Omega Report # 0 (2003-03-16)

This report was submitted by COL Sasquatch

Greetings everyone, welcome to another edition of the Omega Squadron report. And awaaaaaaaaaay we go ...

Squadron News
-----------------------

- Big news this week was the beginning of the resurrected Sovereign Squadron League! The SSL has received a major facelift, and has begun anew. This is a fleet-wide competition, and as an elite squadron, we definitely need to make a good showing. I've said it before, I'll say it again -- if we can't win, I want to at least make it into the playoffs. Gentlemen, to your cockpits!

No, not now ... you can finish reading the report first.

- A couple of medal awards to report for this week! Congrats to CPT Night Grue, who has been awarded the Iron Star with Gold Wings [IS-GW] for his excellent performance in the SBOTM. Also, the Medal of Tactics with Red Hammer [MoT-RH] was been awarded to LCM Ernest Penfold, who has created TC-TIE # 204. Excellent work, both of you!

- After everything was cleared with the Flight Office, LC Todbringer officially transferred into the squad this week. I'm happy to report that he has received a warm welcome from almost everyone. I know Tod will make an excellent addition to the squad -- welcome to Omega, Todbringer!

- I noticed some dead links on the official Omega roster at EH.NET, namely the links for our message board and the old Flight 3 homepage. These links have been removed. Speaking of our rosters, I couldn't help but notice that we have no flight mottos or nicknames (with the exception of Flight 1's motto, "Semper Colon!"). This would be an excellent activity for our two flight leaders to engage in. Be sure to poll each of the pilots in your flight, and let's try to come up with some nicks and mottos.

- Update on new members : LC Zystem Friar has politely declined his invitation to join the squadron, but mainly because of numerous RL commitments. He has suggested that he might be able to join sometime during or after this June. Also, LC Sequoh Marden continues to be a fly on the Omega Squadron wall ;-)

- Lots of talk this week regarding the free-to-download game StarShatter ( www.starshatter.com ), which some people are projecting to be the future of the Emperor's Hammer. Regardless of how important it becomes to the EH in the future, it seems that the Science Office is hard at work on making numerous patches to 'adjust' the game to our needs. This is probably going to be something of a hot topic in the months to come, so it would be a good idea for everyone to have at least a passing familiarity with the game.

- CPT Night Grue has been quite busy this week! Besides recently achieving the rank of Gladiator in the FCHG, he has also set new high scores for TC-TIE # 59 and FREE-TIEs # 106 and # 130. Well done, Grue! Put your next few 'Bloody Rebels' on my tab.

- We have recently been challenged to a squadron competition with Sigma Squadron, Todbringer's old squad-mates. I have accepted CMDR/MAJ Koriel's challenge, so an Omega vs. Sigma comp is now officially "in the works". I'll have more news for everyone as soon as we get some of the details hammered out.

- Red Team saw some more action in Operation : Outrageous Fortune this week, although I haven't heard anything about the results yet. I believe the odds were again stacked in our favor for this encounter, so I'd be very surprised if we sustained any heavy losses. Great job by Brian, Grue, and Brandon, who along with myself all participated in the single player portion for this round, despite the VERY short deadline -- which was mostly my fault. Op:OF was due to have some ground fighting with JK II and Galactic Battlegrounds during this turn, so it will be interesting to see how things turn out.

- Several new changes have been made to the SSSD Sovereign's website at http://sov.minos.net , mostly to prepare for the data that will be generated by the running of the SSL. Be sure to stop by and check it out.

Squadron Orders
-------------------------

- Primary Orders are to participate in Combat Run # 1 of the SSL by flying FREE-TIE # 215, "Minos Cluster, Pi Squadron", which I have attached to this report for your convenience. Additionally, any pilots wanting to participate in the XvT and XWA divisions should complete FREE-XvT # 120 and FREE-XWA # 75, respectively. However, I would like to emphasize that your primary concern should be with the completion of FREE-TIE # 215 for the TIE division. Send your pilot files in to me, and don't forget that the deadline is March 27th.

- Our competition with Sigma Squadron will be started shortly, as soon as some basic guidelines are decided on (rules, rewards, scoring, etc). Although the SSL takes precedence, Sigma Squadron is no slouch -- we're going to need to get everyone in to their cockpits if we want to have a chance at winning this one. Be ready!
