Security Office News

A lot of things happened in the past week. I'm sure most of you are aware of all the crap going on in the EH recently. Things will die down again no doubt but until then ... behave. Thorin Oakenshield is not to be in any EH communication channel ... no exceptions. I don't care what loophole you want to use on me, I will not tolerate it. A lot of people saying I am too strict, that I'm not fair by kicking him out of EH channels. Let me just say that I make exceptions for no one. If one person gets special treatment, then everyone wants it. Not gonna' happen on my shift.

This past week I've had to do a lot of babysitting on IRC, handing out at least half a dozen bans in two hour period. I am counting on the Flag Staff/Channel Admin to kick/ban any members who do not belong in EH channels. While I am not the Communications Officer (COMM), it seems like I am having to do some of that position's duties. This should not be the case - If you are caught with ops in a channel with an expelled member present, you may face charges. You have been warned.

Also, you don't need my permission to kick/ban someone. During the recent "angry/disgruntled ex-EH member" IRC 'invasion' earlier this week, I was recieving PMs galore while playing Free Worlds from Channel Ops asking me to come to their channel to get rid of that person. I assure you that you can kick them yourselves ... you don't need my permission to. So do it.

I will be on a sort of Leave of Absence between November 13th and 27th. This is rifle season (for deer) in Michigan and I will be running between school, work, and hunting camp during these two weeks. I should be checking my e-mail at least once every three days (probably two). If any emergencies occur, you can always contact the Executive Officer.

The positions of Command Attache and Security Office Assistants are not open for applications at this time. Asking about them will basically get you zero chance of obtaining them if/when I do open the position(s) for applications. It's possible I may be hiring a pair of Security Office Assistants (SOA) to help monitor IRC and various messageboards when I'm not present, but we'll see.

2004 Security Office Tasks

-Internet security matters.
New product this week. Watching for major virus alerts. Always remember to keep your Virus scanners up-to-date and your programs patched via Microsoft Windows Update.

-Faster timeframe for issues to be resolved, brought to the HCI, etc.
New case being sent to the HCI this weekend.

-Revise Articles of War and Bylaws in consultation with relevant parties.
First Article of War will be sent out Sunday.

Security Information Nexus

Protecting your computer is very important in this day and age. Everyone should be running at least a basic firewall on their computer. With Service Pack 2 of Windows XP, you can enable a firewall which seems spry enough. It is a bit annoying at first which is why I recommend ZoneAlarm. This product is perfect for newbies which can set up your firewall via an easy to use wizard. It has held up to basically all tests given and is very user friendly. I suggest downloading this if you don't have a firewall already.
