RHO WEEKLY SQUADRON REPORT #4

REPORTING OFFICER: Colonel Hav Antiel, Squadron Commander
DATE SUBMITTED: 11 May 2020

SQUADRON COMMANDER'S FICTION: 'Nose Art Part 1'

For Hav, it was the end of a long day. Up early for scheduling, then sortie planning, leading the flight briefing, suiting up and stopping by the ops desk before finally getting the TIE Interceptors out into space, flying the sortie, returning to the Warrior, logging records back at the squadron barracks, preparing and then leading the debrief.

Normally, the last part of Hav’s day was spent in the cantina for the real debrief with his pilots, but today he was heading back to the hangar to talk to his crew chief, Chapman.

Chapman was an inexperienced yet eager crewman, and Hav liked his enthusiasm. The Warrior’s maintenance crew had earned a reputation for being ornery and overly protective of their fighters: precisely the reason that Hav had pushed for new recruits when Rho was reactivated.

Hav found Chapman elbows-deep in the sensor compartment of the CMDR’s TIE Interceptor, Pink Bantha V. Standing on a raised platform, the mechanic was silent in his work, a bright headlamp illuminating the cramped area in the front “chin” of the fighter.

“Chapman,” Hav said, trying not to startle him.

Chapman pulled his arms free of the TIE and turned around, his headlamp blinding the CMDR.

“Ah, sorry Colonel,” he said, blushing. “Is something wrong?”

“No,” said the CMDR. “Not at all. She flew like a beaut today, and like I said, we’ve figured out the laser convergence issue from last time.”

“That’s good, sir,” Chapman nodded. His furrowed brow told Hav that he was wondering why the squadron commander was visiting him in the hangar again.

“Listen, Chapman, there’s something I’d like to do with the ship that’s a little… beyond regulation.”

The mechanic frowned but nodded.

“The pilots were talking about painting their TIEs with old-school nose art,” said Hav. “Like the kind you’d find on those old Republic Gunships, you know?”

“OK,” said Chapman. “That sounds pretty cool.” He looked back at the TIE Interceptor and Hav could tell he was itching to get back to work. Hav realized that even though his own duty was over for the day, Chapman was still working.

“Right, so,” said Hav. “If I give you the holodisk, can you take a look?”

“Sure,” said Chapman.

“Cool,” said Hav, as he pulled the well-worn holodisk and miniprojector from his tunic. He hesitated for a moment before handing the disk up to Chapman: he’d never shared this image with another living soul.

Chapman activated the disk and the image of a curvaceous, dark-haired human appeared. The figure was lying seductively on her back with one leg pointing straight up and the other bent at the knee. There wasn’t much left to the imagination.

“Whoa,” said Chapman, squinting and holding the holograph close. “Who is she?”

“A close personal friend,” Hav said, his gaze hardening.

Chapman kept staring at the holograph. Hav felt his temperature rising.

“So, can you paint it?” he asked.

“Paint it?” Chapman repeated. He didn’t look up from the holograph.

“Yeah, that’s the nose art I want painted on my TIE. Can you do it?”

“No can do, sir,” said Chapman, his mouth agape. “I’m not an artist.”

“Give me that!” he bellowed, snatching the holodisk. “Forget it,” Hav huffed. “As you were, Chapman.”

“Wait, Colonel!” Chapman called after the retreating CMDR.

Hav begrudgingly turned around. His face was red. I can’t believe I showed him that, he thought to himself.

“There’s a mechanic in Theta Squadron that can probably do it,” said Chapman. “He does good work. I think he’s the guy that painted the nose art on Lieutenant D’Arc’s Interceptor.”

Hav was still fuming, but he pushed those feelings down. After all, he did want the nose art. But Theta’s mechanic pool was notoriously cocky, especially the crew chief, a guy named—

“Mountebank is his name, sir,” said Chapman. “He’s the crew chief for Theta. Just show him that special holograph and he’ll set you up.”

CLOSING COMMENTS

Lots of great activity happening in the squadron this week. We're up to six pilots with SL Apos Steem, which is great! I'm pleased with the Rho Run-On on Discord, and I had fun catching up with Drake and Griggs in the voice channel on Discord on Saturday.

I sent a Google Form survey with the options for the squadron nickname and motto. Please respond to the survey by next Monday.

Now get out there and remind 'em who the bad guys are.
