TIE Corps Commander's Award Announced

FA Kessler

29 February, 2000 14:42
8 ABY
Not long ago, the ISD Colossus and Wing VIII had the lowest morale and membership figures in the TIE Corps. Two short months later, after some major effort by everyone involved, they submitted 150 Battle Submission Forms in one month alone! That's an average of 4 BSFs per pilot, per month. No-one else even comes close to matching this level of flying activity.

Now I accept that this level of flying is going to be hard to maintain, and I wouldn't be remotely surprised if they started to slip next month, but that's not the point. Two months ago, they were in real danger of being closed and having their pilots split up around the rest of the Fleet. Today they're the most active Wing and Ship I can remember seeing in a long time. That's no mean achievement, and it's something that isn't going to go unrewarded.

In honour of the crew of the ISD Colossus, I hereby institute a new Award, and an Award that I intend to give every month to the Wing or ship that I consider to have proven themselves to be the best in the TIE Corps in the previous month...

The ISD Colossus is hereby declared the winner of the TIE Corps Commander's Citation for February 2000. My warmest congratulations to all onboard her!

Twenty seven days from now, the TIE Corps will mass for a military training exercise, codenamed Imperial Storm.

The objective of Imperial Storm is to pit the forces of the TIE Fighter Corps against each other under the command of their Flag Officers. Commanding Officers will be expected to deploy and manoeuvre the forces assigned to them by the Fleet Order of Battle in a method that will lead to victory over all opposition.

Secondary Objective is for the Flight Office to introduce the Project Faithful Wargaming rules to as wide an audience as possible within the TIE Fighter Corps. Following the conclusion of Imperial Storm, the Flight Office will throw open the Rules system, complete with advanced rules for reinforcements and more complicated Maps to the entire Fleet for use as a means of competition between Ships and Wings.

The ImpStorm Operations Website is now online, featuring a complete Order of battle for all participating Units, and the Rules system that will govern this wargame. Maps and Travel Rules are still under discussion, but TIE Corps News will feature regular updates on progress as it happens.
Hostilities will commence on March 25th.

Well, it's mid-term time for me. I have the plans for the finished Combat Center laid out on paper along with most of the code of the INPR archive complete. Unfortunately, I'm being pressed for time at the moment because of upcoming mid-term exams, a CS Project due tonight, and my RL job wants me to put in more hours.

The "Battle of the Day" feature will also be on hold for a few days. I cut up my right hand last night in a kitchen accident. It's nothing serious, but until it heals enough for me to take off most of the bandages, I can't hold a joystick (or type very well) and can't fly battles for posting until at least this weekend.

Thanks for your patience. After next week, mid-terms will be over and I'll have more time to devote to my work here.

Star Wars Quake cutbacks

HA Kawolski

21 February, 2000 11:57
8 ABY
The project team of Star Wars Quake has made the difficult decision to make cuts to the plotline of their long-awaited Star Wars Quake game mainly due to lack of time, resulting in a shorter plot (and fewer levels?) to the single-player aspect of the game.

As quoted from Project Leader and Designer "Red Knight":

We've been at this for more than thirty months already, and it would be at least another six to eight (or longer) before closure was brought to the single-play storyline. By then, there is very little question that Quake 2 will not be getting a lot of attention, and because of this, it would be very hard for some of us to justify devoting a lot of time to finishing SWQ off.

On the bright side, the public multiplayer test release is getting closer!

If there's an XvT or BoP mission/battle on the EH Battle Center without the .LST files included, please notify High Admiral Kawolski

For mission editors: You MUST have your custom .LST file for your missions replace the original missions, starting with 0. Do NOT start at some ridiculous mission number like 100 or 999 or 5000. Tactical Update

HA Kawolski

18 February, 2000 23:02
8 ABY
We're currently up to 1,156 Custom Free Missions online!

I'm currently finishing up the Combat Center on the TIE Corps database for the Combat Operations Office. Once that's complete, the INPR archive will come online (sometime this weekend is a pretty good bet). Next, I'll proceed to start the laser-less scoring plan for the EH Battle Center.

