Alpha Report # 326 (2023-07-01)

This report was submitted by CMDR/LC Alejandro Araujo/Alpha/Wing I/ISDII Hammer

"Lag is the pathway to many abilities some consider to be...untiming..." - Darth Penguinius the Unloadable.

"What have I loaded?"
"You are overloading your bandwidth, Lagakin"
    - Lagakin Netbrowser and Darth Penguinius.

"We put the 'Special' in Special Operations" - CM "Falcon Kid" LQC-75-3 (Alpha III-4)

-"Finished you say?

Master Net-WAN, not even downloaded. The shroud of the low-speed has fallen. Begun, the Bandwidth Wars has".
Master Net-WAN Kilobit and Grand Master Load.

-"See yea then don't let the door hit you on the way out!"
-Someone professing his appreciation for that despicable Lag Batch that has been flying using the old ways for years now.

"It isn't the killing, you know. It's the beauty of battles that I love —the choreography and the challenge of executing everything just right—and the challenge of matching your wits against a capable opponent. I guess I carry a little more Thrawn with me than I'd like to believe."

Intro & News

Well, well, well. Squadron (Re)Mobilization is over. Lots of things happened, lots of things were done. You'll have here the report for this short week as I'm doing the tally for the MSE/NGE as I told you guys...

I'm proud of what some of you did and I'm not so proud or rather disappointed at how some were absent. I'd say I'm frustrated about those goals that I could have done but I didn't. Then I recall there were moments where I couldn't cobble together two words out of exhaustion. Couple things are for sure: boy I love the X-W series and I love the Empire. And I truly enjoy flying with fine wings like some of you gents.  I also enjoy reading a good story.

So as usual, I'll repost the relevant news , then review what we did in this short week.

  • From the office of our FC:

  • From the office of our TCCOM:

    ===no major news===

  • From the office of our SOO:

  • From the desk of our COO:

X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, and X-Wing Alliance are all on sale on Good Old Games for $3.50! Get them while they're hot to take part in singleplayer and multiplayer games! You can buy the entire series for under $15.

  • From the office of our WOO:

===Note: ReMob ended. Basically Phoenix reminded ua to inform him of any last minute wiki/iu/fiction submission. Now that it is over, the announcemets did their purpose. I want to thank him or putting up such a complete competition. Also thanks for carrying on the task of running the tally here. Excellent work!===

  • From the office of our IO:

"I am pleased to announce the award of the Gold Star of the Empire to LC Westric Davalorn!

Thanks for all of your hard work as we've worked through this project.

For exceptional and noteworthy service to the Emperor’s Hammer Internet and Reconnaissance Offices. In support of the Internet Office, LC Westric Davalorn led the effort to modernize the web site’s Craft List using updated models and rendering techniques to generate higher-resolution renders. After developing a suitable rendering process, working over a period of months he meticulously completed 170 renders of craft depicted on the Craft List by working with models sourced primarily from the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade team. This volume of work is no casual undertaking. In addition to 3D models sourced externally, Westric took the initiative to update Emperor’s Hammer-original models. This included 3D editing and assembly of disparate components to update craft OPTs (models), as well as utilizing techniques such as AI upscaling to update ship textures. This work improved the quality of the finished product, and will also be a resource for future efforts in updating the downloadable ship patches for use within the upgraded X-Wing Alliance platform. The final rendered images are currently available on the Craft List, and will be a valuable asset as information for the Fleet Manual and Order of Battle is updated and transitioned over to the new site. Leveraging these skills and techniques to support multiple projects, Westric also completed 29 renders in support of the Reconnaissance Office’s social media outreach efforts. These renders were successfully used in nearly 90 social media posts, and directly contributed to the Reconnaissance Office’s efforts to depict the thematic elements of the Emperor’s Hammer and the TIE Corps. LC Westric Davalorn’s performance of duty is in keeping with the finest traditions of Emperor’s Hammer service, and reflects great credit upon himself, Rho Squadron of Wing II, and the ISDII Warrior."

