"It isn't the killing, you know. It's the beauty of battles that I love —the choreography and the challenge of executing everything just right—and the challenge of matching your wits against a capable opponent. I guess I carry a little more Thrawn with me than I'd like to believe."

ISD:: Hammer's hangar - When Solohan isn't crashing a fighter there (From: Wookiepedia)

Alpha Squadron: Into the Abyss #3 - Hell Revisited #3

ISDII: Hammer, Forward Secondary Hangar, Auxiliary Briefing Room.
Date: 2023.03.21.0300.00.
BG I/Wing I/7th SO “Alpha” Squadron Briefing.

Two pilots approached Araujo while the rest headed towards their designated positions. Some were already in the armory receiving armament for a heavy assault. The opposition you'd find on a pirate ship can be safely assumed to be strong. But they were special forces, they were trained for this kind of job.

- "What's wrong?" Horus smirked at Araujo contemplating the preparatives as he himself checked the ammo on his rifles. Pryde was close behind Horus.

- "He feels something is missing," answered Pryde. Sometimes it is good that your local force sensitive reads your mind/emotions, whatever, and does the talking for you. In particular when you just don't want to interact. - "What he says" whispered Araujo. - "I just can't tell what is missing here"

-"Let's not fool ourselves, they got wind of our situation and they knew we'd be running back to Tusorix to lick our wounds, someone tipped 'em about us" Horus sardonically smiled, shaking his head looking at a nodding Pryde for confirmation. - "That's despicable" Pryde added, frowning upon it.
- "To me , it is just more obnoxious work and unnecessary risk of death...anyways, let's get going.  I'll see you once this ends, hopefully." Checking his pilot suit and staring at the mechanics over his A-Wing, Araujo turned to board the ship as they looked back and nodded in approval. It was ready.

Once he was in, as the canopy closed, he turned to his right, to see an X-Wing's engines being activated, Hopfot looked at him and nodded. He nodded back. Doing the pre-flights checks and powering up the ship, he for a second forgot the fighter was using a landing gear.

Minutes later, in open space around the Hammer:

As he described in the briefing, the ships were surrounding the imperial flotilla. Two CRVs were moving to block the path of the Hammer itself. Enemy X-Wings were headed their way.
A quick glance at the onboard map display revealed they were "accompanied" by X-Wings, Y-Wings ...and A-Wings. The alarms activated at that precise moment, to inform him he was being locked in, and to remind Araujo that he was on the field, had tails and such tails were aiming their missiles at him. His training took over. He coldly targeted the incoming missile and swiveled the craft to its starboard, reducing throttle by instinct to maximize turn ratio and be able to fine aim faster , just to find there were not one but two missiles. The pirate dog linked the fire, they wanted the Imperials dead. Most of the Galaxy did actually. Average concussion missiles weren't that much of a problem if taken care of in due time though. Firing a few shots, Araujo eliminated the immediate threat.

While he weaved his way out of the attacker's vector with one hand on his control stick, he checked the map with his other hand, then he returned to the CMD and checked the friendlies to see how his guys were doing: Two X-Ws were on the SHU, the question came to his mind just to find Hopfot was engaging a third X-W -"Well, you're busy" he muttered. The A-W's old avionics wouldn't even display detailed shield strength information for the targeted craft. He always procrastinates its update - "Pryde, status?".

-"We took some hits but we're ok. They're not exactly the best aces out there and even this SHU can evade 'em". Indeed, the X-Wings could be seen missing a lot of shots... amateurs. -"Let's not underestimate them. I'll try to cover you in a bit" Araujo countered. In that precise moment, two laser bolts illuminated his cockpit with a reddish light. That was a close call he thought. No time for emotions, he had to survive and complete the mission.

The A-W pilots weren't much more skilled than the X-Wing pilots either, but they weren't meant to be underestimated. He still had 2 tails. Targeting one of them and manually tracking the other, he pulled his fighter up, shutned energy to the engines, cut the throttle and hoped the enemy would not be as quick to mirror his maneuver. The fighter responded smoothly and the enemy wasn't fast enough to match what he was doing. One of the fighters broke to a side to try to escape his tracking and surround him and the other pulled but didn't reduce throttle so Araujo could outmaneuver him, knowing the other wasn't aware he was the real target -"Amazing, you fell for it" he said with a smile. A few moments later, Araujo got the enemy on his reticle and appealed to his lasers to make quick work of the boogie as he kept track of the other via instruments. The enemy tried to evade him but all attempts were met with more persistence from Araujo until the pilot made a mistake: banked to the left in a steady course that could be predicted and didn't change it.Big mistake indeed.

