ISDII WARRIOR REPORT #35

REPORTING OFFICER: Vice Admiral Hav Antiel, Commodore
DATE SUBMITTED: 9 June 2019

COMMODORE'S SHORT FICTION: 'Tifosi... in Space!'

The TIE Corps Commander, Fleet Admiral Pete Mitchell, was still recovering from the crash that had destroyed his beloved TIE Guardian. The Warrior's commodore, Vice Admiral Hav Antiel, had invited FA Mitchell to the Warrior under mysterious circumstances. Given Hav's predilection for creating 'Frankenstein' craft with leftover TIE components, Pete was confident that Hav was planning to show off his proposed replacement for the destroyed Guardian.

The Warrior's hangar was empty.

“A smaller welcoming committee than normal,' Pete laughed.

“You were never one for formality anyway,' said Hav as he led the TCCOM to a corner of the hangar which was cordoned off with temporary walls and a few guards.

Pete craned his neck. “What have you got here?”

“Step inside.”

Pete walked through the canvas door flap and couldn’t believe his eyes.

A bright yellow Muurian Transport sat covered in sponsor decals and racing stripes. Pete tried hard not to laugh.

'This, uh... this is my new ship?' asked Pete.

Hav sighed and placed an uneasy hand on Pete's shoulder.

'I'm afraid not, Pete. This is just our secret transport.'

'Secret? It's neon yellow!'

Hav grimaced. 'Yeah, I know. It'll make sense when we get there.'

'Wait,' said Pete. 'This requires yet another flight?'

Hav nodded.

'Any chance I could take the controls at least?' Pete jerked a thumb toward the Muurian Transport.

'Not on your life,' said Hav. 'The guys who lent this wouldn't be very happy. Plus I'm pretty sure MAJ Murdock wouldn't be thrilled to hear that you're flying against doctor's orders.'

*****

The sponsor-clad Muurian Transport pulled out of hyperspace, and Pete tried to ignore his aching leg. He looked over at the ship's pilots and the sponsor patches covering their flight suits.

'I hate flying when I'm not the pilot,' said Pete. 'Even if my chauffeurs are racers.'

'Oh, them?' asked Hav. 'They're not racers. They're mechanics. Well, they're more than just that. But they're not racers.' He looked out the viewport as a matching yellow escort carrier came into view. 'Good. We're almost there. Now remember, we're just regular dudes, not Emperor's Hammer TIE Corps dudes. Got it?'

Pete's brows furrowed. 'You still didn't explain who these guys are.'

'Yeah, I thought it would be cooler that way,' said Hav. Pete frowned. 'But, uh, I guess not. Well, my uncle sponsors this racing team from Dosuun. They're really good, and they owe him a favor. And since Plif doesn't want me building my creations on the Warrior anymore, I figured I could call on these guys to build your new ship. Based on my designs, of course.'

As the transport entered the hangar, Pete spotted nearly a dozen yellow racing ships in various stages of repair. They looked sleek and fast, but they struck Pete as being closer to Rebel designs than his preferred TIE variants. Plus they were all the same revolting shade of neon yellow, and Pete wasn't thrilled about flying a ship emblazoned with energy drink logos.

The transport landed and the hatch opened with a soft hiss. 'Uscita,' shouted one of the pilots, motioning Pete and Hav through the hatch.

The hangar was loud and well lit. Mechanics were hammering, welding, and grinding away on the racing ships. Advisers with complex multi-display readouts were barking orders over the din. A crewman nearby was meticulously tweaking a small spanner in a panel on the side of a racer. Aside from Pete and Hav, everyone was wearing noise-reducing headsets. It seemed to be a controlled chaos, despite the noise.

'I know what you're thinking,' said Hav. 'And no, you're not going to have to fly the livrea gialla.'

'The what?' said Pete.

'Just follow me,' said Hav.

They moved deeper into the hangar and through a hallway constructed of sponsor-clad boards featuring pictures of the racers, arms folded and grimacing. As they passed a debriefing room filled with digital graphs, a small, hairy woman in a neon yellow jumpsuit harrumphed and closed the door. Hav led them to another door where a tall man in a crisp dress shirt and yellow tie was holding a datapad and pressing his headset's microphone to his mouth. 'Sono arrivati,' he said and then greeted them in Basic.

'Welcome, welcome,' he said, waving an arm as the door opened from inside.

Pete and Hav stepped into a large, dark room as blades of blue light scattered, casting beams on a ship in the shadows.

'Is this a presentation?' asked Pete. Hav smiled. 'Looks like it,' he said. The man with the yellow tie elbowed Hav, shushing him.

Bass-heavy techno music thumped as a ring of white light slowly illuminated the base of the mysterious ship. Above the music, a deep voice boomed.

'Saluti Pete Mitchell. Questo è... il Mavericci!'

Strobe lights flashed as the music intensified and confetti shot from cannons around the ship. Pete shielded his eyes and yelled to Hav, 'Are these guys speaking Italian?'

'Uh, no,' yelled Hav over the music. 'It's, like... space Italian.'

Finally, the ambient light increased enough for Pete to get a good look at the ship. It had the cockpit and elongated fuselage of a TIE Defender, but the three sets of wing panels were raked forward. The wing panels themselves were also different: long and pointy in the front and small and tapered in the back. And it wasn't yellow. Pete had to admit that it looked pretty cool.

'So what's the story with this ship?' asked Pete.

Hav smiled. 'Pretty cool, right? You'll be happy to know that a lot of the parts came from your TIE Guardian. We tried to salvage as much as we could and replace or improve the rest. The wings of your Guardian were destroyed in the crash. These are modified wing panels from TIE Interceptors. We angled them down to give you better laser convergence. Also, you can see them from the cockpit now, so maybe you won't crash into my Star Destroyer again.' Hav smiled and nudged Pete.

'It's got the same basic configuration as you TIE Guardian. Same engines, same controls. We've added a few more cannons. Well, shoot, here. Take a look for yourself.'

Hav grabbed the yellow-tie-guy's datapad and showed Pete a list of specs:

  • Powerplant: SFS I-s4d solar ionization reactor
  • Maximum acceleration: 4,240 G
  • MGLT: 190
  • Maximum atmospheric speed: 1,780 km/h
  • Shielding: Forward/Rear projecting Novaldex deflector shield generators (rated 120 SBD)
  • Titanium hull with Quadanium steel solar panels (rated 20 RU)
  • SFS L-s9.3 laser cannons (6)
  • Borstel NK-3 medium ion cannons (2)
  • Advanced warhead launchers (2)
  • Standard load: 20 advanced concussion missiles each
  • SFS M-g-2 general-purpose warhead launchers (2)
  • Standard load: 20 concussion missiles or 15 proton torpedoes each
  • Tractor beam projector

'Not bad,' said Pete. He looked up from the datapad at the ship. 'Not bad at all. What's it called?'

'Why, that's the TIE Maverick, sir.'