"Newsletter Archives Updated and Extended I am pleased to be able to announce some improvements in our archived club materials. As of a couple of days ago, we have completed a restoration of numerous archived club newsletters, such as the Emperor's Hammer Dark Sentinel and TIE Corps Battlecry, and related materials. This one has been on my list for a couple years now. With about a week of Squadron (Re)Mobilization remaining, this content should provide some additional resources to support the Wiki editing tasks for our members who enjoy trawling through historical Emperor's Hammer information. These changes include:

    • Restored the original Dark Sentinel ZIPs that contain the additional non-embedded files for NLs 13-47. These came from 15+ year old server backups, and I think had not been publically available since that time.
    • Manually de-virused NLs 46 and 47 (which contained a macro virus since they were originally released!) and updated the ZIPs.
    • Found and uploaded the long-lost NL 105.
    • Corrected NL 111 numbering (originally issued as a duplicate of 107).
    • Moved everything onto the archives subdomain and built 301 redirects. Updated the newsletter archive (https://tc.emperorshammer.org/newsletters.php) to provide updated and accurate links to each edition.
    • Removed the PDF copies of NLs 1-47 since these were essentially 'pictures' of the front page of the newsletter, and didn't contain the actual embedded content.
    • Uploaded the TIE Corps Battlecry archive as well as some misc newsletter-type items (a big thanks to Xander Drax for sending these!).
To get started, members will find most of what they would be looking for on the Newsletters (https://tc.emperorshammer.org/newsletters.php) page. This page now includes links to view/download PDF, HTML, or ZIP versions of the Dark Sentinel, as applicable/available. In the near future the Logistics Officer and I will coordinate the conversion of the 11 remaining pre-NL48 newsletters (when they switched to native HTML format) over to HTML.
Members looking to get more in-depth with the archived materials can head over to the archives site (https://archives.emperorshammer.org/) that now provides a few links for navigating the archives. Most portions of the archives will allow directory browsing, which is useful for viewing the additional files of NLs 1-47 without needing to download the ZIP package. (Some technical information concerning the early NLs is also available at https://wiki.emperorshammer.org/Dark_Sentinel) "

  • From the office of our RO:

Behind the scenes making of The Mandalorian, Season 3 is now available for viewing on Disney+ https://twitter.com/starwars/status/1674085263071408130?t=PCFpE_7jdG0sZh66V_09mQ&s=19

  • From our TO:

Squadron Management Updated! - posted by CPT Sylas Pitt Thanks to the constant feedback from the passionate Squadron Commanders, the Training Office is proud to announce the much-awaited update of Squadron Management 5, becoming Squadron Management 6! A plethora of gratitude is owed to the team behind it's update, LC Vapen Van’an, CPT JetMech, and VA Robert Hogan, and their leader, LC Legion Ordo. Also, considering the Certificate of Naval Doctrine required the completion of SM/5, the certificate has been updated to have the option to choose between SM/5 and SM/6 for the certification completion. Keep in mind that SM/5 is now inactive and can no longer be taken moving forward. This is simply to ensure that those that have earned the certificate do not feel obligated to take the new course to keep their well-earned certification. Check out the course here!

  • From our COM RA Genie:

    ===none===.

  • Weekend Sparrings: Every weekend, you can log in Discord and meet your fellow squad mates for some good PvP practice on 1v1 /2v2 matches. I will be there on Friday nights -4 UTC (EST) and most likely during Saturday and Sunday nights at 21:00.
  • Wiki update: in progress I've been working a lot on the information on our wiki site. It is still a WIP but at least we got the structure of the article after a research on RL SpecOps articles and air force squadrons. Proceeding to fill it. I really suggest you guys fill up your INPRs and wiki articles if you haven't done so. If you do not have wiki access send me the information while we manage to get you a working account if possible. Updated our roster and revised the squadron wiki and added a page for Operation: Slumber Party. I am considering using the Wiki to post information that I repeatedly post here.
  • WSR format So I know the text on the evaluation is borked. I'm no html expert and I've been using "Pre" instead of just "p" ahh... There have been discussions on WSRs, updating them , their frequency, format. Been considering dumping the information that is being repeated on a wiki page and just give you eval and news. Rosters? you get rosters when you see eval...see what I mean?

Competitions

Basically (Re)Mob ended, the standings are here: https://tc.emperorshammer.org/comps/remob5.php . Don't be lazy, go there and see how we did. Compare with the top squadrons. Gamma was too busy with (Re)Mob so we'll give them time to rest, then we'll retry the competition with them. Because we are that nice.

Highlighted Competitions:

So, Alpha's Slumber Party (yes, click here) :v

(Brief) Description:

Every month, pilots from Alpha squadron will fly PvP matches against pilots of a designated squadron of the TIE Corps. Alpha will fly against every single other unit of the TC, one squadron per month. Performance metrics will determine the winning pilots and the winning squadron. The objective isn’t much to spam LoCs but to create unit cohesion, build unit morale and motivation and obtain field experience against real opponents. Get the ball rolling in terms of training towards participating in other online events.

Full details can be found here (click) or here (click)
Input form: Input form (click)

===Slumber Party will return after some brief advertisement from our sponsors :P ===

Observation:As a TC CMDR, I failed to take us into the top tiers. I need to do better.