What looked to be one of those MC80 CRS was indeed an "organically-shaped monstrosity" that surprisingly had virtually no firepower and maintained distance from the imperial ships. Araujo could take a quick glance at the vessel as he kept chasing the hostile A-W until its shields failed and the hull failed too under the barrage of laser fire coming from his own fighter, when a quick succession of radio messages took place -"Alpha Squadron, this the FRG Implacable, we are moving to protect the Hammer". A sudden explosion could be seen on the port side. -"This is Alpha II-3: I got one!" exclaimed Hopfot -"Good, now come help us" immediately answered Pryde. -"Roger, wilco. Alright, coming your way"

Then, the picture was clear: the pirates sent the Y-Ws to disable the hammer, didn't expect to interdict other ships, didn't know what else to do and continued with their original plan, the enemy CRS as decrepit as it looks, would send transports to the Hammer to plunder it once disabled perhaps.

Araujo had the other A-W on his reticle by now and the pilot just couldn't shake him away. A few shots later, the second enemy A-W was turned into space dust. Another far explosion could be seen. Hopfot was doing his work. Indeed Hopfot has managed to finish all the snubfighters. -"I'll do a flyby on the CRS to get sensor readings'' Hopfot offered.

-"...and let's gauge their turbolaser response, they're suspiciously quiet" Araujo added, quickly checking how the Implacable mercilessly dealt with the Y-Ws , then turning his craft to meet Hopfot who was closing on the enemy CRS. If Hopfot was free to do something else, Araujo would make sure his pilot would be tasked in the most efficient way possible.

Moments later, Hopfot interrupted the silence -"Pryde, are you receiving? I'm sending you my readings, triangulate with your own" -"Roger"

The sensors revealed most weapon emplacements were malfunctioning and the rest were deprived of their power sources. -"For whatever reason, they are unarmed. I'm going in" expressed Pryde with a bit of excitement in his voice.

-"Good luck," said Hopfot. Araujo tried to avoid feeling anxiety -"Let's do this. Hopfot , inspect one of the far CRVs, I'll inspect the other...see if you can destroy it" he ordered.

Suddenly, a new wave of fighters came out of the CRS' hangar -"More fighters!" Pryde exclaimed. By instinct, Hopfot and Araujo moved in and intercepted them quickly as they were leaving the hangar before Pryde could land. two more waves followed and Araujo was wondering if there could be any fighters left for them to capture. No more fighters came, the Imperial pilots rolled back to deal with the enemy CRVs.

Dealing with Corellian Corvettes is a thankless task. The ships are perfect for anti-starfighter screening and also light ship to ship combat. One approach is to charge them from behind, the aft section, where the engines are. Engine wash will impact the shields and a recharge will be needed, falling back is dangerous and needs to be done carefully. If the enemy turret manages to catch the fighter, the pilot needs to evade as he gets away ASAP. Flying parallel to the enemy laser trajectory is another option but requires precise maneuvering and can only be done for a short amount of time. Baiting the turrets to chase a fighter while the other attacks could be done depending on the configuration of the CRV: if it doesn't have that many turrets, it can be pulled as a tactic.

Hopfot decided to charge from behind and Araujo tried to fly parallel to the enemy fire's trajectory. Given the average operational training and awareness of the enemy forces, both maneuvers worked this time and the pilots dealt with the CRVs. The Hammer closed in to assist.

By the time the shuttle was approaching, Araujo and Hopfot inspected the CRVs and shot them down with the help of the few operative cannons the Hammer had. "Task did something useful at last" Araujo thought as he was engaging one of the CRVs carrying a gravity-well generator and noticed the green bolts reaching the CRV's hull, the Hammer was still able to fight and they caught on to what his unit was doing despite comms being inoperative.

