Extended Universe List of Mandalores

This list describes each Mand’alor based on the action they did to be named Mandalore. Each one was called Mandalore followed by a nickname that we have put into quotation marks down below. Please take note that there are some on this list that either have not been able to be identified due to lack of information or simply ceased the tradition of renaming themselves.

“The First,” sometime before 7000 years BBY

The mythical figure who began the very concept of leadership with the originating species of Mandalorians, the Taung. Mandalore The First created the title before the culture even called themselves Mandalorians. “The First” led his people off of Coruscant, where the Taungs originated, to a planet called Roon, which would be famously named Mandalore afterwards. When the relocation happened the Taung species renamed themselves The Mando’ade, or “sons and daughters of Mandalore”. Mandalore The First was also known for his hunt to exterminate the legendary beast, the Mythosaur.

“The Conqueror,” sometime between 7000 BBY and 3996 BBY.

The Conqueror followed the tradition that was set by The First. Taking the Mask of Mandalore, which was created by carving the bones of a Mythosaur, he led his people in the start of a grand series of military campaigns throughout the Outer Rim of the galaxy. Mandalore The Conqueror was the very reason for the Mandalorian Crusades that expanded their territories and made themselves known to the Old Republic, specifically the Jedi Knight Revan.

“The Indomitable”

Mandalore The Indomitable was a male Taung that continued the Mandalorian Crusades and made an alliance that would lead to many more conflicts against the Old Republic. The Indomitable was the Mandalore that allied himself and his Crusaders to the Sith Lord Ulric Qel-Droma and to help his cause to defeat the Jedi Order. The Indomitable, after a plot that saw Qel-Droma captured and rescued with the aid of Sith Lord Exar Kun, then began what was a pivotal moment in Mandalorian History. The Battle of Onderon would see the Mandalorian Crusaders ultimately defeated by Republic forces and the Beast Riders of Onderon. This would make The Indomitable retreat to Onderon’s jungle moon of Dxun, only to be slain by the creatures native to the moon. The Mask of Mandalore at that point would be recovered by one of The Indomitable’s Taung soldiers, who would be declared one of the most famous of all Mandalores.

“The Ultimate”

The Ultimate is one of the most famous Mandalorians in their culture’s history. One of the last few remaining Taung soldiers of what had become an endangered species, Mandalore The Ultimate led the pivotal moment where Mandalorians were no longer just one species but many, and was also the reason they are feared to this day as great warriors. No one could ever truly identify who The Ultimate’s true identity ever was, some even doubted he was a soldier under the direct command of the previous Mandalore “The Indomitable,” but all at the time feared his ability to conquer worlds and lead a new sect that was growing on the planet Mandalore, the Neo-Crusaders. It was this movement that brought on any species to join the Mandalorians as equals to the dwindling Taungs that originated the culture.

For two decades Mandalore The Ultimate and his Neo-Crusaders began the Mandalorian Wars and captured many worlds in the Outer Rim and even settlements under Republic rule. The Ultimate had one reason to wage such a devastating war, to lift his people from the betrayals and humiliation that plagued them from the Great Sith War and prevent the extinction of their warrior culture. Mandalore saw this war as the greatest attempt to bring honor to his people. It would sadly not end in victory.

With the entry of a rogue faction of Jedi, led by Jedi Knights Revan and Alek (who later took on the mantle of Darth Malak), The Ultimate’s eventual defeat at the hands of Revan himself was inevitable. After Revan slayed The Ultimate, in an attempt to keep from Mandalorians in waging a galactic war again, Revan took the Mask of Mandalore and kept it hidden from the warrior clans. Without a means of choosing a new leader and left without direction, the eventual end of the Neo-Crusader movement led the Mandalorian people to become what they are most known to be to this day as Bounty Hunters and Mercenaries. While this end is not what The Ultimate hoped for, if it wasn’t for his actions in allowing multiple species to join the warrior culture and make his people known galaxy-wide, there would have never been another Mandalorian after his time as Mand’alor.