As a commander of a squadron, I saw that some of our active pilots had some fun moments (I hope...at least for me those moments we shared together were fun and I felt like I am leading a unit of elite pilots; skills, tactics, camaraderie, teamwork)

As an individual pilot I did it: top the MP killboards, beat Woody, compete using the classics, proving they can be used to fly and be competitive, broke my own MSE record for PvP (and possibly other TC records) and no, this wouldn't be my first SS haha. It is funny, it is like I began existing for others.

As Meat Loaf said: Two out of three ain't bad, I guess. The reasons behind my return to activity lies in the fact I really want the games to be part of the club and I want to create missions and fiction around them. I play other games but I'm on the TC for this purpose...so I kinda promote them. I did the 15+ PvP kills, mission creation, 10k words of fiction, 12...no wait, like14-15 wiki articles, SP free missions and 2 IUs...but I can't do everything. Nor will I burn the few who collaborate. I need to cull the inactivity and fill up the ranks so each pilot has fun performing with high quality in low doses. I think I can specialize in PvP but that will have to wait until I finish focusing on other aspects like squadron lore, campaigns, etc.

Observation: You know, like those cavalry charges he came in and lend me a hand when I was too tired. I need to be careful about not burning him out. We had an interesting set of matches tho...

Miscellaneous

  • Wiki Articles

As planned, I've started creating a number of wiki articles to place information we've been repeating here Wiki (click here) article for this. I waited for ReMob so I could help the squadron with the creation of a number of wiki articles but the goal is to place pertinent information there, avoid cluttering the WSR and keeping information handy for the unit. I updated our standing orders with a general explanation and links (217 words, enough for it to be the first Wiki edition) for the first new articles: Alpha Squadron Operations and Alpha Squadron Auxiliary Platforms.

  • Campaign Role Play.

The first article is a Wiki entry (click here) article for this. This should help define and explain our long term goals.

  • Auxiliary Platforms

As the EHTC adopts the concept of secondary games, we expand further on it and propose a list for us all to have fun with other squad mates. I dumped this list into a wiki page (click here) and update it as we see fit.

  • Star Wars Book List:

As the site says "This is a simple list of all of the full-length Star Wars novels to date, in chronological order of when the stories take place, with the movies and TV shows also added for context. This list does not include most young readers' books or short novellas, or TV shows aimed at young children. Books whose stories overlap within the same timeline are listed in recommended reading order based on my own judgement. Release dates are for the US - dates and availability may vary in other countries". You can check this most useful list here: https://www.yodasdatapad.com/booklist.html. Bookmark it! I already did!!!

Praise be the Lag!

Monthly General Orders

Schedule Planning:

Have some rest for the nxt couple weeks while I sort things out.

GoG XW Series

The classic Star Wars games (TIE Fighter, XvT, XWA, etc.) are available for digital sale at https://www.gog.com/ and http://steampowered.com/. The GOG version is generally preferred by most members for ease of patching with custom EH game content.

TCCORE

This basic IU course will help you familiarize with EHTC's procedures. I highly recommend you take it in case you haven't.

Update uniform, INPR and wiki character article!:

This goes for me as well. Each time you get promoted or receive an award you should update your uniform. Yea, I'll update mine.

Commander's Analysis

The results here this month tells me two things: the first is that we need to let go those who can't or aren't interested in participating and the other is that the profile of the active members is one of a like-minded approach of focusing on the games itself, the skills involved and the performance.

Ranks need to be replenished with more like-minded pilots while we build our lore, rules, drills, etc.

Closing

If we think about it, we kinda resemble a SpecOps unit insofar as doing activities conducted by specially designated, organized, selected, trained and equipped forces using unconventional techniques and modes of employment.

The classics are unconventional and specialized platforms. Unlike most folks, we are focusing on the art of dogfighting and employing tactics to be efficient -not just effective, but efficient, notice my wording. If you are effective, you do a job properly; if you are efficient, you do it quickly and easily. Skill is needed for this and experience is what you obtain. You use this experience in new challenges and improve yourself continuously, one struggle after another.

Again, I have an urge to downshift the rhythm and focus on those little details that make a difference so I'm taking my damn sweet time to choose my words for you. Therefore, mark my words: Those of you who did something, even if it was constant communication and moral support, have my appreciation, respect, gratitude and I feel proud of leading you. Pryde, LPhoenix, LQC, Horus, Milo, Cremel.

To Ty: I'll always remember you as a good pilot that followed orders. You were a great asset to the squadron, the ship and the club in general. I want to thank you for being so kind to provide feedback on your way out. I will take it to the brass as they'll appreciate the input.