Eliminating one more wave of fighters that pretty much ignored the shuttle, and leaving the bombers for the Implacable to eliminate, the three ships were able to get closer to the hangar. The fighters were received with blaster fire from soldiers and they swept the hangar, providing cover for the SHU to land. Special care was taken not to destroy the remaining fighters available on the far end of the hangar. -"There, it is now up to you guys" Araujo pointed to Pryde and the rest of the pilots, falling back into open space with a little sense of relief. Now it was up to his men to seize the cruiser somehow.

Pryde and his men proceeded to take positions and battle the soldiers on the cruiser. In minutes, they seized control of a data terminal not far from the hangar and Ty Seerlan proceeded to access it as the rest provided cover in a fiery battle. The options left weren't much as they'd find out when scanning for weakness on the ship's computer system.

Seerlan reached for his comm-link and communicated to Araujo-"This is Seerlan, I'm in, and I've figured the quickest way to neutralize the ship is to hack a hyperjump order in..." he went silence and opened his eyes wide while looking at the holoscreen "but the ship is already heading for the hyperjump point, we have a couple minutes left!" Seerlan was visibly anxious, clearly not expecting this and not entirely emotionally prepared to deal with the adrenaline. Pryde briefly turned to look at him in disbelief.

"Damn! pull back everybody!" exclaimed Pryde. The group then retreated until they were able to seal the hangar blast doors or rather, Pryde used the force to close a couple of them, LQC and LPhoenix shot the control terminals on two more and then they seized the remaining fighters. One of the fighters was re-wired to be remote-controlled so Pryde could recover the shuttle and bag his own fighter. Moments later, a number of X-Wings could be seen leaving the hangar along with the SHU. They were received by the other two Alpha fighters that remained in patrol around the area.

And then, just like that, the enemy CRS jumped out of the area.

-"That was close" exclaimed LQC, now piloting an X-Wing.

-"Well, we did it, right?" asked Milo

-"Yes, enemy CRVs destroyed, enemy fighters destroyed, enemy CRS ...kinda neutralized and we got their remaining fighters" Araujo summarized. -"Everyone ok? Report in!" eleven radio confirmations could be heard. All pilots were safe. -"Hammer, this is Alpha 1. I understand you still don't have radio but we are heading back to the secondary hangar"

Pryde added -"I think we did great"

-"Oh yes we did...now to finish the job on those pirates" conceded Horus. -"If Task lets us do it..." he added as an afterthought.

-"But first we get a bath and a meal" Araujo concluded. While the rest of the unit was totally hyped and full of adrenaline, he was mentally exhausted.

ISDII: Hammer's bridge (from wallpaperset.com)

Intro & News

It has been a week of grinding but also a week of reflections and as such, I've begun to express my ideas and I'm learning to man up to my stances and defining my path (and that of the unit since I feel that's my responsibility).

I have to be objective and evaluate our results. What I am going to do is to post the stats as usual and then offer an analysis of what I see about our situation and then some conclusions in a very academic fashion. The result is mixed: we compare ourselves with the top squadrons and we review the fun factor.

The goal is: in the context of a busy RL, to enjoy highly concentrated doses of smaller sessions where skill, communication and tactics are needed on the RP framework; to win missions. Let's get to the news, review what we've done so far and reflect about it, shall we? .

  • From the office of our IO:

"I am pleased to announce the award of the Gold Star of the Empire to LC Westric Davalorn!

Thanks for all of your hard work as we've worked through this project.

For exceptional and noteworthy service to the Emperor’s Hammer Internet and Reconnaissance Offices. In support of the Internet Office, LC Westric Davalorn led the effort to modernize the web site’s Craft List using updated models and rendering techniques to generate higher-resolution renders. After developing a suitable rendering process, working over a period of months he meticulously completed 170 renders of craft depicted on the Craft List by working with models sourced primarily from the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade team. This volume of work is no casual undertaking. In addition to 3D models sourced externally, Westric took the initiative to update Emperor’s Hammer-original models. This included 3D editing and assembly of disparate components to update craft OPTs (models), as well as utilizing techniques such as AI upscaling to update ship textures. This work improved the quality of the finished product, and will also be a resource for future efforts in updating the downloadable ship patches for use within the upgraded X-Wing Alliance platform. The final rendered images are currently available on the Craft List, and will be a valuable asset as information for the Fleet Manual and Order of Battle is updated and transitioned over to the new site. Leveraging these skills and techniques to support multiple projects, Westric also completed 29 renders in support of the Reconnaissance Office’s social media outreach efforts. These renders were successfully used in nearly 90 social media posts, and directly contributed to the Reconnaissance Office’s efforts to depict the thematic elements of the Emperor’s Hammer and the TIE Corps. LC Westric Davalorn’s performance of duty is in keeping with the finest traditions of Emperor’s Hammer service, and reflects great credit upon himself, Rho Squadron of Wing II, and the ISDII Warrior."