First Unidentifiable Mandalore

After the end of the Mandalorian Wars and The Ultimate's eventual demise at the hands of Revan, there were two Mandalorians that kept their people from a complete collapse of their ways. This first unidentified Mandalore, for whom we have little to no data on his identity or past, laid out a small path to keep their culture alive by staying in the shadows of civilization. This unidentified leader, while not having the Mask of Mandalore, was the very last of the Taung species and was considered a leader in his small group of surviving Mandalorians.

It was not until around 3954 and 3951 BBY, of the Legends universe, that this Taung Mandalore met another highly famous Mandalorian mercenary who had actually been traveling with the very Jedi Knight that led to the Mandalorians defeat in the previous war and passed on the work he had started in preserving their culture.

“The Preserver”

While not living up to the great Mandalores before him, The Preserver’s work in reuniting the Mandalorian Clans after their defeat in the Mandalorian Wars was instrumental in keeping the warrior culture alive and strong. The Preserver, whose real name is Canderous Ordo, was the very Mandalorian mercenary that traveled with the Jedi Revan, after Malak’s betrayal, in saving an already fractured Republic. Revan, after his memories returned to him, gave the location where he hid the Mask of Mandalore so that he may use it to reunite the warrior people against a growing shadow looming over the Republic. The Preserver did just that, starting his movement on the very jungle moon of Dxun where Mandalorian history was at its peak and continued to grow the Mandalorians back to their former glory. There is unfortunately no data as to the fate of Mandalore The Preserver, although we do know that it would be a long time after his death (natural or otherwise) until a new Mandalore was chosen.

“The Lesser”

Centuries had passed by now and the Mandalorians clans had been without a Mandalore to lead them. The Sith Empire had returned from their exile and once again wished to use the Mandalorians for their new war effort against the Republic. While few did take up mercenary work, the majority of Mandalorians declined the recruitment efforts. The work of previous Mandalores was holding well for a time. The Sith Empire however would not cease and instead singled out a very successful Mandalorian gladiator in the arenas of Geonosis. While his successes were questionable, due to interference from Sith Imperial Intelligence, the crowds began to call the gladiator Mand’alor.

The proud warrior claimed the title, even though the Mask of Mandalore had faded into history, and Mandalore The Lesser began his rule over the Mandalorians. He rallied a new Mandalorian Army from across the galaxy with the promise of challenging one of the natural enemies of the Mandalorians, the Jedi Order. The Lesser during the later years of his life initiated a galactic-scale competition in an effort to rejuvenate and restore the Mandalorian Clans’ faith in him, after a major defeat against the Republic, calling it The Great Hunt. Over time it became less exclusive to just Mandalorians, but one of its champions would arise from this competition to defeat Mandalore The Lesser and take the title of Mand’alor. Artus Lok, of Clan Lok, would kill The Lesser and proclaim himself the next Mandalore.

“The Vindicated”

Artus Lok, Mandalore the Vindicated, after becoming the grand champion of The Great Hunt and killing the previous Mandalore would take his place as the next sole leader of the Mandalorians. His reign would not come without burdens as there was a split of ideologies within the Mandalorian people. The Vindicated wanted to ensure the Clans to stay as cautious and well-paid allies of the Sith Empire, rather than side with Jilcoln Cadera, a Mandalorian of Clan Cadera, who had favored the long followed path of Mandalore The Preserver and wanted the Clans to return to the Republic’s side. Eventually The Vindicated, with the help of another up-and-coming Great Hunt champion, secured his reign as Mandalore and continued to aid The Sith Empire in the Great Galactic War. However, during an attack by a third major faction, The Eternal Empire, in which he protected his kinsmen from a swarm of skytrooper droids, he was ultimately defeated.

“The Avenger”

Shae Vizsla of Clan Vizsla was next to become Mandalore after The Vindicated’s heroic death. Although she was reluctant to receive the title, she would be called Mandalore The Avenger in an effort to have the Mandalorian Clans defeat The Eternal Empire of Zakuul. Eventually they, along with their allies, achieved the victory they hoped for and the Clans profited well after pillaging the Zakuulan advanced weapons and technologies.

