RO Report # 0 (2001-07-20)

This report was submitted by AD Keiran Idanian

Greetings,

::salute::

***NEW RO SITE!***

This is a big day! After many, many, many hours of work, by CA:RO Fondor, the new RO site is up! You can find it at www.eh.ro. That's right, eh.ro! :) I'm really pleased with the site as well as the URL! :) Fondor has many new things coming from this site, so check back soon!

***CA:RO Fondor Awarded Gold Star***

For the creation of the new RO office and EH-RORC, I would like to award my CA, Fondor the Gold Star! He has spent countless hours working on those sites. I really think the new website looks great also, it has a really cool URL! :) This is a small award for all the work he put in, but I think that it's something. :) Congratulations!

***CA:RO Fondor's Report***

::SALUTE::

I am still working out the details of the Reconnaissance Office domain. It can be found at either http://eh.ro or www.eh.ro. Soon there will be free mail accounts *@eh.ro and hosting *.eh.ro!

***Project Expansion***
**The EH vs NRN and Avenger Squadron vs Red Squadron wars is now under the command of COO WetWilly. Below is the most current information that I know of. Hopefully, I'll be kept up-to-date with the wars, if I am I'll continue to post some information. I hope that the wars will be a big success, but I already know that they will be. :)
This will be my last report with this information...

NRN:

The following rules have been agreed on by the EH and NRN:

Rules:
Standard WoW rules--
Some of the rules don't apply to what we are doing of course but we are mainly concerned with the manor matches are played.
http://www.battlestats.com/games/xwa/war/rules/?wow181

Location:
We would like to be able to use the Zone, but we are open to using a designated mIRC room :)

Battlestats:
I am not sure how extensivly your club uses battlestats, but it is probably the best way to keep track of games. We would be more than happy to assist in getting your pilots signed up if needed. http://www.battlestats.com

Duration:
Typically we try to schedule wars for one week in place of our squadron wars, but we could probably be talked into a two week war :)

Time:
Tentative date: August 3rd - August 10th.

*Note from the RO: These rules are still being discussed. If anything changes I will let you know.

Red Squadron VS Avanger Squadron:
This rules are still preliminary, and are subject to change...

Rules:
BattleStats Rules--

Place:
IRC or The Zone--

Time:
July 28, 4 PM EST - 6 PM EST.

Duration:
This "war" will be one day, only for two to three hours in the evening.

Also, Avenger Squadron may need members. Please check with the Avenger CMDR, LC E. Tarkin, if you would like to apply. If there are not enough people in Avenger, I will fly with them for the "war" since I was once an Avenger pilot.

*More to come!

***Emperor's Hammer Interview With Greg Bear***

I have received the e-mail from Greg Bear with the interview, here it is! Enjoy!

1.) What made you want to become an author?

Not sure actually! I've been writing since I was eight years old. I love storytelling in all its forms, and it just seemed like the most interesting profession. 2.) What do you like most about being an author?

I love getting feedback from my readers. That lets me judge how successfully I've told my story, from a wide variety of reactions. I also enjoy working with professionals in publishing and elsewhere--and getting to meet the people who inspired me when I was younger, who still inspire me. Fiction is a kind of universal language, not as widespread as music, but almost--and it takes me to some amazing places even in the real world! From my writing, I've been invited to give talks in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, England, and this year, Greece. There's also a possibility I'll be getting together with the good folks at ILM this next year to do a book signing. That will be terrific fun.

3.) How did you come up with the idea for the planet of Zonama Sekot?

Zonama Sekot is loosely based on a planet I created for my novel, LEGACY. The idea of an integrated ecological mind was first proposed, in its modern form, by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis. In LEGACY (and in ROGUE PLANET) the ecological systems are closely integrated, but competitive. Some of these ideas I later expanded into a more formal and realistic theory of evolution in DARWIN'S RADIO.

4.) What are your current projects?

Next up is VITALS, the most paranoid conspiracy novel ever written. It will be published by Del Rey and HarperCollins UK in January of 2002. At the moment, I'm writing DARWIN'S CHILDREN, the sequel to DARWIN'S RADIO. There are some projects under way in Los Angeles for television and movies. but none are in production contract at the moment. Hope springs eternal!

5.) What are your hobbies, and why?

I collect books and records and movies, mostly in DVD now. I've been known to collect and build model kits, but don't have much time for building any more. I'm a history buff--particularly ancient history and the American Civil War. I'm also very fond of books about travels and voyages--I'm a member of the British Hakluyt Society, which publishes historical accounts of travels.

***Recruitment/RECON Manual***

I'm planning on having the R/R Manual transfered to the new RO site, but it maybe sometime for that. I'll let you know when it's transfered.

***Imperial Survey Corps (ISC)***

I'm including ISC information from my last report, hoping that it may spark some people's interest. In the ISC, some of your jobs is just surfing the web, which all of us do.