"Newsletter Archives Updated and Extended I am pleased to be able to announce some improvements in our archived club materials. As of a couple of days ago, we have completed a restoration of numerous archived club newsletters, such as the Emperor's Hammer Dark Sentinel and TIE Corps Battlecry, and related materials. This one has been on my list for a couple years now. With about a week of Squadron (Re)Mobilization remaining, this content should provide some additional resources to support the Wiki editing tasks for our members who enjoy trawling through historical Emperor's Hammer information. These changes include:

    • Restored the original Dark Sentinel ZIPs that contain the additional non-embedded files for NLs 13-47. These came from 15+ year old server backups, and I think had not been publically available since that time.
    • Manually de-virused NLs 46 and 47 (which contained a macro virus since they were originally released!) and updated the ZIPs.
    • Found and uploaded the long-lost NL 105.
    • Corrected NL 111 numbering (originally issued as a duplicate of 107).
    • Moved everything onto the archives subdomain and built 301 redirects. Updated the newsletter archive (https://tc.emperorshammer.org/newsletters.php) to provide updated and accurate links to each edition.
    • Removed the PDF copies of NLs 1-47 since these were essentially 'pictures' of the front page of the newsletter, and didn't contain the actual embedded content.
    • Uploaded the TIE Corps Battlecry archive as well as some misc newsletter-type items (a big thanks to Xander Drax for sending these!).
To get started, members will find most of what they would be looking for on the Newsletters (https://tc.emperorshammer.org/newsletters.php) page. This page now includes links to view/download PDF, HTML, or ZIP versions of the Dark Sentinel, as applicable/available. In the near future the Logistics Officer and I will coordinate the conversion of the 11 remaining pre-NL48 newsletters (when they switched to native HTML format) over to HTML.
Members looking to get more in-depth with the archived materials can head over to the archives site (https://archives.emperorshammer.org/) that now provides a few links for navigating the archives. Most portions of the archives will allow directory browsing, which is useful for viewing the additional files of NLs 1-47 without needing to download the ZIP package. (Some technical information concerning the early NLs is also available at https://wiki.emperorshammer.org/Dark_Sentinel) "

  • From the office of our RO:

Here is a nice graphic of upcoming and announced Star Wars games with tentative timelines.

Fingers crossed some of these are multiplayer in some form, however signs point to more single-player style games in the future.

  • Weekend Sparrings: Every weekend, you can log in Discord and meet your fellow squad mates for some good PvP practice on 1v1 /2v2 matches. I will be there on Friday nights -4 UTC (EST) and most likely during Saturday and Sunday nights at 21:00.
  • Wiki update: in progress I've been working a lot on the information on our wiki site. It is still a WIP but at least we got the structure of the article after a research on RL SpecOps articles and air force squadrons. Proceeding to fill it. I really suggest you guys fill up your INPRs and wiki articles if you haven't done so. If you do not have wiki access send me the information while we manage to get you a working account if possible. Updated our roster and revised the squadron wiki and added a page for Operation: Slumber Party. I am considering using the Wiki to post information that I repeatedly post here.
  • WSR format So I know the text on the evaluation is borked. I'm no html expert and I've been using "Pre" instead of just "p" ahh... There have been discussions on WSRs, updating them , their frequency, format. Been considering dumping the information that is being repeated on a wiki page and just give you eval and news. Rosters? you get rosters when you see eval...see what I mean?