For the rest. Yea, you can always redeem yourselves while the system allows it. That means, for as long as you do not fall under the AWOL / InvolRSV rules you can make a comeback. I want to see actions, not just words. This unit has a reputation to rebuild and that won't be built by itself, we have to practice, communicate, coordinate and develop efforts, tactics, backstory. Also: we owe it to each other. We are a team, remember it.

Those who know me are aware I don't say things just for the protocol. I'm being sincere here. I may be harsh and blunt, but I'm honest.

I'm not perfect either. I didn't do all the IUs as I expected to... I couldn't coordinate you guys to fly PvEs or PvPs between each other, let alone manage to get us a game with Gamma. Also I still have a lot of pending tasks so I'll use this time to get to it. For that reason and to give Gamma some rest before flying us, we won't have a Slumber Party at least for a couple weeks.

As you can see, during the month some were active, some weren't active. That is a fact. The reasons are many but the effects are the same. We could've done more. I don't want you to endlessly grind. I would have been more than happy if we flew a couple fun PvEs or 2v2s so those zeros in the MSE are truly disappointing. To you I say: consider your options if you really want to be active on the TC. No shame in requesting a transfer to RSV. Be honest to the squadron, your CMDR and more important, to yourself.

Again, I'm happy for what we did not because I'm obliged to say so, but because I enjoyed reading Pryde's work and I can use it as a source for my own fictions and because I loved winging LPhoenix and LQC. I truly felt as the CMDR of a SO unit. I also appreciate Horus and Pryde's support: In hard times you need friends that are blunt and give you insight and ask the right questions. And I enjoyed winging Milo as well. I'm also glad to see Cremel is back...sort of...

I truly wanted to do more, but I also wanted to be active during a competition and show the TC what I can do using the platforms virtually no one uses anymore. That's for another, larger bittersweet discussion. The fact is, I topped the MP killboards during a fleet-wide competition. Yea, finally beat Woody. Proof that anyone can gain points by flying the good old games we learned to love.

On this topic, flying against newbies allows you to try new tactics but if you overextend your interaction, you risk losing skills due to hubris and lack of a real challenge. Flying between us, against each other is the solution. Yea, do the casual game with new folks and test your maneuvers before going against seasoned players. Everything in life is about balance. Allow yourself to lose against your squadmate, learn the lessons, find joy in the game itself, forget the outcome and focus on achieving the kill or evading. Eventually, you'll get it, even under laggy weather.

To be honest, towards the proposed goals, we didn't do well. That is, in terms of quantity. But in terms of fun moments well, we did have good moments. We also had lessons to learn. Biggest lesson is to understand there has to be doses on the amount of gaming we do and purposes. Some found purpose in a medal, some others in victory and well I personally enjoy the game per se, pretty much like the aforementioned statement from Pellaeon. Those moments when we wrote fiction or when I figured out the right template for our character sheets on the wiki or when we flew PvEs on XvT were priceless. Fiction is a window to get to know more about your squad mates and yourself. It also helps sorting out ideas in your head. I want to focus on this.

So, in terms of quality, we did have good moments I value. I hope you do find the value as well.

And I'll add something Genie mentioned about not limiting ourselves to ReMob for doing these things. Yea, our project will take us into building our characters, maintaining operational readiness via SP/PvE/PvP training and eventually we'll fly the campaigns, one step at time.

Do we want to change our ships? not really, we found they do have potential. Granted, I'd work on the design of the SPEC but that's for another discussion.

I want to point out that during this exercise, the only 2 units fielding a full strength roster are Rho and Alpha. The rest had fewer pilots, therefore their threshold for tiers was lower. If they had individual pilots with high grinding capacity, no wonder about the amazing performance...we had a relatively high proportion of dead weight. This is my fault, I allowed inactivity for far too long expecting comebacks that would never happen. I intend to correct this. Only 7 out of 12 pilots did something during this month.

All in all, we did something, we took a step towards our strategic goals and now the new generations of the TC are aware of what we can do. We are no strangers to the club , we were just dormant and we have our own rhythm. Don't encourage us; we encourage ourselves hehe. They expect us to have the same levels of activity on future events. Well, we expect them to participate more in MP on the classics. Slumber Party will continue later and we will visit each unit and attempt to share fun matches with them, regardless of the winner, the aim is to play on the platforms that inspired the TC to exist.

For now, we regroup, rest, rearm, re-train and continue moving towards our goals one step at time. Dismissed!

Yea, that's from Magadascar Penguins, not intending copyright things here, just a reference..

.

March to victory my penguins!