Written by ROA Plif (Modified by RO Keiran Idanian):

New Mission Statement for the ISC

"The Imperial Survey Corps (ISC) is to provide manpower to the Reconaissance Office in order to assist the Office's efforts in advertising and recruiting for the Emperor's Hammer. The ISC will assist the Advanced Guard in locating new clubs to open diplomatic communications with and also advertising opportunites, such as magazines, online forums, and other mediums."

Basically we'll be a big help to the AG, but not to the point where we'll be stepping on their toes. We'll let them know where they can advertise and find new clubs to open communications with, but they'll be the ones trained to act on them. We're the guys in the background as far as that goes.

Our step into the spotlight will be our news releases concering the SW Universe (fan films, fiction, etc.). In the future, we could expand our coverage to include many diverse topics, perhaps evolving into a premier news site for the EH much like FA AbsoluteK had in mind for EHNet.org but hasn't gotten to yet. This would be with his blessing, of course, when the time comes. I talk about this more later on in this message.

In case the RO needs some help with a project he's running, we leave the ISC open to do that with the last line of the new Statement.

Restructuring the ISC

In accordance with the three seperate duties described by the Mission Statement, three divisions would be created in the ISC. One would focus on the search for new clubs, the second on seeking out places to advertise the EH, and the third on producing our news articles.

Each division would be led by one member appointed as its commander, and those three division commanders would report to the ISC commander, who is appointed by the RO. The RO would maintain the ability to dismiss any ISC member for any reason, as a Command Staff member must be able to maintain the personnel in his Office as he sees fit.

Division 1 will be looking online for SW gaming clubs that the AG either hasn't talked to yet or doesn't know about yet. Once we find them, we'll grab as much information as we can and pass it to the LA. Also, Division 1 may be investigating how well the other clubs are meeting up to the agreements the AG makes with them, like link/banner exchanges. Of course, we'd also make sure we know where their main homepage is and whether or not they're still around. That'll all depend on how our talks go with the LA.

Division 2 will scour the internet for places to advertise the EH. From there, it will expand into print publications, then anywhere else we might get a word in. Unless it's just a link exchange or otherwise something simple, we'll send over the info we found to the AG, who'll write up the actual submission. As time passes, I think this one will become the most difficult.

Division 3 are our news guys, which I've been calling the Press Corps. They'll start with Star Wars fan news which will include fan movies, short stories, fan items - nothing with the main Star Wars universe. Also, many things like author or actor contacts would fall in with the Press Corps' duties. Then maybe we'll head into web and EH news, similar to what AbK has in mind for EHNet.org but never quite got running like he wanted. I've talked to AbK about it, and now that we've gotten approval I should go talk to him again. He seems to like the idea, but not in any official "we work for EHNet.org" capacity. Otherwise, Press Corps submissions will go to the EH Newsletter and the RO website.

By order of GA Ronin, the ISC will be no more than 10 members, and even that is stretching it. He wanted 3-5 before we talked him up a bit. Therefore, I'm thinking the magic number will probably be 6, as that means 2 for each division. I count as an ROA and outside that 6. We'll see what we need, though.

There would be three position levels: the division members, the three division commanders, and the ISC's commander. I tossed out the ISC XO, as I felt it was unecessary in such a small group, and division commanders may only be appointed as it becomes necessary. We're still thinking up names for the three, and ID line designations to match.

Division would remain the actual generic unit name, but I'd like to have each of them develop their own unique monicker, much like I refer to Division 3 as the Press Corps. Those would be suggested by anyone who felt suddently "enlightened" and had a good idea.

This is currently all the information we have to give about the ISC, if you would be interested in joining us, please e-mail Admiral Keiran Idanian stating what division you'd like to be in, and what you feel you could do for that division. I'm requesting that all people be very dedicated to the ISC - staying for atleast 4 months. Thanks!

Also, I would like to add, that after talking with LA Nashaa KamBuel the Media Commission has been created in the Advanced Guard for ISC members wishing to also be in the AG. I'm very pleased that this happened!

***Official Non-EH Site of the Week Award Prototype***

After being suggested by CA:RO Fondor, and approved by GA Ronin, Fondor has started working on a small graphic for all winners of the Non-EH Site of the Week. I know this doesn't apply to EH members, but it is something that will be good for all web sites that aren't EH related. I heard rumors that an EH Site of the Week award maybe in the works. But, those are just rumors.

Here is the prototype:

***Non-EH Site of the Week***

This week, I would like to present the Non-EH Site of the week in honor of our last interviewed author, Greg Bear, author of Rogue Planet. In this site, you can find a biography, books, a form to e-mail him, aand many other things about Mr. Bear. Enjoy!

***Name that Song!***

Ok, this week there will be a special treat! I will give a verse of one of my favorite songs and you must give me the correct name and artist. Please send your guesses to Admiral Keiran Idanian.

Stick to your guns
Ain't nobody gonna hurt you, baby
You can go for the trigger
But only if you ahve to
Aim from the heart
Some will love and some will
Curse you, baby
And you can go to war
But only if you have to
It's only if you have to