Observation: Indeed he did not disappoint! His work is pretty interesting! The way he mingles both universes is fascinating. Love the attention to details and how the characters are presented. Looking forward to more of this. We need to develop our characters, that includes NPCs. In terms of ReMob, Pryde alone almost held the Fiction part on his own. I'm really happy because of his quality contribution and his permanent communication. I'm giving him his place as our chronicler.

Miscellaneous

  • Wiki Articles

As planned, I've started creating a number of wiki articles to place information we've been repeating here Wiki (click here) article for this. I waited for ReMob so I could help the squadron with the creation of a number of wiki articles but the goal is to place pertinent information there, avoid cluttering the WSR and keeping information handy for the unit. I updated our standing orders with a general explanation and links (217 words, enough for it to be the first Wiki edition) for the first new articles: Alpha Squadron Operations and Alpha Squadron Auxiliary Platforms.

  • Campaign Role Play.

The first article is a Wiki entry (click here) article for this. This should help define and explain our long term goals.

  • Auxiliary Platforms

As the EHTC adopts the concept of secondary games, we expand further on it and propose a list for us all to have fun with other squad mates. I dumped this list into a wiki page (click here) and updated it as we see fit.

  • Star Wars Book List:

As the site says "This is a simple list of all of the full-length Star Wars novels to date, in chronological order of when the stories take place, with the movies and TV shows also added for context. This list does not include most young readers' books or short novellas, or TV shows aimed at young children. Books whose stories overlap within the same timeline are listed in recommended reading order based on my own judgement. Release dates are for the US - dates and availability may vary in other countries". You can check this most useful list here: https://www.yodasdatapad.com/booklist.html. Bookmark it! I already did!!!

Praise be the Lag!

Monthly General Orders

Schedule Planning:

Remember to make room for all the fun we'll have flying and fighting on ReMob. Tell me ahead of time whether your schedule changes and remember we need each other if we are to make this work.

GoG XW Series

The classic Star Wars games (TIE Fighter, XvT, XWA, etc.) are available for digital sale at https://www.gog.com/ and http://steampowered.com/. The GOG version is generally preferred by most members for ease of patching with custom EH game content.

TCCORE

This basic IU course will help you familiarize with EHTC's procedures. I highly recommend you take it in case you haven't.

Update uniform, INPR and wiki character article!:

This goes for me as well. Each time you get promoted or receive an award you should update your uniform. Yea, I'll update mine.

Commander's Analysis

So, less than 3 days left. Highly unlikely we can do anything else...by "we" I mean the few of us active. I'm not going to push it anymore as I don't want to burn out those of us who are left. TC wise we did not achieve the goals but as a unit, we had good moments. So, did we fail? This is a debate even on the officer level. Let's consider a few items here:

a) The negative side was Ty Seerlan leaving us. He was nice enough to provide an exit feedback where he more or less stated he felt pressure from the EH grinding system. I thought he'd not wish to do MP but it was actually the pressure to excel at SP that got him. I can kinda relate as I felt the pressure to do the mission building part but I came to terms and understood I can't rush the process. I need practice.

b) I'm physically and mentally tired. I dedicated the entire month to the EH.

c) Some of us did absolutely nothing during this month, while some others did a lot. I understood that for some, we aren't a priority insofar as entertainment time. Some contributed with quality fun time and there's me, breaking my MP own record.

So, for the positive aspects

1) The PvEs with LQC-75-3 and LPhoenix were good old-school , pure, unadulterated fun. Milo is also a good win to fly with! Guys in all my years as CMDR those were the moments I really felt I was commanding a squadron of talented pilots. And you know we had fun hehe. Totally priceless. Am I counting the number of matches here? no. Well, yea we scored a few but I gather our product here is a tactic (won't say META yet) for some of the vanilla tactical offers XvT has.

2) Reading Talons Pryde's work was awesome. I mean, he introduces you to his character, he manages to bring together two universes in a fascinating reading. It is a good way to better understand his character and to have elements to include him in fictions or mission creation in the future.

3) Being able to build the wiki profile: part of our strategic objectives goes by building a strong squadron lore and that requires character development. Yes, writing your bio is part of it and building character sheets is also part of it and the RP guys around us know this. So I cobbled together a few data points and proposed a character sheet, filling it with basic information for each one of us, ensuring that 200+ words were introduced on each profile. Ideally, each squadron member should've done this but not all are proficient on Wiki edition. I'm not the best, but I got the basics ...errr I still haven't finished the Wiki IU but that's me being lazy, won't deny it.

