Section 5: Star Destroyers

Supernova - Star Destroyers

When the power to destroy whole worlds was not enough, methods of destroying entire star systems were conceived. Since most systems contain only one or two habitable planets at most, it is far more efficient and devastating to simply destroy the entire system at once by causing the star to supernova. These are perhaps the most powerful and feared of all superweapons.

Centerpoint Station Centerpoint Station is the oldest and most powerful superweapon presented in this course, capable of moving planets through hyperspace and collapsing stars via hyperspace tractor beams. Originally constructed by the Celestials around one billion BBY, Centerpoint occupies the Lagrange point between Talus and Tralus, drawing power from the gravity wells of both planets. The gravimetric energy is focused into a star-like internal device called the Glowpoint, which powers the entire station.

At 100 km wide and 350 km long, Centerpoint is larger than the first Death Star. Evidence suggests the massive station was used to move all the planets of the Corellian system to their present locations.

Centerpoint Station remained mysteriously passive for many years, even acquiring a permanent settlement called Hollowtown. All this changed in 18 ABY, when the criminal Saccorian Triad seized control of the station, causing violent energy flares that vaporized Hollowtown and most of its inhabitants. The flares were the byproduct of the Saccorians' incomplete knowledge of Centerpoint's ignition sequence, but the Triad's Starbuster Plot did use the station's power to detonate star TD-10036-EM-1271, a fortunately uninhabited system.

The Starbuster Plot concluded when Anakin Solo used his innate Force affinity for machinery to determine Centerpoint Station's control scheme. Solo disabled the station's firing capability, averting further crisis.

Suncrusher Schematic Despite its 13 meter length, the Sun Crusher lived up to its name. This starfighter-sized superweapon was the last such device produced at Tarkin's Maw Installation. Chief scientist Qui Xux headed the project, resulting in this formidable weapon.

The Sun Crusher's primary weapon was the resonance torpedo launcher. Each of its eleven torpedoes could penetrate the heart of a star, releasing hyper-dense energetic matter, causing the stellar core's collapse. The subsequent supernova then destroyed not only the star, but the entire solar system. While not an instant effect, once the torpedo detonated the chain reaction was irreversible.

The tiny craft was armed with 5 defensive laser turrets, but these were mostly an afterthought. The Sun Crusher's primary defense was the Quantum-crystalline armor, capable of withstanding the energy of a supernova. The armor was slightly out of phase and incredibly dense, allowing it to withstand incredible punishment, including a glancing shot from the Prototype Death Star's superlaser! Han Solo even rammed Admiral Daala's star destroyer, Hydra, driving the craft completely through Hydra's command tower without damaging the Sun Crusher. The stricken star destroyer then drifted helplessly into one of the Maw's numerous black holes, where it was obliterated.

Sun Crusher Luke Skywalker sent the Sun Crusher into the heart of the gas giant Yavin, thinking the craft was unreachable. One of his students, a young Jedi named Kyp Durron retrieved the craft using the Force under the guidance of the ancient Sith spirit, Exar Kun. Fueled by his hatred of the Empire, Durron embarked upon a lethal campaign, destroying the entire Carida system, including the venerable Carida Academy. Durron's wrath then led him to the Cauldron Nebula,in which the bulk of Admiral Daala's fleet was hidden. Detonating all seven blue supergiants within the nebula destroyed the remnants of the Maw Fleet and the Eol Sha mining colony. Only the star destroyer Gorgon escaped, abeit with severe damage.

Nothing less than the irresistible power of a black hole could overcome the Sun Crusher's Quantum-crystalline armor. To "redeem" himself to his Jedi cohorts, Kyp Durron plunged the Sun Crusher into one of the singularities surrounding the Maw Installation, destroying one of the most powerful craft ever devised.
