Section 5: The Retreat

The retreat is simply the outbound vector where you loop back around for another run. The retreat is best described as a combination of the attack and the break. An ideal retreat is one that allows you to fly without having to input any control changes. Against some targets, you may need to fly evasive as you retreat. When flying an evasive maneuver, it is best that it be a consistent maneuver, as you are flying against a "computer-controlled" defense that will not "anticipate" or lead. A simple, yet effective maneuver is the "barrel-roll". To execute a "barrel-roll", provide positive elevational input and axial input to either the left or the right. That is, pull back, and roll to either the left or right. Hold these inputs and you will execute a "barrel-roll". When executing a "barrel-roll" during retreat, you need to maintain full back-pressure on the stick, as it is that input which will keep you ahead of the defensive systems.

The retreat is to be flown until you are far enough out that you are comfortable with swinging around and going back in. You may initially want to fly out until two (2) or more klicks before setting up for your next run. As you settle in on your target, you will want to decrease your range to just under 1.8 klicks, as this will set you up for your next run.

If you find that you are intercepting defensive fire, you may want to set your shields aft.