After the war was over, The Avenger continued her reign as Mand’alor and led her people in rebuilding efforts of not only their own worlds, but that of the entire Galaxy which was wrecked by war. This would however begin a long string of inner conflicts during her reign. When the Third Galactic War broke out, surviving members of Clan Lok and other like-minded Mandalorians grew dissatisfied with her leadership and chose to splinter away from the other Clans. The Avenger would eventually see those that abandoned the Clans brought to justice and strip them of their armor, to clean the stain of honor they brought upon their previous Mandalore. This would not be the end of her problems, however.

A secret renegade group calling themselves the Hidden Chain would continue to oppose The Avenger, claiming that her rule had lost sight of their Mandalorian Ways. Even clan members still loyal to her were feeling more like glorified couriers than the warrior people they once were. This sort of ideological split would continue on in the hearts and minds of the Mandalorians until the Clone Wars Era. No data follows afterwards other than her proclaiming her second in command, Jekiah Ordo of Clan Ordo, as her Arbiter, a secondary leader position, in her absence as she continued to hunt down every single member of the Hidden Chain.

“The Binder”

Mandalore The Binder was a male warrior born from a rug weaver on the Mandalorian world of Harswee, known for its luxurious loom-woven carpets. He would rise to become a Mandalore who held traditional values of the clans, yet there is very little data acquired on any notable events during his reign. He was cited by Tor Vizsla, another famous Mandalorian, in claiming that not all of the greatest of Mandalores were born or grew up on the homeworld, but from far away, and not all were chosen during times of great war and conquest. Yet he is considered to be one of the greatest Mandalores throughout their history.

“The Uniter”

The year is 1058 BBY, the New Sith Wars have already begun, and the Mandalorian mercenary Aga Awaud of Clan Awaud has decided to return to his home world of Mandalore. Hoping for a warm welcome home, he finds his clan almost in ruins as they along with many others have started to fall victim to the Candorian plague that has cut across the galaxy. This added to his home planet's entire sector becoming a lawless zone where raiders and pirates constantly attacked any ship they encountered. Not wanting any of this to stand for a moment longer, Aga Awaud sends out a call to all Mandalorians throughout the galaxy to return to the Mandalore Sector in the defense of their home. This actually rallied all the Mandalorians back home and they began to restore order to their home sector.

“The Destroyer”

The next entry of Mandalores we have is rather vague in information so please bear with us. Ranah Teh Naast who was the daughter of Uvhen Chal, was a female Mandalorian who took up the title of Mandalore The Destroyer. We do not know the time or exact locations where her most notable moment was made, but The Destroyer was known for her siege of the city of Luon. She was the one who opened the eyes to the residents of Luon and the galaxy that there is no killing off the Mandalorian people as we quote her:

“We're not huddled in one place — we span the galaxy. We need no lords or leaders — so you can't destroy our command. We can live without technology — so we can fight with our bare hands. We have no species or bloodline — so we can rebuild our ranks with others who want to join us. We're more than just a people or an army. We're a culture. We're an idea. And you can't kill ideas — but we certainly can kill you.”
- Mandalore The Destroyer addressing the Consul of Luon.

No further data is present on her events.

“The Hammerborn”

Mandalore The Hammerborn is another on our list with little to no data on notable events in their life. All we can gather is that The Hammerborn was a Mandalorian warrior who grew up in the alleys of Kol Atorn. He lived with many other Mandalorian exiles and emigrants who settled there. The only noteworthy event in this Mandalore’s life was that he learned the language of their people, The Mando’a, from the very exiles he lived with.

Second Unidentifiable Mandalore

The second and final unidentifiable Mandalore in our list had his reign around 200 BBY, which puts him around 168 years before the Battle of Naboo against the Trade Federation. This Mandalore, while we don’t know his name, was responsible for the defeat and genocide of the Ithullans on the planet of Mandallia over a Narcolethe distillery. Despite this act, The Jedi Council at that time did nothing to seek justice over the genocide of an entire species.

