flight group under the command of [Nivarian.] For this mission, your craft has been armed with [20 heavy rockets] in addition to the [40 Advanced Concussion Missiles] already carried. Your craft will also be loaded with a [tractor beam.] Reinforcements from the [Colossus] will be available on request and a transport will be dispatched to reload your craft as soon as you run out of warheads. Opposition: This is currently unknown. We have had no communication with our ships since we left and therefore have no idea of the strength of the [Rebels.] Be wary. NOTE ------------------- You need XvT (or at least all the ships involved there) AND the EH Shippatch. To fly as a team all players need the same version, make sure you all have the update by lucasarts installed. As usual, it is another of my battles that is six missions long, enabling me to develop the plot line as much as I can. One thing I don't like is making battles in a time period, I was planning a load of wonderful surprises but eventually ran out of time. The final changes were laid down on the very last night of the competition. It still was fun to make, even if I was tearing my hair out towards the end. RSV/LC Drake/M-FRG Phoenix - version 2: The original TIE Fighter 95 version by GN Drake is one of the most heavily decorated battle on the EH mission Compendium. Besides a current rating of 4.8 out of 5, it also won the Golden Tug Awards in 2002 as "Best TIE Battle of 2001", "Best Technical Realisation of 2001" and "Best TIE Briefings of 2001" and it won the FCHG Competition of 2001 in the category of TIE (which it was made to do.) The release of the Emperor's Hammer Ship patch made it possible to make full conversions of TIE battles for XvT - And what better choice then what is apparently one of the best TIE battles around? This conversion was made using more then just "tie2xvt", about every aspect except the actual texts was changed to get better results in XvT - however great care was taken to retain the same atmosphere as the TIE version had. Title: Wing VIII: Shadow of Time Missions: 6 Medal: Chronas Crescent Authors: TOA/GN Drake/SSSD Sovereign (Drake@EHnet.org) Debriefings: ------------ 1. "Shadow of Time - Race Against Time" We have successfully taken control of the installation, but not before a [Rebel Cruiser] jumped through the gate. This has significantly changed the timeline and the [Colossus] is preparing to jump to where ever they jumped to. We can not allow the [Rebels] to change the course of history as they see fit. The [G'Neeznow] and the [Luxor] will hold station at the mouth of the gate to ensure that we have a safe trip home... when we come home 2. "Shadow of Time - Paradox Theorum" We were successful in stopping the [Rebels] in their attack of the installation. While it is clear that the [Rebels] were definitely from this time period, what is not clear is how they managed to find the research platform for the [Tie Advanced.] It could be just shear coincidence or, at worst, the [Rebels] have gained knowledge of this project and are attempting to stop us developing our fighters. Either way, we are certain that the project succeeds, else our advanced fighters would have vanished when the timeline would have been changed. Sensor readings from the last battle are being inspected as we speak but they have already confirmed one thing - the presence of [Zaarin] at the research facility. However, if we had acted on our instincts to destroy him, there could have been untold changes to the timeline. We cannot risk anything without knowing the consequences of our actions. 3. "Shadow of Time - Neighbourhood Scum" You were instrumental in the success of this mission by disabling all the shuttles. You also drew fire for [Sigma] long enough for it to disable the platform. A very good job done indeed. You stuck around to ensure the capture operation went without a hitch. Luckily for us, it didn't. Interrogations are commencing immediately on the captured scum which includes an [Imperial Officer.] We should be able to discover the exact intentions of the Rebel operation within a few hours. 4. "Shadow of Time - Sacrifice to the Gods" We have trapped the [Cruiser] in the area after taking a series of crippling hits to its engines. They will not be able to intercept [Ronin] now. Unfortunately, a group of [Escort Transports] were observed leaving the cruiser in the battle who [will] be able to attack [Ronin!] He isn't out of the woods yet. Report to the briefing room immediately so we can save [Ronin!] We managed to get all of the [GTC Personnel] off their ships before we blew them up. While this might not sound like an achievement, any one of those crew could have had drastic effects on the timeline if we had killed them in cold blood. We just can't take that chance. 