Beta Squadron Report #8

Saturday, April 2nd, 2005

"The meeting chamber fell to an abrupt darkness as the last drunken stragglers of the unit made their belated way into the crowded enclosure. Some of the pilots adjusted in their seats, weary from the routine of an officer. Others cast fleeting glances upon their surroundings, prepared for the vagaries of another rambling announcement. All maintained a facade of restraint and discipline. The quiet hum of the holoprojector whirled to life, casting an azure glow over the speaking Squadron Commander. 'Greetings pilots," he spoke, his voice registering a familiar squadron pride, "Look lively, and stoic. Now, onto the briefing...'"

Squadron News

As usual, I hope this report finds you well. This is our eighth week together, two months more or less. I'm glad to say it was one of excellent activity, with flight from almost every member and a strong showing in the Sovereign SP Ladder competition. Of particular note is LT Hunter, who flew a great deal of battles and completed the TIE mission for the competition, earning a high score in the process. Well done, my friend. Additionally, Flight II had a great amount of activity this week, and I'd like to commend LT Q'jira and LT Arcanos for their work. Of course, I must also mention LT Coldsteel's efforts as well, and frankly, everybody just did wonderfully this week. You've impressed me again, I have to admit.

Now that the fourth week of this competition is concluded, we begin our newest endeavor in the squadron competition being launched today: Operation Yakside: Part I - A Little Help From My Friends. All the details you need to compete are below, and I hope we can all have fun in the first phase of this two part competition that will cover all of the month of April.

Also of note is that, while OPS still seems to be up in the air, a good deal of medals got sent out in the meantime, and these included four for our squadron, which you can see below. Congratulations to all the winners. I'd also like to note that the Orders and Regulations for our squadron have changed this week as well. Only one aspect has changed a great deal; the rest are just typos, rewording, etc. The first, and only really important one, is that I'm now asking that all activity be sent to me before midnight on Friday. The reason for this is that I have to submit this report to number of different formats, and having to append or delete activity reports due to last minute changes can be a lot of work. Rest assured, however, anything you get in after the fact will be noted in the next report.

In other things, we've seen a lot of Roster changes this week. None have been transfers in or out, which is a good thing, but they have instead been modifications to our current structure. LT Hunter has been promoted to the position of Flight Leader of Flight III, "Cantara," for his meritorious service in the name of Beta. It would go without saying that I have been impressed with his activity lately, and I have absolute faith in his ability to do a great job. I'm glad to see our Missile Boats active once again. To ensure that he wasn't alone there, I've moved LT Viktor Trollstein down to the spot of 3-2, to serve as his Flight Member. Finally, to tidy up the roster, I moved LT Tirna Q'jira up to the 2-2 spot formerly occupied by Hunter. This leaves us with solid members in each flight, and it also paves the way for a little more competition between flights. ;)

Finally, Beta Echelon has been updated several times over this week, and the log of Beta's first squadron meeting is now online for your browsing in the "Quotes" section. Several other minor changes have been effected, and progress continues on the "History / Canon" section. Additionally, LCM J'Lek Arcanos has informed me that he is working on a new citation based monthly activity, which will be featured hopefully in the next report. In the meantime, let's keep it up, Yaks.

Operation Yakside: Part I - A Little Help From My Friends (In Progress: 4/2/2005 - 4/15/2005)
Participants: All pilots of Beta Squadron except her CMDR.
Medals to be Awarded: Iron Star: Bronze Ribbon to the writer of the best entry.
Missions/Battles: TIE-TC 31, TIE-TC 36, TIE-TC 38, TIE-TC 57, TIE-TC 58, TIE-TC 59.
Instructions: http://www.ehtiecorps.org/competitions/details.asp?ID=1878.
    From CM Serin Jansj's Details:

With the introduction of our latest member, we've lost a fair amount of our citations. Unfortunately, your CMDR can't remedy this himself because he's flown most of the battles. In the past, however, he's gotten by with the aid of his pilots, and he'd like to ask for your assistance once more. This is why he's launching Operation Yakside, a two competition project to claim some new citations and have fun in the process during the month of April. The first section will be the "reconnaisance" of the battles, and the second section the completion of them by the squadron. This competition, "A Little Help From My Friends," is the first phase.

In this competition, each pilot will select one of the battles listed above and claim it for the duration of the competition (one pilot per battle). After doing so, the pilot should fly the battle in its entirety. Afterwards, the pilot should write a brief summary of the battle and submit it to his CMDR along with his pilot file. The catch is that the summary must be from the first person, essentially a diary of sorts, or a log, of each mission in the battle, detailing what happened during it in a fun, fictitious style, with an epilogue. The Squadron Commander will read the entries and judge them by style, description, and effort. The best work will be awarded an Iron Star: Bronze Ribbon, posted on the Beta Message Board, and published in the fiction section of our website. The battles used from this competition will be reused in "A Grim Pastorale."

    From MAJ Brin Chaser's Announcement:

Following the success of the Torus Trooper Competition (ID 1776) the Wing Commander has augmented the simulators with a new piece of software. The pilots think it's a bowling simulator. To the Wing Commander, it's the perfect way to access pilot accuracy and control. Pilots need to send a screenshot of their results to the Wing Commander to be considered for the reward, as this is a pilot evaluation exercise.

Weekly Activity

For this week, I'd like to propose that you participate in our squadron competition, Operation Yakside (see above for details). It's very easy to do, and it's a fine opportunity to get an IS-BR. I'll keep an eye out for your submissions. Have fun. :)

Otherwise, have a good week. That's not a recommendation. That's an order. :)

The Yak's Mouth

Unfortunately, I was unable to note any amusing nonprivate conversation this week. I was involved in a rather humorous private conversation this week, but sadly, the other party did not want to put it in "The Yak's Mouth" so, that's the way things are. :P If you have some you'd like to contribute for the future, feel free to email me at jansj@comcast.net and I'll make sure to corrupt the others with its presence. ;)

Pun of the Week

Things were getting desperate for the members of the jungle expedition. They had been travelling in ever narrower circles for three days, their supplies were running low and the helpers they hired insisted on returning to their homes. Everyone thought that they would be lost for ever.

Happily, one of the natives offered a solution. He held up for all to see a large jungle insect which looked like some sort of mantis.

"The insect always points North," he said. "I will leave you now but if you follow the pointing insect, you can find your way out without me."

The explorers were happy to follow the insect. Indeed, it maintained a steady heading at first and they seemed to be making progress. Then a day passed. Then another one passed. The huge insect began to twitch and shake ever more erratically. They knew that they were lost.

"Forget it!" one of them shouted in frustration. "This insect is mad! It's insane I tell you! It points every which way and we're lost. This is hopeless!"

"How can you tell that?" the others asked. "How can the insect be mad?"

"Can't you all see?" he cried. "It's non-compass-mantis."

The Last Word

This week was a fine rebound from last week's to say the least, and we're carving a niche for ourselves in Wing I. We're distinguishing ourselves more every day, and I'd like to commend every one of you for your efforts. Wing I is slowly fighting its way back to the top, and we're a part of that in our efforts. I hope this week will bring new establishments, especially with our new squadron competition going and a new flight leader. I know I promised a competition for some time, and I've finally come through. I wasn't sure if we could sustain a squadron competition a few weeks earlier, but now I have a great deal of confidence and pride in you all. Again, I'm here you need anything. We all have our differences, but I'm proud of each and every member in this squadron, full stop. I look to the following days with eagerness and curiosity.

For this week, however, it's your commander signing out.

"Brother, brother, brother, there's far too many of you dying..."

In sincerity,
Serin "Yakman" Jansj
