RHO SQUADRON REPORT #17

REPORTING OFFICER: Rear Admiral Alexandre Morgan, Squadron Commander

RECIPIENTS: General Gilbert H. Frown, Wing II; cc: Rho Squadron

DATE SUBMITTED: 05.02.2023

SQUADRON COMMANDER'S CORNER

(Rho Squadron Commander Alexandre Morgan sat at his desk, filling out some form or another. It still felt new, even though it had now been two and a half months. He hadn’t updated the group picture in his office yet, and was very glad he hadn’t: several new recruits had filled in slots and had already all acquitted themselves extraordinarily.

Speaking of the new recruits, he suddenly remembered he had scheduled a special session in the sims with them, his SQXO, LC fr0Zen, and Rho Squadron’s ace combat pilot, CPT FamePlane. He walked as quickly as he could down the halls of the ISDII Warrior, and upon entering the room found them all circled around the LC and the CPT already: Maston Dane, who had spent the majority of his non-flying time at the Suggestion Office with beyond-genius contributions; Isabis Kamaria, the holo-art and helmet design genius; Davy Jonez, the prolific pilot who in the span of a week flew over twenty-five engagements, and the newest, Alexmadv Corachan.

When I got closer, I could hear that they had already started. LC fr0 was talking, and I came within earshot mid-sentence. “... and I know that you all have your own ships, and your own flying skills, but you are all in Rho now – that means we’re a unit, a team, and we’ve got to fly like one. First step: learn our signature maneuver. The Correllian Double Slip.”

FamePlane stepped forward. “It’s a bit difficult to explain in words, we’re just going to show ya. Kamaria, you’ll be the enemy craft, Maston her quarry, and fr0 and me the executors of the maneuver. Us four, let’s hop in these sim pods here and cast this on the display.” He nodded in my direction, a smirk on his face. “Major Admiral, welcome. If you would set us up?” I rolled my eyes at his double-rank joke, but nodded and went over to the controlling panel.

The four of them pulled their helmets on, Isabis’ boasting an outstanding red dot pattern around the eyes, and closed the pod hatches behind themselves. With the press of a few buttons and the flick of a switch on Morgan’s end, the four of them were suddenly in space, their craft displayed on a large screen for the spectators. Fame’s static-ridden voice came over the speakers.

“Kamaria, pursue Maston. Really try. Kamaria, you’re muted off this frequency so you don’t know what we’re planning.” A faint click indicated her dropping off the inter-pod call. Fame continued: “Maston, survive and line up with fr0 and me on my mark.” Acknowledgements and “roger”s chorused, and the speakers went silent. Kamaria wasted no time and immediately attacked Maston. He wove and dodged, spinning randomly, corkscrewing and drifting to avoid her increasingly threatening shots. With each passing second, her lasers inched closer to Maston’s TIE Avenger, the green bursts brighter and brighter in his cockpit.

And then Fame’s voice came back on. “Now, Maston. Bearing .150. Everyone, watch this.” Morgan switched the screen to a third person perspective off of Fame’s Avenger, and watched his and fr0’s tandem mastery, forming a line even and level, heading directly at Maston. On Fame’s order Maston dove, and an unprepared Kamaria was greeted by fr0, his ship having been visually hidden by Maston’s, his lasers already splashing against her now-failing shields. She dove too, and the beauty of the doubled line was revealed: because fr0 couldn’t adjust fast enough, he banked off of the line, revealing the final Avenger. FamePlane dove into a perpendicular line with Kamaria and with two quickly-fired proton torpedoes sent her TIE spiraling to an explosive end.

The hatches to the sim pods opened, and Kamaria came out first, chuckling. “So, why did it have to be me?” she asked of nobody in particular. The other three stepped out, pulling off their helmets. “The first lesson,” fr0 said, grabbing the attention of the new pilots, “is to always keep your radar in mind. The second, and more important, is that nothing beats a cohesive unit. No ace beats a team who is all on the same page. This is why it is so critical we log sim hours together: we improve together. Just look at Rho’s Chal Cup victory last year: no group of stars can beat a team like us.”

Morgan smiled from behind the row of the new recruits surrounding Fame and fr0. The scene of veterans passing on the knowledge and tradition to the fresh recruits was a beautiful one to him, one integral to the health of the squadron, and one that made him proud to be at the helm of such a beautiful place like Rho.)

