Omega Report # 0 (2003-08-18)

Strap yourselves in, it's time once again for the Omega Squadron report!

Squadron News
------------------------

- The Big News this week is that two long running competitions are drawing to a close. Both the Sovereign Squadron League and the General's Sovereign Summer Patrol will be ending this week. This is going to leave us a with a disturbing absence of flight competitions, but worry not. I know that AD Proton has a few things on the burner to keep us all busy, and I might just get creative myself and run a (*gasp!*) intra-squadron competition! And besides, we will soon be involved in ...

- Imperial Storm IV : The Outrageous Wrath of the Mighty Sov (or "Sink the Sov", if you want to use the official name). After many, many disputes among the higher echelons regarding the rules and overall layout of the competition, IS IV is officially a "go". There is a tentative start date of Tuesday, September 2nd -- but that may be subject to change. Much like the recent "Operation : Outrageous Fortune", IS IV will be primarily a multi-player conflict using XWA; however, the performance of the single player squadrons on assigned free missions will have a big influence on how the game plays out. I expect you'll be hearing much more about IS IV as we near the start date, so keep your TIEs warmed up, and anyone with XWA and "mad multiplayer skillz" should stay on alert!

- The Sovereign Caption Contest has come to an end ... I'm proud to say that it was pretty much dominated by Omega Squadron! If the fleet didn't know before that we have a twisted sense of humor, then they should know now. Congratulations to LC Brandon, who was the overall winner of the competition! More congrats are in order for GN Compton and COL Ixion Deathbringer, who were two of the three pilots that tied for second place. Great work by Ixion and Brandon for taking "best quote" in categories 2 and 4, respectively. The results, along with all the submitted captions, can be found here : http://www.minos.net/~proton/caption.html

- We've had some new high scores chalked up this week! In weeks past, I have slacked off a little on bragging about new high scores that you guys have set, but I'm going to try to keep up with it. Great work this week by Brandon, who took the top spot on FREE-TIEs # 40 and 169, as well as taking two new mission high scores on TC-TIE # 137.

- Also, excellent flying by MAJ Artyis, who has claimed the high score on IW-XvT # 10!

- And last but not least, great work by LC Todbringer, who scored two new mission high scores on TC-TIE # 204!

Squadron Orders
--------------------------

- Your primary orders are to fly TC-TIE # 194, "Terrorist Attack", for the Final Round of the Sovereign Squadron League. We've had an absolutely outstanding season so far ... everyone just keep it up for one more round, and let's take home that trophy! Your deadline is August 22nd, this Friday; which means that your last full day to fly will be August 21st, this coming Thursday. You can find the battle attached to this report.

- After flying the TIE Division, it's time to get back in your fighter and help us try to win a dual championship! Your secondary orders are to fly FCHG-XWA # 3, "Ronin's Deception", for the XWA Division of the SSL. Your deadline is the same, which means your last full day to fly is August 21st. Remember, we're working against a 5% score bonus in Vampire Squadron's favor, and we just barely outscored them in the last round. We're going to need six solid submissions to put up a fight against them. You will find the battle attached to this report.

- By the way, LC Brandon has put out some excellent tips for both of these assignments. If you didn't receive them or deleted them, let me know and I will forward the tips over to you.

- This week also marks the final patrol of the GSSP! I'm very proud to announce that Ixion, Ras, Artyis and myself have not been dropped off. Just one more week, guys! You can find the final assignments here : http://theholo.net/mb/viewtopic.php?t=8271

Misc.
---------

- SWG News of the Week : Sony Online Entertainment released it's first LARGE patch for SWG this week, to very mixed reviews. Many people love some of the changes that were made, and I have to admit that many good things have been done. However, in many people's opinion, including my own, just as many new problems were created. Without going into all the gory details, it has been a rough week for SWG players. One of the many bugs of the update caused the EH's Player Association to become terminally bugged (literally, since our guild control terminal stopped working). Darknyte, the leader of our PA, was told by the SWG Developers that it was a problem that could not be fixed for months (if ever), and we were forced to scrap our guild and start a new one from scratch. To add insult to injury, DN himself was forced to abandon his character completely and create a new one, due to a bug which caused him to be unfairly weak. And let's not forget the many "nerf-ings" ... Probots have been "nerfed" so badly that it no longer makes any sense to own one, since they now die instead of becoming incapacitated. Hence, they are now a useless waste of credits. And lastly, the Dev's decided that Bounty Hunters were too powerful, and made many "nerfs" to their special moves. Most Bounty Hunters are very pissed about that. Meanwhile, all Commandos (and Commandos-In-Training, like yours truly) wait for the devs to fix the many bugs with that profession. Basically, the only benefit that a Commando has is the ability to use heavy weapons, and all the heavy weapons are still unfairly rare and can only be used at extremely close range. You would think that a rocket launcher or flame thrower would be used from a distance, right? No, the devs expect you to be RIGHT IN FRONT of your target, or the weapons will not work. Crazy.

Okay, I'm going to stop before I ramble on and on about SWG all evening. That's going to wrap it up for this week, so fly high and watch your six!