After polling the fleet, I found most people were in favor of replacing the High Battle Total scores using the Laser-Less scoring system and keeping the High Mission scores using the same traditional system. At the end of the month, Battle Submission Forms will now require you to enter in the number of laser-hits recorded by the pilot file. The database will auto-calculate the laser-less score. The laser-less scores will replace the older High Battle Total scores. The current High Battle Total scores will be saved and displayed for all time in EH Newsletter #63.

The Fleet Commander's Honor Guard point system will also be adjusted as a result of the new laser-less system. Currently, for each High Battle Total score you hold, you get 5 points. Under the new system, for each High Battle Total score you hold, you will get 2 points multiplied by the number of missions in the battle.

So with a four-mission battle, if you hold the High Total, you would receive 8 FCHG points. With a 20-mission CAB, if you hold the High Total, you would receive 40 FCHG points!

Again, the High Mission Scores will not use laser-less system. This setup is a reasonable compromise between the pro-laser and anti-laser crowds that are massing in the TIE Corps.

In the meantime, I'd like to present a few hints on how to score high:

* If the mission contains a Super-Ace ship that doesn't leave, fly into its blind spot (if it has one) and fire away. Tie a rubber band around your joystick trigger button and leave it shooting at the super-ace ship overnight. Your score is only limited to how long you want to spend shooting at it. I believe the maximum score is limited to a little bit over 2.1 billion points.

* If you have the ion cannon, disable starfighters down to 33%. They won't be able to move, but their shields still regenerate. Disable a bunch of starfighters this way and you can spend time shooting the regenerating shields off the field of disabled starfighters.

* If you don't have the ion cannon, but you have wingmen, you can order them to wait and shoot off their shields this way.

* Use the weak low-powered lasers. Shoot your friendly ships like ISDs (but don't destroy them) to 0% Shields and 1% Hull to get more points.

...and how to score high using the laser-less system:

* If you have a mission that uses ion cannons only and speed isn't a factor (meaning you don't have to kill a number of craft in a short about of time), use only your ion cannons and disable everything in sight since ion cannon shots don't count against your accuracy or laser-hits. Then use high powered lasers to destroy whatever's hanging around. Be careful and you'll get 100% accuracy and have a good chance of scoring the maximum possible points you can earn for that mission.

Running XvT or BoP in Windows 2000 Professional

8 ABY
As posted on Alliance HQ:

For those of us who have Windows 2000 Professional up and running you probably have already noticed that XVT (and BOP) do not work under Windows 2000! The game fails to detect your primary display drivers DirectX version and then prompts you to install version 5 (which you just shouldnt do).

LucasArts has yet to release a patch or hotfix to solve this little programming problem of theirs, but a good friend of mine who goes by the name of Psychosis has a easy work around that he says works...
1) Go into your XVT folder that is on your local HDD
2) Find the Z_xvt___.exe and make a shortcut to it on your desktop (or whereever you want to put it).
3) In the BOP folder do the same thing with the file that is stored there.
4) Now all that you have to do is run one of these EXEs to play XVT or BOP. The DirectX detection problem apparently lies in the "launcher menu" that so many of us use to get into the game.

Cheating policy explained/updated

HA Kawolski

13 February, 2000 13:58
8 ABY
This will be posted up in the EH Battle Center for everyone to see and read in the future, but to make things perfectly clear to everyone, the following techniques and methods are classified as cheating in Single-Player battles, punishable by an instant ban from the EH Battle Center and court-martial which may result in demotion or expulsion from the fleet. There is a ZERO TOLERANCE policy when it comes to cheating in the Emperor's Hammer!

The following practices are banned from use in the Emperor's Hammer and classified as cheating:

Editing your pilot file - While TFW, the BSF Generator Program (aka TIE Pilot Workshop), and Midnight Editor are good for checking pilot file scores without using the game to review them, they have been abused in the past to dishonestly edit and alter scores as well.

Killing Imperial craft on your own side - In TIE Fighter, while killing a friendly Imperial craft on your side results in an instant 5000 point deduction by the game, the deduction is only applied once a mission, and destroying large numbers of friendly craft results in an inflated score and extra kills on your pilot file. This does not apply to shooting at friendly Imperial craft, only to destroying them.

Editing the mission file - The missions aren't perfect. If there's a bug to be corrected, it is asked that you use the Bug Report form. Contact the Tactical Office only if it's a game-stopping bug. You may NOT under ANY circumstances edit the official missions for ANY reason without approval from the Tactical Office!