Jaster Mereel

A native to the planet of Concord Dawn and a member of the Protectors, Jaster Mereel is another pivotal member in the long line of Mand’alors. Starting off as just a soldier with a strong sense of morals, he was driven to kill a corrupt officer and was banished from his own home. He later joined the Mandalorians and fought his way through the ranks, as he was dissatisfied with the decline of ethics among members of the warrior culture. He became Mand’alor after defeating Tor Vizsla and started to change the perception of Mandalorian culture as just “barbaric” warriors.

It was at this point the ideological split that started centuries ago finally showed up again and began reviving the internal conflicts within the Clans. Mereel created and issued the Supercommando Codex to all Mandalorians that would uphold the new values and tenets. This however was not adopted by all, and a group of Mandalorians who follow the pacifist ideology, New Mandalorians, opposed the Supercommando faction, now being called the True Mandalorians, and their beliefs of staying as a mercenary people. The list of Mereel’s enemies wouldn’t stop here, as after Tor Vizsla’s humiliating defeat created the Death Watch faction who followed the old ways that were considered to be too barbaric to the other two factions.

With the True Mandalorians and Death Watch at each other's throats over the planet of Concord Dawn, Jaster along with his now surrogate son Jango Fett continued to aid the Korda Defense Force. In a contracted excursion to Korda Six, Mereel and Fett along with Mereel’s second-in-command Montross were ambushed by Death Watch led by Tor Vizsla himself. Montross decided to use this opportunity to abandon his superior officer and use his escape as a means of usurping the Mandalore title. Jango Fett had made his way to his surrogate father too late, and Jaster Mereel died in Jango’s arms.

Jango Fett

Jango Fett is the son of a former Journeyman Protector from the planet of Concord Dawn, from the same faction of soldiers his surrogate father grew up with. When the civil war between the True Mandalorians and Death Watch factions spilled over to his home planet, his life of peaceful farming was entirely changed. Fett’s entire family was destroyed by the leader of Death Watch, Tor Vizsla, yet he survived the actions of the previous Mand’alor, his surrogate father Jaster Mereel.

He grew up and trained under his father, in the ways of the True Mandalorians Supercommando Codex, until the day that his father was killed on Korda VI. From that point forward, Jango took the role of Mandalore and led his soldiers in the remaining days of the Mandalorian Civil War. He had been doing an outstanding job, up until he and his group were hired to resist a political uprising on Galidraan. The Governor was in league with Death Watch in secret and collaborated in deceiving the Jedi Council by stopping a “Mandalorian-initiated massacre” with Death Watch providing the body count for the deception.

The Jedi did end up attacking the True Mandalorians. The battle was fierce and while Jango managed to kill six Jedi alone with his bare hands while fighting along with others using the many weapons of a Mandalorian, he was ultimately captured and the only True Mandalorian left alive. He was then sold into slavery by the Governor of Galidraan. He would eventually escape after the spice transport he was aboard was attacked by pirates.

After reclaiming his armor that was stolen by the governor, Jango started to hunt for Tor Vizsla to exact revenge on him. He eventually was able to find and seriously wound Tor, and left him for dead, food for the Corellia native dire-cats. With Vizsla dead, Jango decided against continuing to try to find a way to revive the True Mandalorians, and continued to live as a bounty hunter, until his fateful encounter with Count Dooku.

Pre Vizsla

Pre Vizsla is a Human Mandalorian who led the splinter faction Death Watch during the Clone War Era. The death of the previous Mandalore, Jango Fett, at the hands of Jedi Master Mace Windu began the Vizsla’s campaign to overthrow the New Mandalorians in an attempt to restore the cultural ways of Mandalorians of old. Duchess Satine was nothing but an insult to him when it came to anything Mandalorian.

In the public eye, Pre Vizsla was governor of Concordia, the moon of Mandalore, and used this as a cover for his true identity. He even went so far as to create an alliance with Count Dooku and his Confederacy of Independent Systems, despite Dooku’s distaste for Death Watch from his experience with Tor Vizsla. He then began coordinating attacks on key Republic targets and staging a terrorist attack at a memorial shrine in the New Mandalorian capital of Sundari.

