Section 4: TIE Design Overview: Heavy Assault

TIE BOMBER (TIE/sa or T/B)

Specifications:

  • Role: Bomber
  • Engines: Two (2)
  • Speed: 80 MGLT
  • Hull: Two (2) Heavy Modules
  • Weapons: Two (2) L-S1 Laser Cannons, One (1) Ordinance Bay

The TIE Bomber is the heavy counterpart of the TIE Fighter. It is easily identified by its shortened and canted solar arrays and twin hull design. Compared to most TIE designs, the TIE Bomber is slow with very poor maneuverability, but was the first variation that could threaten enemy capital ships. A modular ordinance bay allows the T/B to carry concussion missiles, proton torpedoes, heavy rockets, space mines, proton bombs, or thermal detonators. The TIE Bomber suffers from the usual TIE problems of no shielding system, no hyperdrive and limited peripheral view.

SCIMITAR ASSAULT BOMBER (TIE SCIMITAR)

Specifications:

  • Role: Assault Bomber
  • Engines: One (1)
  • Speed: 90 MGLT
  • Hull: One (1) Extended Heavy Module
  • Weapons: Two (2) L-S Laser Cannons, One (1) Ordinance Bay

Not truly a TIE craft, the Scimitar Assault Bomber is propelled by a single huge ion engine and a pair of linked repulsorlifts. The elongated single hull module contains the cockpit, housing the pilot and bombardier, and the heavy weapons bay. Despite the Scimitar not carrying any large projectiles, such as proton torpedoes or heavy rockets, it can carry a very large payload of concussion missiles, gravity grenades, or thermal detonators, depending on the mission requirements. The solar arrays of the Scimitar were shortened and lengthened and had a roughly shield-like shape. The Scimitar did not have a hyperdrive, but did equip a shield generator, improving the craft’s survivability greatly.

TIE PUNISHER (TIE/ca)

Specifications:

  • Role: Heavy Bomber
  • Engines: Two (2)
  • Speed: 90 MGLT
  • Hull: Two (2) Heavy Modules
  • Weapons: Two (2) L-S1 Laser Cannons

One of the most visually intimidating TIE variants, the Punisher has the solar arrays of a TIE Bomber and a centrally mounted cockpit flanked on either side by dual ordinance bays stacked atop one another. Those ordinance bays were capable of carrying a variety of missiles or gravity bombs, and the ship retained its twin laser cannons as well. It did not equip a hyperdrive but did come standard with an extremely strong shield generator which it needed to help improve survivability due to terrible maneuverability. Tempest Squadron of Wing X flies modified versions of this craft (Tempest-class TIE Punishers) that do also equip a hyperdrive and accompanying navicomputer, in exchange for some of its available missile payload.
