EH Security Office Report

Security Office News

Well, another slow week for the Security Office. I haven't recieved a single complaint about anyone, which I take as a good sign. As always, please follow the Codes of Conduct; they are to be enforced in every subgroup. No exceptions.

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) will begin a major crackdown of pirated goods next week. They will be going after everything and everyone they can. If you are using a P2P service such as Kazaa or LimeWire, you risk being slapped with a large fine and/or prison time. Everytime you access their networks, you are distributing your computer's IP address (your unique identification number across the internet) to a lot of people, law enforcement in particular.

I highly suggest you remove all file sharing programs from your computer. It really isn't worth the risk of getting some of these fines just to see a pirated movie (which usually has crappy quality anyway). For more information you can visit their website by clicking here (opens a new window).

The Security Office website should have some content added to it within the next fortnight, so check that out. Oddly enough, I'm not that much into the Matrix now ...

My office is always open for business. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the above information, please feel free to contact me at so@emperorshammer.org and I will respond usually within twelve hours at the most. You can also catch me on Internet Relay Chat (IRC) as `Vlad, `Vlad`, or RA_Xavier.

2004 Security Office Tasks

-Internet security matters.
The latest virus threats can be found online here (opens a new window). It also provides documents on new computer threats, fixes, and other useful information.

-Faster timeframe for issues to be resolved, brought to the HCI, etc.
My queue is still clear. No word on the HCI's end.

-Revise Articles of War and Bylaws in consultation with relevant parties.
This project is apparantly suspended until further notice.

Security Information Nexus

This week the product is Spybot - Search & Destroy from PepiMK Software. Similar to Ad-Aware Personal SE, this utility will remove that pesky spyware from your computer easily and efficiently. I've heard that this program is a bit more thorough at cleaning systems, although it comes with the price of a little less friendly user interface. I highly suggest you run this program (or Ad-aware) once a week to keep your system running at peak efficiency.