Pre Vizsla was also the latest, at the time, wielder of the legendary Darksaber. His revealing the saber would be instrumental to Mandalorian culture from this point on as the saber was used to determine who would be the secret Mandalore of Death Watch, ultimately evolving into what it is seen now as the key tool to claim for the title of Mand’alor. In the final months of his reign, he would break the alliance with the CIS and eventually form an alliance with the Shadow Collective which was under the control of the former Sith Lord, Maul. Using them as an “invasion force” against the New Mandalorians, Pre Vizsla and Death Watch would come in as the heroes which would lead to Vizsla imprisoning Duchess Satine and at last claiming the title publicly as Mand’alor.

This would be short-lived, as Maul would challenge him in a duel for leadership of Death Watch and the throne. Vizsla accepted this challenge and, using the Darksaber, engaged in combat with the former Sith Lord. While the battle was hard fought, ultimately Maul proved the better warrior with his previous training. Maul took the Darksaber and beheaded Pre Vizsla in front of the other members to show himself as victorious. Several members of Death Watch would not agree to this and fled.

Editor's Note: While the legend of Pre Vizsla is seen in both Canon and Legends continuity, we will be continuing with the Legends list for now as technically the next Mandalore would be Maul. We will get back to Maul later in the course. From this point until we cover the Canon Mandalores in the following section. The next few on the legends list are purely in a different timeline.

“The Resurrector”

A clone designated as Alpha-02, who had been nicknamed by his trainers as Spar, found himself subject to the genetic memories of his host, Jango Fett, overriding the usual clone programming. Spar, who was also an Advanced Recon Commando for the clone army, wanted to stage an escape to get himself off the water world of Kamino and, with the help of a friend, managed to desert the Grand Army of the Republic before the battle of Geonosis. Spar then lived as a bounty hunter up until the news of Jango Fett’s death, which drove him to return to Mandalore and rebuild what Jango used to be part of, the Mandalorian SuperCommandos. While doing so, he met and befriended Fenn Shysa, who convinced Spar to act as Jango Fett’s heir and become the next Mand’alor. Eventually, Spar would agree and take up the mantle of Mandalore The Resurrector after winning over the New Mandalorian Faction.

When Spar took the title, he began leading the Mandalorians away from the aid of the Republic and instead went towards the side of the Separatists. The True Mandalorians at this point have been finally reformed and renamed as the Mandalorian Protectors, which Spar recruited from local police and former members of Death Watch. He led the Protectors in seizing facilities from MandalMotors, a famous Mandalorian starship manufacturer, and used them throughout the Clone Wars as a blitzkrieg-style force against the Old Republic. After a devastating defeat at Norval II, he was left shellshocked and Mandalore the Resurrector abdicated the title of Mand’alor and left it vacant until the end of the wars. He left the planet Mandalore and in his travels reached the Extrictarium Nebula, where he clashed with Ailyn Vel. Vel, the estranged daughter of Boba Fett, thought Spar was her father and killed him, and took his armor for herself.

Fenn Shysa

Fenn was a human Mandalorian born and raised on the home planet of Mandalore where in his younger days he spent his time as a constable with a childhood friend, Tobi Dala, and even became his clan's Chieftain early on. He learned early on that the marginalization his people suffered under the Old Republic needed to stop, and that a Mand’alor was needed to lead their people back to their former glory. Shysa encountered Spar, who was discussed before as Mandalore the Resurrector, and convinced him to take up the mantle. After the events that would form the legend of The Ressurector, the newly formed Galactic Empire sought to put a base of operations for the Mandalorian sector. Shysa, already wishing to find a way to keep a cautious eye on the Empire, reluctantly inherited the title of Mand’alor in preparation to fight back Imperial authority should they become ‘unfriendly’ to Mandalore’s cause.

Shysa’s fears eventually came to pass as the Empire had developed an iron grip on the sector. Enslaving large numbers of Mandalorians and strip mining the world for the most important resource it has, Beskar ore. Shysa started his plan to begin guerrilla warfare against the Empire, freeing up the slaves to join the fight as well as obtaining weapons and armor, forming a newer and covert Mandalorian Protector army. This went on for years, until 3 ABY when his friend Tobi Dala sacrificed his life to destroy the Imperial base of operations. This also killed the Imperial overseer and allowed a great many slaves to regain their freedom. Despite the devastating loss of his friend, Shysa pressed on, using the momentum Tobi created, to revitalize Mandalore and forcefully remove the Empire from Mandalorian space.