Pilots of Rho Squadron,

Never would I have expected a post Imperial Storm month to be so stellar! I have simply nothing besides good news to report, successes in every aspect of the squadron. It is months like these that remind me the most how lucky I am to be in such an outstanding squadron, among such an outstanding group of people.

The most visible highlight of this month is the three new names that joined Rho Squadron. A warm and hearty welcome to LT Isabis Kamaria, LT OL”Davy Jonez, and LT Alexmadv Corachan, all three of whom earned their LT promotions without delay. With them they bring positive energy, commitment to the cause, and quite the flying activity. I’m beyond confident that each and every one will flourish and continue to prosperous careers, each helping to define the squadron in their own ways and contributions!

A quick interrupting shout-out to Maston, who recruited Davy and Corachan, and to fr0, who recruited Isabis! It’s great to see us building our own selves up, and individualized recruiting is a great way!

Most of these three new pilots contributed to a record number of monthly merit medal-winning pilots: congratulations to LC fr0Zen, CPT FamePlane, LT Maston Dane, LC Westric Davalorn, LT OL”Davy Jonez, LT Isabis Kamaria, and LT Rotarg Kradak! These seven pilots plus myself bring the record to eight pilots, two more than our previous! This is definitely cause for celebration: very well done, all!

These medalling pilots excelled in the cockpit this month. LC fr0Zen led the charge in Legions of Combat, earning one shy of forty this month. His competition this month was exquisitely tough for him, though: places 11 through 14 on the PVP killboard were all Rho Squadron pilots! Shoutout to, in order, LC fr0Zen, CPT FamePlane, LT Isabis Kamaria, and LT Maston Dane! A clump of pilots on the leaderboard is always an amazing thing to see, so thanks to all those with those efforts!

For Legions of Skirmish, LC Davalorn led by a healthy margin, and was also our only representative in the single player games… I swear I’ll make that statistic change, I’ve got to get on it!

In other types of activity for the squadron, both mine and fr0’s Ground Rhovers and Sky Rhovers competitions have ended! Congratulations to fr0Zen and Davalorn on their placement on the Ground Rhovers competition, and keep your ears peeled for the results for the Sky Rhovers!

Although those two competitions are over, Davalorn has two that are still going strong! One is a weekly trivia competition highlighting movies chronologically, which is now on Rogue One! Myself and Maston occupy second and third place, so let’s shoot for some Rho supremacy! His other, a screenshot competition, has ended the first month and votes on the best screenshot from SWS are now being held on the Discord! Make sure you weigh in there! The new month’s theme is the X-Wing game series, including X-Wing, TIE Fighter, XvT, and X-Wing Alliance (including XWAU and TFTC). If some of those acronyms don’t make sense to you, ask Dav! More details on both of these competitions below in the Competitions section!

A fantastic month by all metrics, pilots! Congratulations to everyone, and I look forward to continuing the great work into May!

For the Empire! Long may it reign.

A Banner for Battlegroup II (JetMech)

Battlegroup II needs an updated banner to include its newest additions! Feel free to include anything from the two included Battlegroups or anything from either Battlegroup's history!

We're looking for the banner to be 1000x500 in size. Please email all submissions to ehtcjetmech@gmail.com. A vote following the closeout of submissions will determine the placement.

Choose Your Own Adventure, Emperor's Hammer Style (Tim)

We've concluded our business with the Ishtari, but TIE Corps business goes on! Each week for four weeks you will write a fiction piece detailing life after the Ishtari. Posts must be in first person past tense, 1000 word minimum, no maximum. Scoring will be using the standard rubric. I will read every submission and select one to be an official "chapter" in the story, which will also function as the prompt for the following week.

TIE Corps Jigsaw Puzzle Part 2 (Vanman)

For 4 months, each month a new puzzle will be announced and pilots will compete for the best time with medals up for grabs for the top four fastest pilots as well as points accrued. At the end of each season, the top five pilots with the most points accrued will earn medals based on performance. In the event of a tie, the tie breaker will go to the pilot with the most 1st place wins.

Rules: Screenshots need to show the number of pieces from the bottom-left corner of the screen, the time shown in the middle, and the completed puzzle. Working through the puzzle multiple times and using all the options available in the app are allowed, except one: Don't change the number of pieces from 80. Pilots are encouraged to create a profile on https//www.jigsawplanet.com/ for extra fun and competition.

When you're satisfied with your time, take a screenshot and send it to vapinvanman@gmail.com. One entry per pilot, multiple submissions will not be accepted and only the first submission will be counted.

Have fun pilots!
