Omega Report # 0 (2003-02-08)

This report was submitted by COL Sasquatch

Greetings all, and welcome to another Omega Squadron report. I'll try not to be as windy as last time ... but as usual, we have a lot to talk about.

Squadron News
-----------------------

- The big news this week was the re-opening of the Sovereign Squadron League (SSL)! I can still remember the SSL's glory days, when it truly was THE competition to be involved in. Only the best of the best ever made it into the playoffs, and that's exactly where I would like to see Omega be this time.
'Back in the day', the SSL was a standard part of the TIE Corps, the major competition that spawned rivalries, made (or broke) reputations, and set precedents for how a competition should be run. Sadly, the last running of the SSL was never truly completed, due to circumstances beyond the control of several key officers. I stand confident that we will not see something like that happen again. I'm excited to see the SSL return, and I think you guys should begin getting ready for it. If you know you can't fly TIE for some reason, if you're missing a joystick ... now is the time to have these things resolved. The SSL reigns again this March.

- There was a lot of discussion this week concerning Omega's uniforms. As Grue pointed out, none of us have uniforms posted since the TC database came back up after the CrystalTech unpleasantness. And currently, the traditional red Omega uniform is not approved by the Ops, which means it can't be displayed on the database.
So what we need to do is agree on a uniform template to try and get approval on. To that end, several graphics files have made their way through the email list this week, and most are attached to this report (in the .ZIP archive) :

Omega_Uniform_Template.jpg is our current template for Omega uniforms, as prepared by LC Ixion.
Omega - Sasquatch Unofficial.jpg, also by X, is an example of how the template can be used.
different patch versions.jpg was created by CPT Night Grue as an alternative for how the Omega patch could be replaced by a version which looks more like our current banner.
Template1.jpg and Template2.jpg were created by X, also to show the effects of changing the traditional patch to the squadron banner.

Everyone have a look at these graphics, and pay careful attention to Omega_Uniform_Template.jpg. Unless I hear any strong complaints, this is what I will be submitting to the Ops office for approval. I've heard a few people support the idea of changing the patch to look more like the banner, but most of you seem to want to keep the traditional patch.

- We're still trying to sort out the Omega website. Former Omega CMDR General Devin has graciously offered to continue hosting the site, and will be "turning over the keys" of the site itself shortly. COL Brian has offered to perform regular site updates, and I plan to help him (maybe we can take turns updating the site each week). FO Priyum has also extended the deadline for all websites to be up-to-snuff by an additional two weeks, so it would appear that we now have more than enough time to get everything in order before the website police come looking for us ;-)

- New high scores were set this week by both CPT Night Grue and LCM Ernest Penfold! Excellent flying, gentlemen.

- The SBOTM for January concluded, and here are the abbreviated results (as prepared by LC Todbringer) :

PART I - TIE Fighter
a) Total Scores (Best Pilot)
1. CPT Night "Suave" Grue / Omega Squadron - 237.678
2. LCM Dark Eagle / Yod Squadron - 236.932
3. LC Philo / Yod Squadron - 230.320
4. MAJ Carl Lost / Sin Squadron - 210.929
5. COL Brian / Omega Squadron - 191.612
6. MAJ Koriel / Sigma Squadron - 137.553
7. CPT Keller / Aleth Squadron - 131.459
8. LCM HicRic / Kaph Squadron - 115.676
9. CM Gyssler / Gamma Squadron - 111.521
10. LCM Szu / Zayin Squadron - 94.255
11. COL Ricardo / Lamed Squadron - 81.068
12. LT Bob Fett / Sin Squadron - 70.904
13. MAJ Talons Pryde / Alpha Squadron - 53.932
14. LT Moonquaker / Gamma Squadron - 12.333

Excellent work by Grue, who took first place and was awarded a new pair of Gold Wings for his Iron Star. Nice work also by COL Brian, who finished in the top 5 ... not too shabby at all ;-)

- I've had only one possible Omegan recommended to me this week, from those who bothered to look. LCM Penfold has recommended another pilot from the Colossus. Only having one pilot to choose from doesn't give us much of a selection. Being an elite squadron means picking and choosing our pilots ... it can be seen as either a blessing or a curse, but I much prefer to see it as a blessing. If anyone on the emeritus list has any recommendations for future pilots, let me know. In addition, I will be 'cruising the rosters' this weekend to add some possible pilots to our list of candidates. Remember, it's not too late to recommend someone to be considered until all three spots are filled.

- Speaking of Penfold ... another week, another insane batch of pilot files! We used to have a name for guys like you Penfold ... we used to called you 'Flying Freaks' ;-)
Keep up the good work!

Squadron Orders
-------------------------

- The Sovereign Battle of the Month (SBOTM) for February is active until 02.28.03. Battles to fly are :

TIE-TC 183 (Defection of Kusanagi)
XvT-TC 31 (Pirate Scouts)
XWA-TC 24 (The History of the SSSD Sovereign)

Submissions should go to LC Philo ( cnwilde@pacbell.net ), with a CC for yours truly.

- Operation : Outrageous Fortune seemed to come out of nowhere this week! But Wing II and Wing III have been placed under our protection, and there's already been a 'fleet engagement'. Fly FREE-TIE # 145, "Angels and Demons". Send your pilot file to COL Stele Pelleon ( tieknt@juno.com ), don't forget to CC me.

- Rat pack banner competition is still ongoing, the goal being to design a banner for the newly re-formed "Rat Pack". Submissions go into LC Mike ( suttonboy@ehnet.org ), with a CC for COM/AD Proton and myself.

Misc.
--------

- Overall, I was VERY impressed with the level of activity this week. So much as for Omega being the 'retirement' squadron. It's amazing what you can accomplish by threatening to throw people into the Wing I barracks.

- Speaking of which ... Compton and Janich ... I'm afraid you are the only two unlucky pilots who failed to gain at least one FCHG point this week. You know what that means.

(*Compton and Janich look around nervously*)

I want you each to remember, as you're being blindfolded and led to Wing I, that I'm only doing this for your own good, and with your best interests in mind. NOW GET 'EM!!!

(*A brief scuffle breaks out ... the condemned will not go easily*)

Brian, Grue ... get these two over to Wing I.

And the rest of you ... Fly high, and watch your six!
