Beta Squadron Report #7

Saturday, March 26th, 2005

"The meeting chamber fell to an abrupt darkness as the last drunken stragglers of the unit made their belated way into the crowded enclosure. Some of the pilots adjusted in their seats, weary from the routine of an officer. Others cast fleeting glances upon their surroundings, prepared for the vagaries of another rambling announcement. All maintained a facade of restraint and discipline. The quiet hum of the holoprojector whirled to life, casting an azure glow over the speaking Squadron Commander. 'Greetings pilots," he spoke, his voice registering a familiar squadron pride, "Look lively, and stoic. Now, onto the briefing...'"

Squadron News

I hope this report finds you well. We're in our seventh week, and overall, it was one of decent activity. Amusingly, for a week that brings relatively little in the way of flight, there's actually been a bit happening with the squadron this week. Of course the most important happening was that Sub-Lieutenant Exar joined us after completing his time in Platform Daedalus. I welcome him, as I know the rest of you do, and I would like to personally thank pilots Arcanos and Q'jira for their help and dedication to seeing Exar through his Pilot Certification and other duties. You serve your squadron above and beyond the call of duty.

In other, less important terms, Beta Echelon won the very first Site of the Week Award for the tenure of Internet Officer Lenvik. It's quite an honor to say the least, and I will do my best to prove our site worthy of it in the future as well as the present. Of lesser note, Beta Echelon is also registered with the new EH Site Database (link: http://ehlinks.lenvik.org/). Finally, we continued to do well in the Sovereign SP Ladder, and the results of Week Two were quite favorable to us, especially so in the case of exceptional pilot J'Lek Arcanos.

Also of particular note this week is the work of LT Hunter, who is very rapidly returning to fine flying form after resolving his technical problems. He's flown the most of anyone besides myself in the squadron this week, and I commend him for this. In terms of myself, I have fixed my joystick calibration problems by buying a new one. :P I have tried to make up this week for my low activity in last week, but whether it is enough is of course for you to decide. I will continue in the meantime to do my best to lead you all from the front, especially in these times of relative crisis.

In perhaps more technical matters this week, the OPS position is still untaken, so we will have to wait a brief while longer while a new one is chosen to get our shiny medals. Another setback to our plans is our squadron patch having not been approved yet, but things will come soon. In terms of our squadron, I am working on several continuing projects and adding new ones, which can be seen below. I am still working on revamping the site with new features, which is being hampered somewhat by my recent real life obligations. Regardless, it is coming along. Particularly close to realization is the squadron runon I have been planning, which I hope you will all take part in. Another competition is coming up as well, which I can't reveal for the moment. :P In the meantime, let's keep it up, Yaks.

    From MAJ Brin Chaser's Announcement:

Following the success of the Torus Trooper Competition (ID 1776) the Wing Commander has augmented the simulators with a new piece of software. The pilots think it's a bowling simulator. To the Wing Commander, it's the perfect way to access pilot accuracy and control. Pilots need to send a screenshot of their results to the Wing Commander to be considered for the reward, as this is a pilot evaluation exercise.

Weekly Activity

As with the preceding weeks, I'd like to suggest that we fly missions directed towards the Sovereign SP Ladder. And, as usual, they're not out yet, but I'll get them out to you over the Message Board and the website as soon as they are.

Otherwise, have a good week. That's not a recommendation. That's an order. :)

The Yak's Mouth

Unfortunately, I was unable to note any amusing nonprivate conversation this week. If you have some you'd like to contribute for the future, feel free to email me at jansj@comcast.net and I'll make sure to corrupt the others with its presence. ;)

Pun of the Week

It's a badly known fact that Quasimodo (you know - the Hunchback of Notredame) has an identical twin bother. The twin had left the city many years ago, to live in the countryside, where he made a good living as a bell-ringer for a small rural church.

One day, Quasimiodo decides that he wants to go on a holiday - he hasn't left the city in years - so he gives his brother a ring and asks if he'd like to come over to look after the bells at Notredame for a week. The brother decides that this is a great idea. Nice change of scenery, and all that, so he packs a couple of bags, and heads off to Paris. When he arrives, the first thing to get to him is the size of everything. He's used to the little church bells, and the size of Notredame cathedral and it's bells are a little awe-inspiring.

Quasimodo leads him up to the belfry. "The bell-cords rotted through years ago," he says, " so I have to ring the bells from up here."

"How do you do that?" asks his brother (not really sure he wants to know the answer).

"Well," says Quasi, "I run at the bells, and hit them with my head like this...". So he bashes the nearest bell with his forehead, and it makes a beatiful (and loud) ring. After a few demonstrations, the brother decides to have a go. He runs up towards a bell, smacks his head against it, and it makes a lovely ring, but unfortunately, it also gives him concussion, and he staggers around the belfry for a moment before falling out, down, down, down to the pavement below.

Quasimodo is understandably upset, and as he peers over the edge, he can see a crowd of people gathering around the scene.

"Who is it?" says one.

"I'm not sure, but the face rings a bell," says another.

"Yes - he's a dead ringer for Quasimodo," says a third.

"No. I think it's his brother," says the second person, "I had a hunch he was back."

The Last Word

This week wasn't exactly a firestorm of activity, but the important thing is that we are slowly growing consistent, and a new pilot has joined our ranks, hopefully to distinguish himself and rise to the rank of Lieutenant in the near future. Wing I is in a strange way at the moment, but as long as we do our best alongside Epsilon and Alpha, we will recover. I'd like to remind you all that I am always here if you should need anything, and I look with pride upon your accomplishments not only as a CMDR, but as a friend. I look to the coming days not with the dread that might have accompanied the old days of Wing I, but with a sense of barely bridled anticipation and excitement.

For this week, however, it's your commander signing out.

"Down to zero with a word..."

In sincerity,
