Pete takes test drive (Continued from “Tifosi...
in Space!") “TIE
Maverick, huh? You must have dug up my original call sign…” said Pete. “I did look
back into your historic file for inspiration…” replied VA Hav Antiel, the
designer of Pete’s new fighter. “Well is it
ready for a test flight?” “Sure, you
can fly it back to the Challenge!” “And it won’t
explode on me or anything?” “Ummm…no, no it shouldn’t.
No that won’t be a problem anymore…” Hav said while looking a bit off
to Pete’s left. “Shouldn’t…anymore? Maybe I should let you guys test this out a
bit more…” “No, it’s
great, it’s ready!” “Alright,
It can’t be too bad, can it? I’ll take
her back to the challenge. In the
cockpit of his new TIE, Pete looked around and checked everything out. Hav really wasn’t kidding about the same
controls. Pete noticed the flight stick
was perfectly worn to match his hand.
It must have been salvaged from his Guardian as well. Pete fired everything up and tested the
systems. Pete opened
a radio channel to the yellow Muurian Transport
from where Hav was watching. “OK,
systems check out. Here I go…” Pete eased
the Maverick out of the hangar with gentle control inputs. It didn’t take
much at all to make it respond. The
controls were just as intuitive as his TIE Guardian. He linked up the laser and ion cannons, did
a quick Immelmann roll and fired a volley at a small asteroid, vaporizing
it. “I love the extra firepower, and
speed! I’ll see you back at the fleet,
Hav.” Pete
continued on and jumped into hyperspace. Pete exited
hyperspace within view of the ISDII Challenge, happy he made it without any
issues, when his sub-light engines sputtered and stopped… Pete
checked his displays and attempted a restart.
He got a couple sputters, and nothing.
One more attempt lead to a squeal and sharp bang. He was starting to smell some smoke. “ISD
Challenge, this is Tex. A little help,
please? My new TIE does not appear to
be as reliable as advertised” Pete felt a
slight vibration as the tractor beam grabbed his fighter and pulled it into
the Hangar. |
