Omega Report # 0 (2003-06-09)

This report was submitted by GN Sasquatch

Strap in everyone, it's time for the Omega Squadron report! Brought to you by Mountain Dew. Mountain Dew : Who Needs Kidneys?

Well, the report's a day late again this week. No excuses this time, I just didn't get around to it yesterday. There aren't enough hours in the day.

Squadron News
------------------------

- Lots of news and internal happenings to go over this week. First off, we have a new pilot! Welcome to the squad, MAJ Artyis! Artyis has already been flying like crazy, even though he's been here less than a week! Also, Artyis was recently moved from the 2-4 position to Omega 3-4, so that he and Todbringer could be in the same flight.

- The Imperial Security Medal has been awarded to LC Todbringer for his outstanding performance ever since joining the squad. Keep up the great work, Tod!

- Ixion is having email problems, which is why he's been so quiet lately. He should hopefully be able to get things fixed soon. Hurry back, X!

- Brandon has gone on shore leave for about a month while he travels Europe. He should return on or about July 14 ... despite being on leave, he managed to fly for CR#7! Now that's dedication. Enjoy your travels, Bran.

- COM/AD Proton is constructing a new homepage for the 'Rat Pack', you can check it out here : http://www.minos.net/~proton/ratpack/rat-splash.htm

- Anyone needing help getting TIE to run on WinXP should check out this link : http://www.tcinternet.net/users/s.sanders/Tie95WinXP/index.htm

Thanks to AD Proton for providing the link.

- Wing II's MAJ Tempest has come up with an idea for 'Imperial Battlechess' : http://tib.minos.net/
I haven't spoken to anyone yet, but if enough of you show an interest, I could see if GN Stele would be generous enough to let us join the fun.

- LCM Dweezil is assembling a TIE Corps webcam site. Anyone who's interested can check it out at : http://tccc.tiecorps.net

- Here's a quick run down on the results for CR#6, courtesy of LC Todbringer :

1. Omega .............................. 181,347
2. Praetorian .......................... 171,648
3. Yod ..................................... 83,598
4. Kappa .................................. 82,969
5. Theta ................................... 76,252
6. Diamondback ....................... 70,860
7. ASF ..................................... 63,443
8. Pi ......................................... 55,709
9. Mem ..................................... 55,427
10. Alpha .................................. 52,225

As you can see, Omega turned in yet another commanding performance! Nicely done, everyone. You guys should be proud of the flying that you have been doing, it's because of your efforts that we are in 1st place. Keep up the good work!

- With only two more regular rounds to go until the playoffs, I thought I'd put in a little reminder on what we can expect. Here's an excerpt from Tod's SSL Rulebook :

* At the end of the Regular Season eight top Squadrons will qualify to the Playoffs.

* There will be three rounds of the Playoffs. Seeding will be regular season 1st vs. 8th, 2nd vs. 7th, 3rd vs. 6th and 4th vs. 5th. Second round, 1v8 winner would face 4v5 winner, 2v7 vs. 3v6 winner. Winners of the second-round pairing would compete in the final round for the league championship.

* In each Playoff round, higher-seeded squadrons will receive a 5 percent score bonus. This is considered to be a reward for good Regular Season performance.

Playoff's are right around the corner, so be ready!

Misc.
--------

- We had some good, solid activity this week. Let's keep it up!

- CMDR's Product Spotlight : I recently picked up the new album from 'Weird Al' Yankovic, "Poodle Hat". I love it, but I also realize that this stuff is kind of an acquired taste. If you like parodies or are already a fan of Al ... or if you just need a good laugh ... then do yourself a favor and go get it. It's worth it just to hear "Ebay", a parody of something or other that the Backstreet Boys sang.

- CMDR's Product Rant : A relative of mine recently bought a new Hewlett Packard computer, and since I'm the only guy in my family that knows what makes a computer tick, I've become their personal tech support guy while they try to figure it out. I was extremely surprised (and a bit distressed) to discover that HP computers DO NOT come with any software CDs. In fact, if you want to have any backups of your OS, the HP manual tells you to run some sort of "HP Recovery CD Maker". YOU have to supply 6 blank CDs while this program burns you a crappy backup set which will only return your hard drive to the condition it was in when it left the factory. Need to reinstall ONE application? Well good luck, because you're probably going to have to format and reinstall the whole thing.
Anyway, I've never been a fan of buying computers from any of the "big" computer manufacturers ... I'd much rather just build one from scratch. But if you are thinking about buying a computer, then take my advice and stay away from HP. These jokers include the cost of software in the purchase price, but then DON'T give you the software CDs. In my humble opinion, that's a rip off.

Okay, that should just about do it for this week. Until next time -- fly high and watch your six!
