Ok, Diamondbacks... yours and my vacation are finished. We have to restore our normal activity. Normal I mean one/two battles per week. I hope you are well rested because I am going to arrange some squad vs squad competition. We will have some small changes, I has just send the removal form concerning LCM Flagellant. Have a good time on Phoenix Frigate mate, hope you will rejoin someday. Most of you are starting holidays soon, I believe you will find some more time for our squadron. All of the Monthly Squadron Evaluation awards were given, you should be satisfied. I have to say it was the most quiet week since I become CMDR. Nothing interesting happend. Many of my CMDR fellows were promoted... CM Delak and Clark to CPT. CPT Frodo to Major. Congrats mates... very well deserved.

= "Lost Souls [Part Five]" =
The newly promoted CM Derek Dan stood in front of the mirror in his full dress uniform. He looked at his new CM insignia and smiled. It had been more than one year since he was promoted to LCM. He waited long for this promotion. He was pleased with all the work he had done so far. Suddenly, he heard a voice behind him.
- Wow, Derek are you going for a date or something? - CPT Marcin Kaczynski said. Marcin had just returned from the mission and he was still in his flight suit. Derek turned immediately and was just going to say something, when Marcin noticed something:
- Oh, I see. You've been promoted to CM! Congratulation, Derek.
- Thanks - Derek answered.
- So, they finally noticed how good pilot you are? - CPT Kaczynski joked.
- Ha, ha, very funny - Derek answered - I think that finding this republic base had a great impact on my promotion - he finished.
- Well, maybe, but I'm think you deserved this promotion - Marcin said - Remember, we graduated from Daedalus on the same day and we started our duty in Crusaders together - he continued.
- Yeah, I remember. Heh, those are ancient times now. Almost two years passed. Many battles fought. Many friends gone. - Derek sighed and paused for a second. He continued:
- Well, we need to think about the present now. We need to wait for the Grey Wolf to arrive, before we could proceed with our mission.
- We don't need to wait any further - CPT Kaczynski said.
- Are they here already? - Derek asked.
- Yes, Grey Wolf arrived when we where docking - Marcin answered.
- So, we are almost done here - Derek said.
"This is ISD Grey Wolf. We are sending the science crew now and we await new orders" the voice in the speakers said.
- This is VA Brakka. How soon can you make another jump? - VA Brakka said.
"We need to do some calculations and system checks right now. We should be able to jump in five minutes"
- Good, we are transmitting the coordinates now - Brakka said and ordered one of the navigation officers to send the data to Grey Wolf.
"Data received. What's our mission there?"
- There is a small pirate outpost there. We contacted them not so long ago and we are afraid that they may contact the Rebels in the area. We need you to go there and arrest the depot and it's crew until we are done here. We'll send you a message when everything is secured here - Brakka said.
"Understood. Any other orders?" the voice asked
- Well, yes. We promised them safety so try not to destroy them. We only need them to be silent for some time. I imagine that once they see a ISD hypering in, they probably try to run or, if they are stupid, attack you. Try to use fighters with ion cannons to disable their ships - Brakka finished.
"Understood. Grey Wolf out".
The communication between two ships was finished. VA Brakka walked to another post and asked an officer sitting in front of the console:
- So how is our droid doing?
- It has established link with VSD's central computer and is now making a system scan. It should take about ten minutes - officer responded.
- Any information so far? - VA asked.
- Yes, about 90 % of ships systems is down including sub-light engines - officer replied.
- That's not good - Brakka said - I want a full report as soon the scan is completed - he finished.
- Yes, sir! - officer nodded.
VA Brakka looked at the panel once more and then walked to the viewport. ISD Grey Wolf was still here, but they were making final preparations to jump. An officer walked to VA and reported:
- The science crew is onboard.
- Order them to begin work on the data from the probe as soon as they can - VA ordered.
- Yes, sir - officer nodded.
Officer saluted and walked away. Brakka looked through the viewport. Grey Wolf was gone. "So we are on our own again" he thought.
- Any orders to my pilot, sir - Brakka heard a familiar voice from behind. He turned away and saw COL Wil Stiker.
- Hello Wil - Brakka said and continued - I think your pilots deserved some rest. They've done some great work here. Keep one squadron on patrol. This should be sufficient. Once we gain access to VSD's navigation computer, we'll hyper back to Aurora.
- What about those platforms? - COL Striker asked.
- They will be destroyed. This virus if far to dangerous to be left alone here - Brakka said.
- Should I sent some of my fighter to destroy the platforms? - Wil asked.
- No, we'll use the self-destruct mechanism and save some warheads - Brakka said and smiled.