Using ship patches on missions they were not intended to be used on - The Science Office, as well as the Corporate Division and several Non-EH affiliated editing sites such as Datamaster's, have several ships and patches available to add-on to existing games. Some of these patches can alter the player's craft (such as giving the player more warheads, shields the strength of that an ISD has, or more powerful tubrolasers for laser cannons) giving the player an unfair advantage. These patches are not allowed to be used when playing official battles unless specifically stated which patches are authorized for use. However, playing a mission without modifying your game (if it's still playable), is not considered cheating.

Using external game trainers - Using in-game trainers such as "Unlimited Weapons" or "Invulnerability Mode" is permitted since the game deducts 90% of your score if these are used. Using external-game trainers that give you unlimited weapons or invulnerability or other advantages to bypass the 90% penalty is strictly prohibited!

Using the wrong game platform - Converting an official TIE Mission to XvT or XWA or converting an XvT Mission to XWA using TIE2XvT, AlliED, or any other editor, then submitting the XvT or XWA pilot file for scores and credit for the original official version is strictly prohibited! In this particular case, both the pilot and the person who submitted the Battle Submission Form will be punished.

The FAQs, as a lot of you were aware, were seriously in need of an update. That update is now complete, and you can access the FAQs at either the link on the navbar, the Flight Office, or here.

The new FAQs are of most use to new pilots, but there's a lot of answers to some very popular questions that I still get from the older and bolder pilots too. Please cehck them out next time you need to ask the Flight Office a question, it may save us all some time.

Also available at The Force.net is a stunning fan-designed mini-movie called 'The Dark Redemption'. It runs to 26 minutes and is quite simply a breathtaking example of what you can do with a small budget and some astonishing special effects. The Dark Redemption stars Mara Jade (down, boys!) and Boba Fett, and can be downloaded in either five segments totalling 77MB or a smaller but lower quality 26MB single download. Quicktime is required to view the movie.

Congratulations to Colonel Havoc , for being selected as the new Fleet Combat Operations Officer! he was chosen from a list of some very impressive applicants, but as they say in 'Highlander', "There can be only One."

The COO will be responsible for scouting out opportunities for online combat with other Star Wars Clubs, as well as ensuring that the TIE Corps' Zone profile recieves a much needed boost. His Staff are currently organising a contest between the ASF and a new Zone Club named the Crimson Mercenaries. The Contest is due to begin sometime in March. Start warming up your engines!

I have an email folder on my Computer called 'Flight Office Discipline'. It's mostly empty, because most of the time, there's nothing worth storing in there. All that changed this week. Right now it contains 51 messages concerning various cases of cheating, falsifying pilot files and numerous Articles of War violations. That's 51 more messages than I'd prefer to see.

Anyone even considering using a pilot or mission editor to change the results of any missions flown had better have a good long think about the consequences of getting caught. As a bare minimum, you'll be suspended from the TIE Corps. Every High Score you hold will be wiped from the Battle Board. If you hold any position higher than Flight Member, you'll lose it, no questions asked. And this is before the Inquisitors get their hands on you. Once your Court martial is over, you'll probably be looking at being busted down half a dozen ranks, and you can forget any chance of getting a position higher than Flight Member for a good long time too. Oh yes, and your shame will be made public if you're found guilty at your Court Martial. We don't cover up our cheats in the TIE Corps, we expose them for what they are.

Weigh up all of that against the benefit of getting 2 miserable extra FCHG points for a mission High Score and ask yourself - 'Is it really worth it?'

If your answer is anything other than 'no', we will catch you. Sooner or later, one of your pilot files will be audited by the Tactical Office, and if there's the slightest indication of any wrongdoing, we'll ask to see the rest of your pilot files. And you'd better pray there's nothing wrong with them either. You might be able to escape justice by erasing your files, but failure to supply a pilot file for a TAC Audit is immediate grounds to have your scores for the mission in question wiped. No arguments. And you never know, your CMDR may have kept the files, can you be sure he or she doesn't already have the evidence that will condemn you?

