Section 2: Squad Support Weapons

Squad support weapons can take two basic forms, anti-personnel and anti-vehicle. A few weapons can fill both rolls, but those are usually multiple payload devices. The point of a squad support weapon is to move along with each squad, enabling them to have heavy firepower with them. A squad support weapon must take little to no time to assemble into a fully operational weapon, able to bring down fire on enemy positions. Every fire team in the Hammer’s Fist should carry at least one squad support weapon.

BlasTech T-21 Light Repeating Rifle

T-21 Light Repeating Rifle

Significantly more powerful than the standard blaster rifle, the BlasTech T-21 light repeating blaster is the most deadly Imperial blaster that can be transported and fired by one soldier. The T-21 proved a common support weapon for army and stormtrooper squads. Imperial artillery sections normally include at least one soldier with a T-21 who will provide cover for other crewmen while they are setting up artillery pieces and heavy repeating blasters such as the E-Web. Because of its portability, the T-21 also proved to be a popular weapon among Rebel squads during the Civil War and is still issued to some New Republic units.

While medium and heavy repeating blasters provide significantly more firepower than does the T-21, they are also bulkier and require crews of two to three soldiers. They take several minutes to set up or break down, and far too often military units don't have the luxury of waiting around for heavy support weapons.

By contrast the T-21 package is designed for use by a soldier on the move. The weapon, its belt-carried tripod, and the twenty-kilogram backpack generator can be set up and made operational in less than thirty seconds. While the blaster can be fired two-handed by a moving soldier, the light tripod offers improved accuracy. The tripod can be fully extended for instances when the T-21 is to be used as a weapon emplacement but a partially extended position is superb for sniper attacks, allowing the gunner to take advantage of the T-21's maximum range of three hundred meters. Rebel squads often used the T-21, which has an optimum range of one hundred and fifty meters, to eliminate Imperial weapon emplacements and cover advancing Alliance infantry.

The T-21 is capable of being powered by a power pack, but it only contains enough energy for 25 shots. However, use of the backpack generator provides near unlimited ammunition, but its firing rate is limited to one shot per second due to the generator's low cooling capacity.

The power behind the T-21's blaster bolts is amazing, being known to penetrate infantry armor, personal force fields and even armor plating of light combat vehicles. Some units have used a larger power generator to increase the T-21's rate of fire to full autofire, but doing so requires a second crew member to maintain the generator. Sustained autofire has been known to melt the barrel of the T-21 due to heat buildup, so short and controlled bursts are suggested in those situations.

BlasTech A280 Heavy Rifle

A280 Heavy Rifle

The BlasTech A280 Blaster Rifle is reported to be the best armor-piercing rifle available. Evidence has shown that it is capable of splitting a fully-armored Imperial stormtrooper nearly in half at only medium range. As a squad support weapon, it follows the opposite philosophy from the T-21. Instead of being able to fire quickly, the A280 is a slower weapon that trades speed for incredible power. Able to be used efficiently by a single trooper, the A280 can be a better choice then the T-21 for fast moving combat, especially that which takes place in urban settings.

Many troopers not familiar with the specifics of BlasTech weapons often confuse the A280 with its smaller cousin the A295. The A295 was used as the standard issue longarm at Echo Base on Hoth, and the Rebels fostered the rumor that they had acquired the more powerful A280 to affect the morale of Imperial troops. It wasn't until a BlasTech employee defected just prior to the Battle of Endor that the Rebellion got it's hands on A280's. The A280 is 69.4 cm long and weighs 4.7 kilograms. The power pack is housed in front of the trigger and holds enough energy for 50 shots. The standard rifle is capable of having a sight attached on top.

Golan Arms FC1 Flechette Launcher

FC1 Flechette Launcher

The FC1 is a barely portable, shoulder-fired weapon that expels canisters of razor-sharp micro-darts. Each canister explodes at a predetermined distance from a selected target for maximum effect. The weapon can fire both antipersonnel canisters and antivehicle canisters, and has four barrels. The scope on the launcher can program the detonation range of up to ten meters from the target for maximum damage. The FC1 holds four canister tubes each with a single canister, and has a reserve chamber for two additional canisters. The standard antipersonal canister is a small globe that releases hundreds of flechettes over a ten-meter-diameter, which means a well placed shot can eliminate an entire squad of troopers. Most antivehicle rounds consist of eleven-centimeter-long missiles, and can be exploded five meters from the target. The cloud of antivehicle rounds can rip through ten centimeters of durasteel armor plating at very close range, but at optimal range this is reduced to four centimeters, eventually becoming just 7.5 millimeters at maximum range. Both antipersonnel and antivehicle canisters may be loaded in a weapon at the same time and used as the need arises.

Golan Arms is not known for its innovative designs, and the FC1 reflects some earlier, more powerful fixed artillery pieces designed before the rise of the Empire. Golan Arms threw in with the Rebel Alliance (losing half of its factories to the Empire in the process) and provided the Rebels with these launchers.

Merr Sonn PLX-4 Missile System

PLX-4 Missile System

Armed with a portable missile launcher, a single infantryman can transform into a piece of mobile artillery, capable of taking out enemy armored vehicles and fortifications while still only presenting a small and agile target for return fire. Merr-Sonn Munitions supplied the standard portable missile tube for both the clone troopers of the Clone Wars, and the Hammer's Fist stormtroopers of today. The Merr-Sonn PLX series (or the "Plex," as it is called) of combination missile and rocket launcher quickly became the standard-issue weapon for rapid, high-powered response. The original edition that debuted in the Clone Wars, the PLX-1, could deliver explosive payloads capable of destroying a Trade Federation AAT.

The PLX-4 is an over-the-shoulder device operated by one person, but unlike other PLX systems, it can also be fired from a tripod for greater accuracy. It fires "dumb" rockets in a line-of-sight attack, smart GAM (gravity-activated mode) guided missiles, and the newest Savant guided missile that has improved targeting software and agility over the GAM payload. GAM mode gives the missile a "target" lock range of 25-500/1/2 km, with the Savant being roughly double those figures. The Plex chambers one projectile, and holds a second in reserve.

A trooper selects the guided missile tracking mode with the push of a firing stud on the launcher housing. The two modes are EPR, which homes in on intense infrared sources such as vehicle exhaust, and GAM, which targets repulsorlift signatures coupled with specific vehicle silhouettes. A GAM missile can pursue a target for 40 kilometers before its fuel expires.

During the height of the Galactic Civil War, the PLX-2 and PLX-2M were replaced with the improved PLX-4, refining the launcher with lighter materials, a built-in micro repulsorlift stabilizing unit that acts as an "invisible tripod," and belt-worn firing triggers. The PLX-4 has a larger missile cartridge, allowing an Imperial trooper to carry eight Arakyd 3t3 missiles or other specific payloads.
