Firebird PatchFROM STRYKER'S DESKFirebird Patch
Not for the first time, Stryker wondered if he was getting too old for this; the inter-squadron competition using the Combat Operations Office's new linked simulators was hotting up, and representatives from Firebird Squadron had just faced off against the team from Theta Squadron, widely considered to be one of the favourites to win, and  for that match consisting of no pilots with a rank lower than General.

The first round had been tense to the point of needless stress; the six pilots battled for the middle ground in a narrow spacelane choked with debris. A swirling vortex surrounded the tunnel, entering it meant certain death. Evenly-matched in terms of skill if not rank, the two teams had fought valiantly until the timer ran out, neither side getting a clear advantage over the other. When the timer reached zero, the scores had just become tied and triggered a condition none of the pilots had been aware of - a 'next kill wins' sudden death scenario. A frantic panic had ensued, and Stryker had prepared to resign himself to a well-fought loss when the simulation ended with Firebird ahead by one kill.

Stryker's hands had been shaking as the screen went blank, more adrenaline had flooded his body during a simple simulation than active combat, and he'd remained jittery well into the second round where the Firebird pilots demonstrated their intimate knowledge of Rebel craft to the detriment of the Admirals on the other side. Though they were now leading the competition, Stryker worried - he was proud of his accomplishments but did not want to succumb to ego as he might have done as a young man. There were still matches to be played, and an upset at any point would bring the house of cards he had built crashing down around him.

Flexing his fingers and rolling his shoulders, Stryker clambered back into the simulator; he needed to continue honing his skills if he was to lead his squadron to overall victory, and there were still new skills to be learned and perfected before the end.
Firebird PatchSQUADRON NEWSFirebird Patch
How is it March already? This is the start of my sixth month in command of Firebird Squadron, and though there have been a few motivational hiccups on my part over the last half a year, I've never seriously considered walking away - that's down to you guys, and for that I thank you all!

February's MSEs have been written and passed on to The Powers That Be; so far High Admiral Dempsey and Admiral Prower have commented, so it's just down to Vice Admiral Clark to make his comments before I can get them recommended. Nine of our eleven pilots are receiving medals of some form this month, well done everyone!

Foghorn Leghorn (Firebird Team 1) is due to take on the representatives from Tempest Squadron tomorrow. Our games against Theta were tense and required our finest flying, but we prevailed following an incredibly tense first round that went to a Sudden Death scenario that nobody knew existed in Squadrons! ChickenHawk (Firebird Team 2) is still waiting for their match with represenatives from Eagle Squadron.

TCiB challenges for March have been announced: TIE-TC 76, XvT-TC 23, and XWA-TC 8. Firebird Squadron is currently in third place overall, and I have somehow found myself individually tied for third place with Lieutenant Colonel Phalk Sturm of Tempest Squadron.

I think any of us who play Squadrons have noticed that Dogfight matchmaking has changed and that running into and being stomped on by premade 5-stacks after an eight minute wait is not a great way to play a game. Therefore, every other Sunday, I will be hosting a get-together for Challenge pilots to get some friendly custom games going - it'll be a social event where we can chat, have fun, and win some LoCs - previous experience or high level not required.

Finally, and embarassingly (for him), this Sunday is CM Travis 'TI-40026' Cook's 33rd Birthday! I am expecting everyone who knows him to spam him incessantly with birthday wishes, funny gifs, and the like!

Firebird PatchCLOSING COMMENTSFirebird Patch
February was a good month, for the most part, and I'm hoping March will be as successful. We're in the final month for the Chalquilla Cup, and Fleet Admiral Plif is due to start Exercise (Re)Mobilisation 3 in the near future. I'd also like to see more involvement with TCiB this month if possible; we might not be High Score hunters, but we're one of the more active squadrons in the fleet and through participation alone we might be able to stage an upset!