5. "Shadow of Time - Past Prologue" Our forces were successful in capturing the [Recaller] and finally put the [Rebels] to the sword. We now have the means to return home when we want. Plans are being made for our return to our own time frame. Thanks to your efforts, we can now go home 6. "Shadow of Time - Fight the Future" The [Colossus] managed to leave the area and, despite a heavy [Rebel] attack, the facility was destroyed. A fantastic job done by all concerned. We are to report back to [Aurora Prime] to tell of our findings and our little adventure in the past. Early indications show that all is as it should be, Only time will tell if that assumption is a correct one.... You managed to protect the other two Imperial Capital ships, [G'Neeznow] and [Luxor] long enough for them to successfully jump. Saving a great deal of Imperial lives and equipment in the process. Well done. Mission Hints: -------------- 1. "Shadow of Time - Race Against Time" At the start of the mission, attack the [X-Wings] which are directly in front of you. If you wish, perform an inspection of the cruiser too while lining up your attack. The fighters are relatively easy to destroy. When the fleet arrives, circle the area and be prepared to engage anything that enters the battle. The [M/FRG Luxor] can easily destroy the [Dreadnought] that arrives so attack the [X-Wings] that are launched. 2. "Shadow of Time - Paradox Theorum" When you arrive, set-up your craft and target the [Escort Carrier.] This launches the craft which attack the installation. You need not worry about the craft attacking [Zaarin's Shamus] (Y-Wing Gold) as his own fighters will deal with them. Don't forget to order your wingmen to engage targets, especially the [X-Wings] while you handle the [Y-Wings.] Hard players need to be aware of any [Z-95's] that are launched, as they directly attack the [Tie Advanced Prototypes.] Once all the fighters are destroyed, attack the [capital ships] using your missiles to destroy turrets. Attack the [escort carrier] first, then the [cruiser.] On hard, a [Frigate] will arrive to attack the station, but you should continue your attacks against the other ships. As the [Frigate] will not try to escape into hyperspace. 3. "Shadow of Time - Neighbourhood Scum" When you arrive, immediately target the station and launch one [mag pulse] at it. Target the warhead launcher and destroy it with your lasers as you pass. Fire another mag pulse into the station once the first ones effects have worn off. Listen to [Drake] throughout the mission. He will tell you when shuttles that you need to disable are launched from the station. Ignore all the fighters until all the shuttles and the platforms have been disabled. 4. "Shadow of Time - Sacrifice to the Gods" A relatively simplistic mission which requires an element of patience. While it is tempting to go ahead and attack the powered-down ships, Wait until after the [Assault Transports] have boarded each of them. Alternatively, you can blast each ship down to minimal hull and finish them off after the docking is complete. Once the [Assault Transports] are done, three [Transports] will be dispatched to destroy the ships. As quick as you can, destroy all the stationary ships before the transports get them. (Note: In the many runs the creator has made at this mission, at no time has he destroyed [every] ship.) Provided the boarding went without a hitch, the [Cruiser] will arrive shortly after the last ship is destroyed. It will launch fighters which you must deal with. Concentrate on the [X-Wings] and [Y-Wings] at first until they are all destroyed then take down the [T-Wings] and the [A-Wings.] Do not go anywhere near the cruiser. You cannot destroy it so don't bother trying. When the [Escort Transports] are launched, you can intercept some of them, but because of the tight formation be prepared to attract a lot of fire! 5. "Shadow of Time - Past Prologue" Target the [Y-Wing] in front of you and order your wingmen to engage. Meanwhile, target [A-Wing Blue] and attack it yourself. Once that is destroyed, begin clearing the defences. [Omega] does not come under serious threat for a while. Once the defences are cleared, use your wingmen as 'targets' and order them to attack the cruiser. Cripple the cruisers warhead launchers with dual missiles and destroy all the laser turrets. Keep firing at it until [Omega] has completed its operation, then disable. Kill the cruiser but stay alert for any craft fleeing it. 6. "Shadow of Time - Fight the Future" This mission was designed from the outset to have two separate paths to proceed by. What triggers it is the attacking [Modified Corvettes] early on in the mission. Depending on which pair you destroy first, the mission is totally different. If you destroy [Slayer] first, Fighters will arrive. Destroy [Slasher] and more Modified Corvettes show up. Which ever path you chose, this mission is hard, even on easy. Pay attention to your warning lights and modulate your shields. Don't be afraid to order your wingmen in either, they can draw fire away from you a lot of the time.
