Hey Squadron Report for January 19th through 25th 2003.

Hey Hey! It's time for another Hey Squadron Report. A relatively quiet week for the squadron as a whole, but let's do it!

SQUADRON NEWS

The Hey Squadron Top Ace Competition is running. You have until the 31st of January to get your pilot files for XWA-IW #32 to me. It's a fun battle, not too easy, not too hard. I have only two submissions so far. C'mon people! There's an IS-BW up for grabs!

We'll be flying against Praetorian Squadron the 5th through the 12 of February. Be ready! I'll announce the battle for the mission on the 4th. An IS-BW is up for grabs on that one too. Let's show Praetorian what we're made of!

I've been busy this past week, so work on the squadron webpage hasn't gone anywhere. We'll see what happens this next week.

Note about thw Wing III mailing list. Try not to send one word/sentence replies over it. It is pretty annoying to get 10 plus e-mails with one sentence cluttering your inbox. I'm guilty of this as well...

Internet Issues

There is currently a worm doing the rounds at the moment, which is impacting the performance of the internet around the world. The worm is designed to target known flaws in SQL Server, a database application produced by Microsoft. However, the worm scans so aggressively that it can actually affect the performance of your own internet experience. Those of you on broadband will probably be very likely targets and should look at blocking port 1434 on the UDP protocol if you have firewall functionality that supports specific settings. Otherwise, a general firewall such as McAfee Firewall or ZoneAlarm should do the trick. Those who do actually run SQL Server or MSDE (a desktop version of the server) should check they are patched as this is an exploit that has been known since July 2002.

inally I managed to get time to create a professional EHCOC Website. It can be found here. The Combat Manual is still the old version. There will be a new one with updated stuff soon. The Manual can be found here. Feel free to eMail me your comments. But be aware, not everything is working yet and the site is not fully finished. You also need at least Internet Explorer 6.0 or Netscape Navigator 7.0 to view the XML Scripts of the site. Please do not include this problem in a bug report!

Sovereign Wargame Begins!

The new SSSD Sovereign wargame, Operation Outrageous Fortune, begins Sunday, Jan. 19. It pits Team Blue Falcon (Wings I, IV and V) vs. Team Red Dragon (Wings II, III and Omega Squadron) in a war of space superiority, planetary conquest, continental invasion, and assassination and prisoner rescue missions. Sovereign personnel will wage the war on the TIE, XvT, XWA, Jedi Knight II and Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds platforms. The Task Force Leaders are LC Frodo (Blue) and LC Jon Doyle (Red). The gamesmaster is WO/AD Pel.

Take IWATS Courses! They look good on your ID Line and you learn stuff.

Teach your CMDR to type! Crap, I've been catching myself misspelling words and hitting the wrong keys way, way too often.

MISCELLANEOUS
-------------------------------

Well, I've taken my first step into a larger universe. Went to a buddy's house and LAN gamed all Monday afternoon. We co-oped Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. My God, that is awesome! Watching someone cut loose with a flamethrower or minigun against an on-rushing horde of nasties is a thing of beauty. Tried my hand at a little MP Ghost Recon too. Give me a night mission and I'm pretty good to go. The last mission I played, I think I had something like an 8:1 kill/loss ratio. Not bad for blind man! :P I think I'm going to have to try XWA MP now, I'm much better with things that fly.

I think that covers it for this week.
