" Reconnaissance Duty"

by LCM Vessicant

Vessicant squeezed the control column anxiously as his TIE Vanguard moved into launch position. He glanced over his shoulder at the fighter immediately behind him; all was well. At last the order to accelerate came through his headset and he was off. After the Intrepid’s hangar was cleared Vessicant went to full power and assumed his predetermined course. A few moments later a second TIE Vanguard appeared to starboard.

Vessicant smiled broadly under his helmet. This was his first mission as a Flight Leader, a joyous occasion for any Imperial pilot. To his right was his first and only wingman, Lieutenant Phantom. She was new to the Intrepid, but a very skilled and promising pilot. Vessicant was pleased that his first wingman was of such caliber.

“Eye one to Eye two, status report.”

“This is Eye two, situation nominal. Ready to proceed with mission, sir.”

“Standby.”

The young Lieutenant Commander looked nonchalantly behind him as three new signals appeared on his radar. The second flight had been launched right on schedule. A short time later the three TIE Phantoms closed in behind Eye flight. Vessicant chuckled lightly to himself, wondering who came up with these crazy flight designations.

“Lash one to Eye one, what is your status?”

“Ready to proceed with mission, Commander Doros.”

“Right, just remember that if you run into any trouble contact me immediately. That’s no superiority fighter you’re flying. We’re on standby, over and out.”

“Aye, sir.”

Vessicant watched the Intrepid’s perimeter fighters pass overhead before ordering his wingman forward. His flight was to make a detailed scan of a nebula just within EH territory. Imperial Command believed that a small unfriendly force was launching raids on nearby shipping routes from the cover of this stellar phenomenon. If Eye flight detected anything it was to return to base. The Intrepid would then enter the nebula and eradicate the foe.

Vessicant immediately ordered radio silence. Besides the obvious need to maintain the element of surprise, ship to ship communications would be nearly useless anyway within the signal refracting gas cloud. Scanning under these conditions would take much time and skill. The signal jamming effect of the nebula was more powerful in some areas than others. Logically the enemy would hide where scanners would be all but useless (these areas would have to be checked visually), nonetheless, the assigned portion of the nebula had to be inspected.

Vessicant sent one last message to his wingman, “Stay in visual contact with me, follow my movements, and remember the direction out of the nebula. Reduce to half power, we’ll go in slow and steady.”

“Roger, sir.”

The mission was ponderously slow, made even worse by the fact that the scanner readings were being distorted much more than expected. After forty minutes of meticulously pushing deeper into the nebula, with no sign of enemy presence, Vessicant was becoming impatient. He checked his six anxiously, hoping that an enemy fighter would be on him. At least then he’d have something to do.

Vessicant wiggled his ship to the left as a signal to his wingman. Both craft passed through a large wall of purple gas and began scanning. Vessicant caught something out of the corner of his eye. He kept his gaze on that area as both fighters plodded on. There it was again, this time he saw it more clearly. It looked like the faint silhouette of a fighter.

Eye two followed him in to investigate. Now they were picking up strong readings from somewhere nearby. The two Imperial craft cautiously broke through the thin veil of gas that had obscured the silhouette. Vessicant grinned as his targeting box lit up. Barely twenty metres ahead, and smack-dab in his sights was a lone R-41 Starchaser.

Vessicant resisted the urge to blast the fighter in front of him. It would have been a sweet kill, the prey was oblivious to the hunter breathing down its neck. Eye flight ducked back into cover as per Vessicant’s visual signals. They would shadow this fool until his patrol led them right to his base.

Ten minutes passed with no results and Vessicant was beginning to suspect something was amiss. Suddenly, a mixed wave of relief and disappointment washed over him as the Pirate base came into view. He was glad that his suspicions were unfounded, he had pondered the possibility that the Starchaser pilot had seen the Imperials and was leading them away from his base. Vessicant’s disappointment stemmed from the fact that this had not been the case. Such an act, which would have been a solo effort (since no radio transmissions had been sent), would have evoked Vessicant’s respect and admiration. This foe, however, had been completely blind to his foe’s presence even after ten minutes of unswerving proximity. This was not a worthy opponent.

The Starchaser pilot had no doubt been taken quite aback by the sudden flurry of radio chatter from his brethren and the equally sudden flash of light that now engulfed his fighter. Vessicant’s fingers relaxed and his lone laser began recharging. The Pirate base was now brimming with activity, its defenses hastily being raised. The new LCM reveled in the chaos his flight’s arrival had caused.

He had performed his primary duty, and even scored first blood for the coming battle. He thought for a moment and smiled. Why not take the initiative and bring more glory to his squadron by making a quick inspection run of the enemy force. He would also be drawing what few fighters were active away from his less experienced comrade, allowing her to withdraw safely. He radioed his intentions to Phantom and ordered her to head back to the Intrepid with the target coordinates.

Vessicant dumped his laser energy into the engines and set his deflectors to full forward. He made a high speed run on the enemy installation, firing off a few bursts as he passed over a flight of defense fighters. His mock attack drew off more attention than he’d expected. He now had to contend with fire from the Pirate Platform, a Frigate, a Corvette, and two flights of irritated R-41s. If he’d been in a more battle-worthy craft, he’d have let these scum try to gain retribution for their fallen comrade, but the odds he realized were against him.

He expertly dodged the Frigate’s barrage and skimmed the bridge, no doubt soiling a few commanders’ undergarments in the process. Vessicant looked intently at the scanner readout. “Munitions,” he thought, “that should make a nice target for the Intrepid”.

The R-41 flights had split up, one continued to pursue him, while the other had moved between him and the Corvette. They were trying to trap him. Vessicant wouldn’t be intimidated by these primitive craft flown by such undisciplined pilots. He heeded their challenge, heading straight toward the oncoming flight. He strengthened his forward shields for good measure; if he did by some fluke of cosmic misfortune make a mistake here he didn’t want to lose his life in such a stupid manner.

He maneuvered around their fire and headed straight for the second craft in the formation. Vessicant held his course, barely flinching at the few shots that now found a mark. At the last possible moment, the Pirate veered off course to evade the imminent collision. Vessicant’s scare tactic worked better than he’d hoped, the pilot had been so scared that he’d almost collided with his FL. This unexpected action confused both R-41 flights, and drew their attention away from their current courses. Before either group had time to react, two fighters collided head-on, and two more grazed each other, spinning off uncontrollably.

Vessicant chuckled at the sight behind him, he hadn’t even had to fire a shot. His shields were now reduced somewhat, but were still at a manageable level for his final scan. The Corvette landed a single hit, which slightly annoyed Vessicant, but in the end it was unable to defend itself against his prying eyes. The Corvette was carrying troops, and was obviously plotting a course out of the nebula. The Intrepid’s forces would have to move quickly to destroy this ship before it escaped. Vessicant’s computer calculated eleven minutes before the Corvette reached cover.

He turned and made his way, relatively unhindered, out of the nebula. The ISD was moving at full sublight speed along the vector Phantom had relayed. Vessicant had just enough time to transmit his findings and enter the hangar before the Intrepid entered the nebula. Lash flight was ordered in first to deal with the fleeing Corvette, fighters, and to harass the Frigate; objectives which they performed admirably.

The Frigate made a noble last stand in defense of the Platform, but was rapidly overwhelmed. It’s brilliant explosion eliciting a chorus of cheers from the crowds assembled around the Intrepid’s viewports. The Platform attempted to surrender, but it’s pleas fell upon deaf ears. The Intrepid’s orders were to take no prisoners; attacks on EH shipping in the area was to be stopped entirely. Just as well; the only good pirate is a dead pirate.