As they were talking, an officer approach them and said:
- Sir, the VDS systems scan has been completed.
He gave VA Brakka a datapad. Brakka looked at it and began to read. He stopped at some point. He knitted his eyebrows, gave the datapad to COL Striker and walked to the officer responsible for the scan. The officer saluted.
- What do you mean that we can't make a jump to Aurora. Is there not enough fuel for this jump? - VA asked.
- No, sir! - the officer replied - Fuel is not the problem. VSD's tanks are full and the hyperdrive is at 100% efficiency - he replied.
- So, why can't we make a jump? - Brakka asked angrily.
- Sir, the droid reported that the jump calculation units of the VSD's navigation computers are damaged beyond repair - officer answered.
- All of them? Auxiliary too? - Brakka asked.
- Yes, sir. All of them - officer replied and continued - they all have been shoot several times with blasters and without human tech team, we won't be able to repair them.
- Strange... - Brakka said.
- There's one more thing, sir - officer said.
- Go, on? - Brakka said.
- Although the calculations computers are down, there is one navigation point stored in the navigation computer memory - officer said.
- Where does it point to? - Brakka asked.
A moment of silence passed.
- Well, it looks like it points somewhere out of our galaxy. To be specific it points to the region in deep void between galaxies - officer replied.
Suddenly this situation became clear to VA Brakka. The VSD's crew knew that they were infected and that they will die soon. They tried to make a jump far from any civilization so that nobody would get infected. For some reason they failed to jump. The VDS's commodore must had predicted that whoever finds them, will try to take the VSD. By destroying the calculation units, the commodore made sure that no jump is possible ... except the one stored in the navigation computer. Whoever wanted to seize the VSD would be forced to sent someone to repair the calculation units. With the virus onboard nobody would survive long enough to repair them unless they had ... a vaccine. This way the commodore made sure that at least the VSD wouldn't be the source of the contamination.
"Very wise decision" VA Brakka thought.
There were many pilots in the canteen right now. Some just returned form the recon flights, some from the patrols. CM Derek Dan entered the canteen and immediately found his squad mates. They were easy to find because they made enough noise to wake up a dead. Derek walked towards them.
- Hey, Derek is here! - LCM Ace shouted.
- Hello everyone - Derek said.
- Hello Commander! - CPT Drako said.
Derek knowing what will probably happen next said:
- So it looks that the drinks are one me today.
- Wow, Derek, you can read in our minds? - CM Adam Szydlowski joked.
- Well, CPT Michael already bought a round for everyone so it looks like it's your turn now - CM Tvan'Oris added.
Although there was some time since Michael's promotion, there was no opportunity to celebrate it. There were many tasks being assigned everyday and there was no time to sit down and have fun. Now, with Derek's promotion and near completion of this mission, the whole squadron could gather.
- So, Derek, next stop CPT, heh? - Drako joked.
- Yeah - Ace added.
- Well, it looks like I would need to find a hidden SSD or something like this during my recons to get promoted further - Derek joked.
- Hey, look, guys from Krayt - LT Hubert said.
- Yeah, but I don't see flight II members there - Michael said surprised.
- They are probably still doing their recon. The sector they were to recon was very far from here and that's way it's taking them so long - CPT Marcin Kaczynski answered.
- Heh, let's get back to our beer while there's no Rebel fleet around - CM Arti said and laughed.
Suddenly the music stopped playing and everything went black. In the next second, red lights switched on. Red lights meant red alert and red alert meant troubles.
- Damn, Arti, you jinxed it! - LCM Ace said and started running to his quarters. Rest of the pilots in the canteen followed him.
- Sir, a Rebel fleet is entering the area! - an officer shouted.
- Blasted pirates, we should have killed them when we had a chance! - VA Brakka said angrily - Sound the red alert - he continued.
- Sir, the Rebels are hailing us - another officer reported.
- Put them through - Brakka ordered.
"This is admiral Hookes from them fifth New Republic fleet. This base belongs to the Republic. Surrender or be destroyed. You have a minute to comply."
VA Brakka walked quickly to the tactical display. What he saw, almost terrified him. There were eight CRS's there. Three in front of the Intrepid, two on the left side and three on the right side. Only part of the sector behind the Intrepid was empty, but the ISD couldn't escape, because Rebels brought an interdictor cruiser with them. To make the matter worse, the INT was defended by a thick screen of fighters. VA Brakka turned to COL Striker and said:
- We are in trouble, Wil. We can't escape because of the interdictor. We basically have no chance against this fleet. Even if your pilots manage to save the Intrepid from the bombers, the CRS's will finish us off. Our only chance if destroy that interdictor and hyper out.
