Security Office News

I have been appointed as the new Security Officer for the Emperor's Hammer. I'd like to thank Grand Admiral Ronin and Sector Admiral Astatine in trusting me with the position and the duties that are involved with it. Hopefully it will be a long and satisfactory tenure. Please bear with me because this is a long report (future ones will be much shorter) and I want to establish a few key points.

A new Security Office website is currently under development by a friend of mine. I'm sure he'll do excellent work as he always does. The new website will be a nexus of information for EH members containing the club Bylaws, Codes of Conduct, Articles of War, Security Updates/Virus Alerts, and other critical information that you should know. It should be fully up and operational within the next week.

The positions of Command Attache and Security Office Assistants are not open for applications at this time. Asking about them will basically get you zero chance of obtaining them if/when I do open the position(s) for applications.

I would like to remind all EH personnel that absolutely no members of the rogue Dark Brotherhood (rDB) are to be allowed in EH communication channels. Failure to follow this regulation can result in some serious trouble for you. So if a known rDB member enters your IRC channel, you better kick/ban him immediatly. I have eyes and ears all over the fleet and there is little that goes on that I don't (or won't) know about. I understand that some people do not like this, but unfortunetly rules are rules. Please adhere to them at all times.

And of course you can't be a member of both the rDB and EH. Less than one week into the job and two rDB/TC members have been thrown out the airlock with another in the works and yet one more under observation. Don't worry, I will get to you eventually.

Another reminder for you is that when you wear that EH tag, you are representing every single member of the club from the newest Flight Member to Grand Admiral Ronin himself. I will not tolerate the EH name being dragged through the mud anywhere by any of our members; whether it be on a public Jedi Academy server, the Microsoft Gaming Zone rooms, Burnout's 24/7 Free Worlds server, or Star Wars Galaxies. I have little patience for those who tarnish this club's reputation so consider this your first and only warning.

2004 Security Office Tasks

-Internet security matters.
At the end of each report I will try and showcase ways to help protect your home computer from viruses, hackers, and whatnot. Granted I'm no computer genius, but after a full year of computer science, I do know the ropes a fair bit.

-Faster timeframe for issues to be resolved, brought to the HCI, etc.
Definetly doing that so far.

-Revise Articles of War and Bylaws in consultation with relevant parties
Currently sifting through those carefully. Probably will take them one by one and discuss them with the Fleet Commander, Executive Officer and the High Court.

Security Information Nexus

This week I am showcasing the one single website everyone should know about; assuming you're running Windows: Windows Update. This automated website contains security patches for your operating system, along with critical updates to the Microsoft family of programs including Windows Media Player.

Service Pack 2 for Windows XP is out and all Windows XP users should download and install it. In addition to removing XP Home from my load screen, it installed an interesting firewall and pop-up blocker. I'm not liking the firewall too much but the pop-up blocker is really great on default.

Note: All Windows 2000 and XP users must be logged on as the computer's Administration to access Windows Update.
