SALUTE
Major Jer Stryker reporting for Hornet Squadron on 04.30.2004 0300Z

SQUADRON NEWS
Greetings and welcome (back) to the Hornet Weekly Squadron Report, as presented by Major Jer Stryker.   For those of you out of the loop, I assumed command of this squadron on Monday.  For those of you really out of the loop, your former commander, LC Kenath Zoron, left for the Reserves about three weeks ago.  I wish you the best of luck in RL ("Real Life" for the uninformed), and hope you return to active duty soon.  For those of you who don't know me (and that's most of you), I started out in Hornet Squadron a couple years ago and ended up as her commander somehow.  I too had to depart for RL reasons last summer.  Other than moving across the country, I haven't made much progress on my goals, but I did notice that being out of the Tie Corps wasn't making much of a difference (I just found other ways to waste time), so I came back.  Well, that's enough for the intro.  We have a TON of stuff to go over this week so let's get to it.
  • I sent out an email on Tuesday letting everyone know I was here.  LT Carcharoth was the only one who responded or otherwise got into contact with me, so he gets a smiley face by his name this week.  This morning I sent out an email to each of you individually that I have not made contact with yet.  Your first assignment under my command is to respond to that email to let me know you are alive, and to tell me how excited you are that things are going to pick up around here. :)
  • Let's get the unpleasant part out of the way:  Inactivity. (boo inactivity!  evil!)  All pilots:  If I don't hear from you at all for 30 days, you will receive a warning.  If you don't respond to that warning within one week, you will be considered AWOL (absent without leave) and removed from the roster.  If you know you're going to be away for a while, make sure you send me an email and mark yourself as "on leave" in your profile.  Also, flight leaders:  I expect some form of activity from you at least once a week if you want to keep your FL spot.  This could be flying (preferably), or posting to the message board, hanging out in IRC, or contributing to the squadron or Tie Corps somehow, in some way.  Shooting me an "I'm here" email is not enough.  Good excuses (exams, computer problems, being on leave) are ok every once in a while, but if you don't maintain the kind of activity I expect, and if I feel there is someone more deserving of your FL spot, then I will give it to them.
  • Okay, now for the good news.  I was going over everyone's files and noticed that by the end of May, everyone in the squadron except for myself and Commander noWedge will be up for promotion.  This means that if everyone puts in some good activity this month, I might be able to hand out a whole bunch of promotions at the end of May.  There's nothing I love more than handing out promotions.  Promotions and medals, that's my job.  You get them, and I have the honor of pinning them on you.  Speaking of medals, a couple of you are overdue for some, and I've already started working on that.
  • So what are some ways to be active enough to get the promotions?  Well, the best way I think is to participate in competitions.  That way you get some flying in, you compete against other people (which is fun), and if you win a competition you also get medals.  Yeah medals!  So, just for you guys, every week I search out all the competitions that I can, that we can participate in, and I put them all in a list right below the Squadron News, complete with links to their details and everything.  I can't make it much easier for you than that. :)  I also submitted applications for a couple of competitions just for our squadron this morning, so you should be hearing about them soon.
  • If you haven't already done so, I'd recommend that you register and start posting on our squadron message board (click the link to go there, duh).  Because so many of us live all over the place, it's almost impossible for us all to socialize with each other (to help us better function as a squadron).  I've noticed that the people who get the most enjoyment out of the Tie Corps and stay here the longest are the ones who socialize on the message boards and IRC, and a lot of us make good friends here too.  I've gone ahead and started a thread on the Hornet message board called "Hornet Squadron, Report in!" and I'd like for every single person in this squadron to post a reply there.  Once everyone has posted, I'll start a run-on thread, which is a story that we all contribute to.  If you need any help registering for the message boards, email me and I'll tell you where to go.
  • I'm going to start working on a new squadron website this weekend.  I may not get it all done, because there's an air show on Saturday that I'm going to attend.  I'll definitely have it up by the end of next weekend at the latest.  I would have gotten most of it done today, except I spent much of today contacting everyone, setting up competitions, and writing what will probably be the longest WSR in the history of the Tie Corps!
  • Next item of business:  uniforms.  I'd like it very much if everyone posted their uniform on their personnel profile.  It makes us look like a more cohesive unit when we all do things together.  There is a program available that helps you make your uniform image at ttt.tiecorps.net.  This program is really easy to use and it takes about 15 seconds to make a uniform with it.  If you don't have 15 seconds (or the time to download and install TTT), email me and I'll make your uniform and email it to you so that you can post it in your profile.
  • Okay, last thing:  Have fun!  This is a gaming club.  We're all here because we love these old X-Wing and Tie Fighter games.  There are so many fun things to do in the Tie Corps, so make the most of it!  Also my door is always open.  If you think there's anything I could do that would make being in Hornet more fun, let me know.  If you're having problems of any kind in the Tie Corps I'm here for that too.
Well there you have it, the squadron news.  Hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed spending an hour writing it.  Next week we'll cover citations, pilot/officer of the week, and probably the new squadron homepage.  Then after that I'm going to spend more time flying and less time writing, because we'll have some competitions going on by then, and don't forget, I'm eligible to win the medals for the squadron competitions just as much as you guys.  And you know how much I love medals!