COL Striker looked at the display and said:
- I believe in my pilots, sir, but the Rebels built a fighter screen that will be extremely hard to penetrate. There are more than twenty rebel squadrons there. It looks like they have used all their fighters to protect the interdictor. A frontal attack will surely fail. If we had even one fighter behind the INT, we could do it, because all their fighters are between us and the INT.
The time was running very fast. VA Brakka looked again at the display. COL Striker was right. Nothing, not even the most advanced imperial fighters would be able to penetrate the fighter screen. The situation was hopeless. Brakka looked again at the INT and when he was about to turn away, he noticed that four red dotes appeared in some distance behind the INT. He took a closer looked and then shouted:
- What are those!
An officer checked something on the panel and reported:
- This is Krayt II returning from the recon.
"So we haven't run out of luck yet" Brakka thought.
- Contact them and order to destroy the INT. Launch all available fighters and order them to protect the Intrepid. Turn the ship around and give full speed ahead. We need to distract Rebels so they won't notice pilots from Krayt! - he ordered.
- Sir, we can't contact Krayt. We are being jammed! - an officer reported.
- Let's hope they'll know what to do - Brakka said and turned to the tactical display.
Four red dotes were closing to the INT but they were still on return vector to Intrepid. Suddenly, they changed and took and attack vector on the INT. "Good and now go for the kill Krayt" VA Brakka thought. Fighters started to launch from Intrepid. Rebel B-wings and X-wings that were close to the Intrepid changed formation and took an attack vector on the ISD. A-wings flew as their cover. Rest of the Rebel fighters was still defending the INT. VA Brakka was tracking the Krayt II fighters on the display. Suddenly he saw that a major part of the fighters protecting the INT broke up and started flying towards Krayt. "Damn, the Rebel noticed them. Faster Krayt!" he shouted in his thoughts. Meanwhile the battle over Intrepid started. Imperial advanced fighters got first kills, but VA Brakka knew that sooner or later his pilots will be overwhelmed by the number of Rebel fighters. The Intrepid didn't have much time left. Brakka observed as the pilots from Krayt went through the Rebel fighter screen. Three red dots faded away.
- Sir, Krayt two-two, two-three and two-four destroyed - an officer reported.
All Intrepid's hopes for survival was concentrated in one fighter, Krayt two-one. VA Brakka watched as the fighter nears the INT chased by the Rebel crafts. Suddenly, that last red dot faded away too.
- Where is it! What's going on! - VA Brakka shouted.
- Sir, the interdiction field is down! We can escape! - an officer reported.
- Sir, all remaining rebel fighters took an attack vector on us - another officer reported.
VA Brakka had no time to think what just had happen. He needed to give orders right now:
- Arm the self-destruct mechanism on those platforms with zero timer. Order the droid on the VSD to make a jump right now.
- But, sir, we won't be able to track the VSD once it jumps! - one of the officers said.
- Do it! - Brakka ordered and continued - Order all remaining fighters to follow us as soon as we are out.
VA Brakka looked through the viewport. Two platforms were bursting with flames and the VSD's engines ware getting ready to accelerate. Few seconds later the VSD entered the hyperspace.
- The VSD is out! - navigation officer reported.
- Good, now it's our turn. Get us out of here - Brakka gave order to the navigation officer.
The bridge was silent. Some officers were working on their post. VA Brakka stood silent. An officer took a datapad and headed to VA. COL Striker stopped the officer and took the datapad. He read quickly and then walked to his COM.
- What are our losses, Wil - VA Brakka.
- We fought brave, sir, but we were overwhelmed. We have lost more than 30% of our pilots. The ship has lost it's shields and there are many casualties in the front sections. - COL Stiker said.
- Has the Grey Wolf been notified to return home? - VA Brakka asked.
- Yes, they are already on their way - COL Striker replied.
VA Brakka paused for a minute. Then he asked:
- What about Krayt II pilots.
- We have confirmed destruction of three fighters. We are not sure about the last one piloted by LCM Argat. She probably armed all heavy rockets and did a suicide run on the INT's power generators. We don't know if she had ejected.
VA Brakka was silent for a moment. He looked at the stars. They were peaceful again. Then he turned to COL Striker and said:
- We have lost many good pilots today and we are coming home with empty hands. The only thing that comforts me is that the virus from Republican won't be used against our troops.
COL Striker saluted and walked away. VA Brakka turned to the viewport and thought "Now that the VSD is deep in the cold void of space, it's crews lost souls may finally find rest. They will never again be disturbed by anyone."