4) Topping the MP killboards. Yea, the old goal of mine of topping the killboards on MP (PvE and PvP). Thanks to my neighbor's nearly insatiable appetite for XvT/BoP/XWA (and mine, admittedly) we did the unthinkable: we flew more PvE/PvP matches than the rest of the TC during a fleet-wide competition for a month. I won't claim victory as we have some days left so I just dropped by to report to you my penguins.

Closing

To give a conclusion, I'd say the first lesson is about the effects the demands of the TC mechanism could have on a pilot. Ty Seerlan was nice to give feedback on this. My take is we focus on quality over quantity. I'd rather have a couple fun sessions than endless spam and people under pressure for either grinding or highscoring. Do I have to push people from this into grinding? I don't think so. Anyone who wants to fly a lot is welcome (hell,I do it) but that doesn't mean you have to follow the same pattern.

Why did I spam the killboards then?

To prove I can do it, with another crazy XvTer, using the classics during a TC-wide competition month. We aren't done yet though, the month hasn't ended.
I truly wanted to have time and energy to build the missions, do the IUs and go for SP but there's only so much one can humanly do. Besides, it was meant to be a collective effort...of grinders and we are not grinders and we aren't a complete team yet... so I kinda feel bad about it but at the same time I need to recognize the efforts some of you did and it will be properly done with medals this month.

I feel the current system encourages grinding. My goal is for us to have fun in a casual, organized and consistent way. But in order to do this, we first needed to win at something the EH excels: grinding. I can grind points and be as active as anyone else and I've proven it this month. Now, I equally state I want to focus on quality fun with casual gaming. I'll grind again when I can be bothered about it. For now I want to RP, write fiction, create missions and improve my PvP skills.

I want us to focus on mission completion, 1v1/2v2 tactics , fiction and character development and mission building. As I said, that's where we should focus, in small doses, to avoid burnout. I mean....you don't eat your favorite meal everyday. What would happen if you did it? You'll be sick of it and will start rejecting it.
So my take on our performance? We could've done more on SP and more on PvE. We could've had people contributing with Wiki or IUs. PvP with squadron mates is a different tale...as only with TRA we could get such games. No one on the EH would team up against us on the classics. Am I bragging? no. I mean almost no one else is doing the classics on MP except us. So a XvTer can't find matches on his club ..food for thought. I asked each one of you if you had any doubts about the goals in (Re)Mob and no one had doubts, but only a few of us participated. Don't get me wrong, I deeply appreciate what each one of you did, even if it was just 1 LoC and I deeply, deeply appreciate the PvE matches we held, the fictions... I'm looking at those who ghosted us this month.

Rolling back to the lack of internal opportunities for PvP, I'm inclined to think we might need to bring back SGs but that's for EHCS to decide. I'd say let the TC be the TC, pick up recruits from communities with overlapping interests with us and work with that to focus on our games and the essence of the TC itself. We can't keep expanding to cater to all audiences with an ever-growing list of games and a playerbase that won't play the classics when the classics are the very reason the TC exists and is structured the way it is. I'm not being obtuse, I play a myriad of games but, I'm appealing to the concept of marketing about defining a target audience. We are here for the SW space sims. Do we have such communities with common interests with the TIE Corps? Yes, we have them in the XWVM, TFTC and XW Discords plus the XWAU forums. Are new players rejecting the classics? not necessarily. We have younger pilots interested in the games and we have older players totally not interested in the games. It isn't a generational issue, it is more about looking for the right profile of recruits.

Do we have ideas to keep this show running? oh yes, we do. And lets not forget XWAU/TFTC are in active development and there might be something around XvT if there's enough interest for it.

Important point I want to emphasize: We (those of us leading units) also need to display commitment. This is one of the reasons I'm going out of my way to provide weekly reports. As I told a junior CMDR, the report is where we speak to the unit and the fleet, urbi at orbi. This is where we state how we are doing asa unit and where we want the unit to go.

Dismissed!

Yea, that's from Magadascar Penguins, not intending copyright things here, just a reference..

.

March to victory my penguins!