Under Shysa’s leadership, the Mandalorian people flourished. It would however become bittersweet as the past would catch up. A Kaminoan cloner by the name of Taun We contracted the infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett to kill the last Mandalorian Protector that was responsible for an attack on Kamino, years prior to the Empire. Shysa was indeed part of that while helping Mandalore the Ressurector, and was the last target for Boba. They met up on the planet Shogun where both were attacked by the Sevvets. Fenn Shysa was mortally wounded while saving Fett’s life, but came to believe that the Fett name had the strength to it ever since Jango’s death. Shysa asked Boba Fett to become the next Mand’alor upon his death, to which Boba agreed, and was mercy-killed to spare him the horrendous fate the Sevvets would have done.

Boba Fett

The clone son of the infamous Jango Fett, Boba Fett has become the poster child of Mandalorians in Star Wars canon since its creation. In his childhood, he had only started to learn the ways of his people when Jango was killed in the first battle of Geonosis during the start of the Clone Wars. From then on Boba only had a holobook Jango had left him and his grandfather’s, Jaster Mereel, Supercommando Codex to guide him in becoming a bounty hunter like his father before him. At the age of sixteen, Boba met another bounty hunter by the name of Sintas Vel, who later became his wife and the mother of Boba’s daughter, Ailyn. He made a comfortable life for all three of them working as a Journeyman Protector until an incident with Fett’s superior officer split the family. His relationship with his family fractured to the point where he divorced his wife and left his daughter.

Boba’s return to Mandalorian life would come in the form of his fateful meeting with Fenn Shysa and hunting him down as a bounty hunter contract. Ultimately honoring Shysa’s dying wish, Boba Fett became Mand’alor, adding another member of the Fett Clan to the list of Mandalores. Fett’s rule as Mand’alor wasn’t easy, as it was during the time of the dreaded Yuuzhan Vong’s invasion of their galaxy. The Vong invited the Mandalorians to serve them during their invasion, and as a ruse to feed the New Republic intel on the Vong, Boba agreed on the condition that Mandalorian space would not be invaded. Eventually, the Yuuzhan Vong realized Boba’s deceit and attacked Mandalore with the intent of making the Mandalorians extinct. Their attack failed, and while the Mandalorians suffered great losses, Fett took this opportunity to lead the Mandalorian Protectors to openly oppose the Yuuzhan Vong and fight them throughout the galaxy.

When the war was over, and the Vong defeated, Boba became heavily involved with rebuilding Mandalore and recalling two million Mandalorians from around the galaxy back home to boost the dwindling population. The Mandalorians discovered a new lode of Beskar ore, which greatly boosted their economy. Boba would then go on as one of the most influential Mandalores, especially during the galactic crisis of the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion.

Chernan Ordo

Chernan Ordo was a Mandalorian during the year 127 ABY and was the Mand’alor during the Sith-Imperial War. During that year on the planet of Botajef, the Mandalorians were contracted by the Galactic Alliance to defend the planet from Roan Fel’s Galactic Empire. Chernan led his troops in holding out against the onslaught, until he was killed by another Mandalorian, Yaga Auchs. Yaga was a subordinate of Chernan’s until the betrayal, where the Mand’alor was killed and Auchs took the title for his own.

Yaga Auchs

Yaga was, as stated above, a subordinate of the previous Mand’alor aiding in the defense against the Fel Empire. Yaga began his betrayal of his former leader to take the title of Mandalore by serving a mysterious leader of his own. This leader wanted to keep the Mandalorians out of the war entirely, becoming isolated on the planet of Mandalore. The leader Yaga served to this day remains unknown, but his intentions to keep the Mandalorians out of the war to give the Fel Empire an advantage was clear. Yaga Auchs would keep the Mandalorians out of the later half of the war as Mand’alor, but not unchallenged as another Mandalorian by the name of Hondo Karr knew of Yaga’s betrayal and would fight to bring Yaga Auchs to justice by any means necessary.
