COMM Report #10

Greetings from COMM-opolis. I hope everyone had a great holiday.

OK, a few things to go over in this report. First let me start out by apologizing for the tardiness of this report... it's been a hectic weekend, especially with all the crazy things going on with IRC lately. Which is a perfect segueway... (this is important)

COMM OFFICE IRC ADVISORY:

Do NOT run //$decode commands on IRC! These are backdoor commands run through mIRC that can cause you quite a bit of problems if you fall for any tricks involving //$decode commands. For a more technical description, here's how HA Astatine described how //$decode works...

"Basically, this is the latest in a long line of exploits that rely on human stupidity. $decode is an mIRC command that decodes the characters listed between the brackets [listed in the command], using the key of m. The first half of this decodes to a series of mIRC commands that writes a script to display the messages that the sender has sent to the "infected" person to a file. The second half loads this file into the scripts part of mIRC. The script relies a trigger that is set when a channel op is present when the "infected" person joins that channel. Apart from that it doesn't seem to have any other effects"

If you ever fall for a //$decode trick, you may notice mIRC not loading properly anymore... here is how to rememdy that:

1- Delete the file "Ä"
2- Exit mIRC then restart the program

Now that I'm back and unpacked and settled into my place at school, expect my activity to jump back up again... I plan to have a CA hired by week's end, and some projects unveiled by next meeting. Congrats to everyone who got big fancy medals or promoted this past week... it feels nice, don't it? :P Past that, that's about all for this time. Thanks to Ast for providing such an insightful explanation about mIRC's newest "Press ALT+F4 for ops!" trick. Thanks for reading!