Cheaters are being caught. They are currently suspended from the TIE Corps, and they are all facing Court Martial for their crimes. The TAC Staff can calculate the score you should have had down to the last point, and when it doesn't match with the score you submitted, questions start to get asked. Anyone who submits an altered pilot file from this moment forth stands an excellent chance of being caught in the random sweeps and publicly punished and humiliated.

Not many of you cheat, but with every TAC Office Audit, there'll be less and less of you to ruin the Scoreboard for honest pilots who rely on skill with a joystick rather than a pilot editor.

The message is simple - it's not worth it, so don't do it.

Laser-Less scoring proved accurate

HA Kawolski

09 February, 2000 22:35
8 ABY
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Admiral Striker, the laser-less scoring formula for total scores has been proven to be accurate.

Here are some of the formulas available to use:

Note: In all formulas, if the pilot's score is 0, it stays at 0.

No Lasers
Final Score = Total Score + Laser shots - (Laser hits * 3)
Points for lasers hits are ignored completely.

No Lasers (with encouragement for accuracy)
Final Score = Total Score - (Laser hits * 2)
Pilot loses points for missing shots, but gains no points for hitting shots.

No Lasers (with encouragement for accuracy and efficiency)
Final Score = Total Score - (Laser hits * 3)
Pilot loses points for using laser shots.
*This is the proposed system for use in the new EH Battle Center for High Score Totals.

No Missiles
Final Score = Total Score + (Missile shots * 50) - (Missile hits * 100)
Points for lasers hits are ignored completely.

No Missiles (with encouragement for accuracy)
Final Score = Total Score - (Missile hits * 50)
Pilot loses points for missing shots, but gains no points for hitting shots.

No Missiles (with encouragement for accuracy and efficiency)
Final Score = Total Score - (Missile hits * 100)
Pilot loses points for using missiles.

A No-Laser and No-Missile formula can be combined with each other.

For example: Let's say you wanted to hold a competition with No Lasers (with encouragement for accuracy) and No Missiles (with encouragement for accuracy and efficiency). The new formula would be:
Final Score = Total Score - (Laser hits * 2) - (Missile hits * 100)

If you have any questions about this system, please feel free to e-mail High Admiral Kawolski.

Fleet Admiral Thedek has stepped down from his position as Internet Officer so he can concentrate all his efforts on his primary position as Grand Master of the Dark Brotherhood.

As posted on www.emperorshammer.org by Grand Admiral Ronin:

The Internet Officer is directly responsible for maintaining the Main EH Club Links and assists with maintenance of the EH WWW Domain.   The Main EH WWW Links Site serves as a central link for ALL EH related links/pages in the Fleet (i.e. Subgroups, Battlegroups, Ships, Wings and Squadrons).   The Internet Officer also aids the Fleet by looking for new areas of exposure and opportunities for the Emperor's Hammer on the WWW.  The Internet Officer also selects the Emperor's Hammer Member Site of the Week.

The Fleet Commander (Grand Admiral Ronin) also requests potential Applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Be a LONG-standing Member and Officer in the club (>1 year).
  • Not have had ANY cases brought before the High Court of Inquisitors.
  • Has demonstrated increased command responsibility within the club, reaching at least a Rank of Rear Admiral.
  • Portrays a responsible and mature manner both online and in private correspondence.
  • Be a proven EXPERT in HTML, WWW sites, message boards, etc.
  • Be able to host a STABLE series of WWW sites for use by the Emperor's Hammer Membership (i.e. Main Links Page, WWW Message Boards, etc.).

Interested Applicants should email their "resumes" to the Fleet Commander (Grand Admiral Ronin) and Executive Officer (Sector Admiral Compton).

Squadron.org getting a hardware update

I have finally obtained my upgrades for the squadron.org server. Unfortunately to put them in the server, I will have to take it offline at about 12 midnight EST (GMT -5hrs), for no less than 30 minutes, and hopefully no more than an hour. The upgrades consist of the following hardware:

Dual Intel Celeron 500MHz CPU's (100MHz Bus)
Abit BP6 Dual Celeron Mainboard

Obviously this will be a great improvement in speed, which will probably be most noticeable by those of you who have CGI scripts on squadron.org.

In the future I may put OpenBSD on my computer to replace Linux. OpenBSD is much more secure, and is considered to be more stable as well. For more information on OpenBSD please visit http://www.openbsd.org. I will keep you posted on this.

