"The quiet hum of the holoprojector whirled to life, casting an azure glow over the speaking Squadron Commander. 'Greetings pilots. Look lively. Now, onto the briefing...'"

Squadron News

As always, I hope everyone's had a good week. This week was a true step up from last week's in terms of activity and dedication. I've seen activity not only from myself, but from Conker, J'Lek, Hunter, and Tirna. Not only that, but three of us have actually flown this week! That's excellent. Truly excellent. We're coming back into form, my fellow Betans. Also of note is LT Tirna Q'jira, who's auspicious debut bespeaks a great potential. Additionally, I was also able to release a Commander's Communique this week, which I hope you enjoyed and found informative. We recently had a change of mottos and nicknames in our squadron, and you can see the new additions below in the Roster section. On a final note, two people in Beta have also been active in the "Wing I Communication Initiative" competition: myself and Hunter. Both it and the "Wing I Torus Simulator" competition are winding down, so try to get in any last minute entries soon.

There have been two roster changes this week, one good, one bad. On the bright side, we gained a new member of our squadron in Sub-Lieutenant Tirna Q'jira, who I have no doubt will do well in her tenure. On the other hand, we lost Commander Max, who finally transferred out to Thunder Squadron on the ISD Challenge. We will miss his skills and humor in these coming days, and we wish him the best on his new ship.

Beta Echelon has been updated a few times this week, with the new communique as well as my new Procedures and Protocols, which you can find in the "Orders & Regulations" page. There's alot to see on Beta Echelon now, so check it out soon if you have the time. There'll be plenty more there in the days to come, especially with the renovation of the "History / Canon" section.

On a different note, I realized that so far I hadn't really articulated my precise projects to you. I've completed two of them this week, but I still feel that I should be a little more concrete and let you know what I'm up to. Therefore, before is a list of the projects I'm trying to work on for Beta Squadron at this time:

Create new procedures and protocols: 100% complete.
Revise squadron and flight mottos and nicknames: 100% complete.
Create new "History / Canon" section for Beta Echelon: 30% complete.
Creation of "Stoic Yak" section for Beta Echelon: 40% complete.
Create new "Battle Center" section for Beta Echelon: 5% complete.
Recruit new pilots in Beta Echelon: 4% complete.

Finally, in the more flavorful section of our reports, I decided that it's only fitting that we should have a "Stoic Yak" award for our squadron, with the release of the new squadron mottos. Essentially, it's an award to recognize the efforts of a member of the squadron (excepting the CMDR) who has displayed true dedication and ardor. It will be given here and there, and represented on Beta Echelon as well. As soon as I have the graphics, writing, and other implements in place, I will begin awarding them.

Promos:
SL Tirna Q'jira promoted to Lieutenant. Excellent work: you earned it.

Transfers:
=> Out: CM Max transferred out to Thunder Squadron.
<= Into: SL Tirna Q'jira transferred in from Platform Daedalus.

Medals:
Medal of Instruction (MoI) awarded to LCM J'Lek Arcanos. Good work.

Competitions

Wing One Communications Inititative (In Progress: 2/21/2004 - 3/7/04)
    Participants: Pilots of Wing I
Medals to be Awarded: IS-SR to highest number of *players* played, IS-BR to highest number of wins.
    Missions/Battles: None. MSN Messenger Required.
    Instructions: http://www.ehtiecorps.org/competitions/details.asp?ID=1784.

From MAJ Brin Chaser's Competitions Details:

Huh?: In an attempt to get the Wing talking to each other during rec time - the Wing Commander has augmented some of the communications terminals with... suspicious software, which allows pilots (among other things) to challenge each other to a variety of games. Pilots are required to email screenshots of their victories over their comrades to the WC, being sure to cc the other 'combatant'. All MSN games are eligible for submission.

Why?: If we get everyone on MSN, we have a nifty new way to get pilots from different squadrons in contact with each other. I will create a directory with a list of players you can challenge. Also, playing games against each other using this software isn't all that tricky, and doesn't require uber net connections, giving everyone the chance to mix it up with their wingmates.

Wing One Torus Simulator (In Progress: 2/21/2004 - 3/7/04)
    Participants: Pilots of Wing I
Medals to be Awarded: Iron Star Silver Wings to highest score, Iron Star Bronze Wings to 2nd place.
Missions/Battles: 'Torus Trooper' Game found here http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/tt0_22.zip (6mb download)
    Instructions: http://www.ehtiecorps.org/competitions/details.asp?ID=1776.

From MAJ Brin Chaser's Competitions Details:

Huh?: As one of his first Wing Initiatives, the new WC has installed a Torus Trooper simulator in the Wing I Cantina to assess(and improve) pilot reaction times. Pilots need to send a screenshot of their highscore to the WC to be considered for reward, as the data can be used to evaluate pilot strengths and weaknesses.

Why?: I've heard talk that people are getting tired of flying the same platforms day in and day out. Thusly, we mix things up a little :-P

Weekly Activity

This week, I'd like to propose for the squadron to fly one more single free mission: TIE-FREE Battle #232 - Ain't Technology Wonderful?. You can find it in the Mission Compendium (for the irrepressibly lazy, here's a link: http://www.ehtiecorps.org/battles/battle.asp?record=991). It's only a few minutes of time, and the comments paint a very good picture. For those of you who only have XWA working, a substitute is XWA-FREE Battle #98 - Operation Divide and Conquer: Part 1 (It's located at this link: http://www.ehtiecorps.org/battles/battle.asp?record=943). It's the same as last week and the one before it, but no one flew it so... :P

Otherwise, have a good week. That's not a recommendation. That's an order. :)

Communications

For this week, I can only direct you to the "We need to reopen the Wing I Cantina!" topic on the Wing I message board. You'll just have to read it for yourself. :P Here's the link: http://mb.emperorshammer.net/viewtopic.php?t=912&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0.

Bad Pun of the Week

In the early 1900s, the president of America went to visit Russia. Of course, Russia was still ruled by the Czar back then, and the American President was warmly welcomed by the whole Russian royal household. As the two leaders and their entourages were dining one day, in one of the huge dining rooms in the palace, the Americans were telling the Russians about some of the great things in their country. One of the topics of conversaion was the Grand Canyon in Colorado. Of course, the American were quite boastful about this being the largest canyon in the world, when suddenly, from the head of the table, the Czar stood up,and made an announcement.

"In Russia," he said, "we have a canyon even bigger than your Grand Canyon!"

Now no-one was going to stand up and contradict the Czar, but of course no-one believed him either.

Finally, the American president stood up, and said "Okay. Let's see this canyon then."

So an expedition was organised. Of course, their destination was way out in the remote wilderness, and they only had horses to travel with, so the going was slow. But eventually, after several weeks gruellingjourney, they finally arrived at where the canyon was supposed to be. But there wasn't one. Not even a little one.

And then it dawned on everyone - he had been using Czar chasm to make them look stupid.

The Last Word

This has been a strange week, alternatingly disheartening and joyful. This week has also proven to be what I hope will be the beginning of our true rebirth. We've done excellently this week. That I cannot express enough. I am proud of you all, and I will continue to do my best to true to serve you to the peak of my abilities. There's something to be said for everyone in the squadron, and together we will show Wing I and the Sovereign exactly what a driving force can be. I look to this coming week with the utmost in curiosity tinged with a great deal of hope.

For this week, however, it's your commander signing out.

"Find me sitting by myself, no excuses, then I know..."

Sincerely,
Serin "Yakman" Jansj
