"The quiet hum of the holoprojector whirled to life, casting an azure glow over the speaking Squadron Commander. 'Greetings pilots. Look lively. Now, onto the briefing...'"

Squadron News

As always, I hope everyone's had a good week. We seem to be getting into a bit of a rut with activity lately, I think. Even so, we're doing decently -- I've seen activity from myself, J'Lek, and Hunter. That's pretty good. I regret not being able to release a Communique this week, but I will make it up for in next week's version. There's also another free mission scheduled for this issue's Weekly Activity. Try to fly it you at all possible; I don't have to remind you how short some of these are. :P

Sadly, there have been some rather serious roster changes this week. I was forced to remove inactive pilots from our squadron. These pilots were Captain Death Angel, for being Missing In Action (MIA), and LT Miles Teg for being Absent With Out Leave (AWOL). This is extremely unfortunate, since we've got Max transferring out to Thunder Squadron as well very soon. However, it will pass. I've already got word from J'Lek on the possibility of a new cadet, and I'm going to begin work on recruiting myself soon. We need to get ourselves back on our feet.

There haven't been too many updates this week, as far as Beta Echelon goes. Two competitions have been released by our Wing Commander Brin Chaser, which are shown below (and please try to engage in these if at possible), and you can find more information in this report and on the website. The History / Canon section is, of course, still chugging along at its own pace.

I'd like to point out that I -still- haven't receieved any word from you on the ideas of squadron and flight mottos, nicknames, mascots, etc., so I've decided to go ahead with my own plans and hopefully create something new, especially with two pilots just having transferred out. I'm still trying to get on with others about our squadron patch, but I think we'll have it resolved soon, and we'll be able to wear our patches proudly. :)

Finally, in the more flavorful section of our reports, Serin Jansj has been spotted in the Wing I Cantina lately, desperately attempting to defend the honor of his favorite Ewok Band, The Fuzz. J'Lek Arcanos has returned from his leave last week, and is doing well and out of bacta treatment. Conker Blackwood has been taken off this week for remedial latrine duty, but management has decided to keep the ysalamari and wooden spoon, just in case. :P He has also been spotted on Aurora Prime, messing around on the grounds of some strange cathedral. In other events, a pack of furry cattle like animals have been noted in several locations around Beta Squadron quarters. More on this as it becomes available.

Promos:
None this week.

Transfers:
=> CPT Death Angel declared MIA and transferred to the Reserves.
=> LT Miles Teg declared AWOL and transferred to the Reserves.
=> CM Max is transferring out to Thunder Squadron (pending, sometime in the next millenia).

Medals:
None at this time.

Competitions

Wing One Communications Inititative (In Progress: 2/21/2004 - 3/7/04)
    Participants: Pilots of Wing I
Medals to be Awarded: IS-SR to highest number of *players* played, IS-BR to highest number of wins.
    Missions/Battles: None. MSN Messenger Required.
    Instructions: http://www.ehtiecorps.org/competitions/details.asp?ID=1784.

From MAJ Brin Chaser's Competitions Details:

Huh?: In an attempt to get the Wing talking to each other during rec time - the Wing Commander has augmented some of the communications terminals with... suspicious software, which allows pilots (among other things) to challenge each other to a variety of games. Pilots are required to email screenshots of their victories over their comrades to the WC, being sure to cc the other 'combatant'. All MSN games are eligible for submission.

Why?: If we get everyone on MSN, we have a nifty new way to get pilots from different squadrons in contact with each other. I will create a directory with a list of players you can challenge. Also, playing games against each other using this software isn't all that tricky, and doesn't require uber net connections, giving everyone the chance to mix it up with their wingmates.

Wing One Torus Simulator (In Progress: 2/21/2004 - 3/7/04)
    Participants: Pilots of Wing I
Medals to be Awarded: Iron Star Silver Wings to highest score, Iron Star Bronze Wings to 2nd place.
Missions/Battles: 'Torus Trooper' Game found here http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/tt0_22.zip (6mb download)
    Instructions: http://www.ehtiecorps.org/competitions/details.asp?ID=1776.

From MAJ Brin Chaser's Competitions Details:

Huh?: As one of his first Wing Initiatives, the new WC has installed a Torus Trooper simulator in the Wing I Cantina to assess(and improve) pilot reaction times. Pilots need to send a screenshot of their highscore to the WC to be considered for reward, as the data can be used to evaluate pilot strengths and weaknesses.

Why?: I've heard talk that people are getting tired of flying the same platforms day in and day out. Thusly, we mix things up a little :-P

Weekly Activity

This week, I'd like to propose for the squadron to fly one more single free mission: TIE-FREE Battle #137 - The Baker's Dozen. You can find it in the Mission Compendium (for the irrepressibly lazy, here's a link: http://www.ehtiecorps.org/battles/battle.asp?record=477). It's only a few minutes of time, and it's rated very highly as a fun mission. For those of you who only have XWA working, a substitute is XWA-FREE Battle #98 - Operation Divide and Conquer: Part 1 (It's located at this link: http://www.ehtiecorps.org/battles/battle.asp?record=943). It's the same as last week, but no one flew it so... :P.

Otherwise, have a good week. That's not a recommendation. That's an order. :)

General Directives

  • Always try to keep in touch with your CMDR. Let me know you're active by email, contact on AIM, or IRC. I'm here to help.

  • Fly if possible, even if it's only a free mission here and there. Let's keep our skills honed for possible future challenges.

  • Try to do the weekly activity if possible. Check the weekly report for details.

  • Try to get on AOL Instant Messenger, IRC, the Message Boards, or the Beta Squadron email list when you can. Let's get to know each other.

  • Try to be active in some way. Even if you can't fly at the moment, you can take an IWATs course, write a piece of fiction or poetry for the website, create a graphic, write an INPR or touch one up, or contribute to the squadron in some other way.

  • Try to visit the squadron website now and then. You can find current competition listings, the current roster, squadron news, archived reports, communiques, and much more there.

  • If you can, try to recruit some new members into the squadron. Even if they don't want to come to Wing I or Beta, you can always offer a helping hand to a new pilot on Daedalus.

  • Remember that wherever you go, there you are. The Force is strong with Beta.

    Bad Pun of the Week

William Penn, the founder and mayor of Philadelphia, had two aunts - Hattie and Sophia - who were skilled in the baking arts. One day, "Big Bill" was petitioned by the citizens of his town because the three bakeries in the town had, during the Revolution, raised the price of pies to the point that only the rich could afford them.

Not wanting to challenge the bakeries directly, he turned to his aunts and asked their advice. But when they had heard the story, the two old ladies were so incensed over the situation that they offered to bake 100 pies themselves, and sell them for 2 cents lower that any of the bakeries were charging.

It was a roaring success. Their pies sold out quickly, and very soon they had managed to bring down the price of all kinds of pastry in Philadelphia.

In fact, even to this very day, their acheivements are remembered as the remarkable Pie rates of Penn's aunts.

    The Last Word

Well, this has been something of a bittersweet week for Beta Squadron We're two men down, and not as strong or as active as we could be, but we're up to three men participating this week as opposed to just two in the last report. As with last week, please try to participate in the Weekly Activity if possible, and also in Brin's competitions. They're really fun, especially Torus Trooper! :P We're coming up, I think. I really think so.

For this week, however, it's your commander signing out.

    "It's a kind of magic..."

    Sincerely,
    Serin "Yakman" Jansj