I also now have the ability to host mailing lists on squadron.org to ease communication between groups of people.

For further information please email me at: absolute@squadron.org

Any Sith pilot who has completed the Shadow Academy and is of the minimum rank of Guardian, may apply to join the TIE Corps with the rank of Lieutenant onboard the Flagship of the Dark Brotherhood, the SSD Avenger.

Any Sith pilot who is ranked at least Dark Jedi Knight, may apply to join the TIE Corps with the rank of Lieutenant Commander onboard the Flagship of the Dark Brotherhood, the SSD Avenger

This application process completely bypasses the PLT Daedalus training requirement for qualified Sith Pilots, since they have already completed the Shadow Academy Sith Pilot's Course.

Bearing the above conditions in mind, interested pilots are invited to send applications to their Quaestors. Applications must contain your current Dark Brotherhood ID line, your chosen TIE Corps name, and your email address. All applications should be sent by the House Quaestors direct to Fleet Admiral Kessler , who will make progress reports to the Grand Master as they are processed.

Headlines system clarified

Just to answer any questions, the headlines system highlights the more important and vital news over the "extra" news provided here. Examples of important news would include fleet announcements from COs and database updates/status reports. Examples of extra news would be software update info (like AlliED or mIRC), new Pulp Phantom episodes, and non-EH related Star Wars points of interest (like the Lightsaber).

Troy Dangerfield released AlliED v1.30 today for registered users. Big changes! There's more support for multi-selecting and multi-dragging of flight groups and waypoints! Now you can also tell ships in their orders to attack certain components in their orders, such as telling a squadron of Gunboats to take out the shield generators of an enemy ISD or a squadron of TIE Advanced to shoot out the lasers of an escort carrier! More details can be found at the AlliED homepage at http://homepages.picknowl.com.au/troyd/.

TC Survey Center online

The TIE Corps Survey Center is now online and operational. TIE Corps personnel and members of the EH CS-12 and their Command Attachés will be able to access it through the administration menu.

This Survey Center is NOT to be confused with the EH Poll Center run by Fleet Admiral Manesh! They are two separate things! The Survey Center results are not shown to general membership (though the results of some questions may be announced on the News Page) and the new system restricts usage to prevent visitors to this homepage who are not in the TIE Corps from filling out surveys and keeps personnel from filling out the same survey more than once.

The TC Survey Center is also not open to Cadets. Cadets will have to complete their training first in order to gain access.

The purpose of the TC Survey Center is to gather feedback on certain issues and help make improvements to the TIE Corps fleet and/or to the TC Database. Any questions, comments, suggestions, or bug-reports about/for the TC Survey Center go to High Admiral Kawolski.

Laser-less scoring method

HA Kawolski

A new scoring method has been proposed for optional use in competitions using the TIE Fighter game platform. It simply involves eliminating the extra points pilots earn with laser shots by adjusting the total score using this simple formula:

Total Score - (Laser hits * 3) = New Score

With this formula, pilots still lose points if they miss with their lasers thus making laser accuracy more important! This scoring system is here only for suggestive use in competitions. The EH Battle Center/Battle Submission Form System will continue to use the regular scoring system where laser hits are counted in the score.

Ban on excessive ion cannon shots lifted

After doing some testing today, I learned that under all three TIE Fighter game platforms, Ion Cannon shots are not recorded in the pilot file in any way.

Ion Cannon shots do not affect your laser accuracy rating. They do not give you extra points when you hit ships. They do not cause you to lose points when you miss.

If you have proof that says otherwise, please e-mail me at absurefire@aol.com.

TIE Corps Magazine Released!

AD Val Ricaud

The first issue of Battlecry, the new TIE Corps magazine, is now available in both on-line and off-line formats at http://www.xtc56.dial.pipex.com/battlecry.htm.

The off-line version, weighing in at just 333KB, does not include full graphics nor the voices for the XvT Mag Contest mission. I've done my best to balance style, content, and size, to encourage more people to download and read the mag (no awful 10MB DLs :-)).

Anyway, my thanks to the Flight Office for invaluable support and hosting the mag, and Vice Admiral Sauron, for handling the missions and the contest. *Round of applause* :-)
