SCO Report # 30 (2001-03-25)

This report was submitted by FA Kermee

Greets,
Despite a having a rather hectic week with RL (collusion between Uni lecturers lead to a number of assessment items being due at once, grr...) its still been a moderately productive week in the Science Office.

1. Fleet Manual: After some long thinking & coding sessions I believe I have solved to single major scripting problem left in the Fleet Manual and the only thing left that was inhibiting new data entry. The problem related to the hierarchical data structure I'm using combined with having multiple versions in the same database, the solution I have now doesn't require massive duplicate data entry for new versions of the manual and allows editing of parts of versions without disrupting what's currently available for display. It also solves the same problems in terms of future enhancements currently envisioned. Now this is fixed I should be able to precede with some large amounts of data entry quite quickly.

Of course, I would be completely amiss to think my SQL skills where capable of producing something that both worked and was [processor time] efficient, as such I'm running an open challenge for anyone who wants to try and optimise things a bit. For details and copies of the statements e-mail me at kermee@softhome.net. Its basically a lump of indexing code that's returns a set of distinct ids after checking a series of conditions up the data tree structure.

Additionally, It appears the current estimate of mid/late march for the next update to the Fleet Manual will be missed. I'm going to refrain on setting any new estimate for the moment, suffice to say that it is a top priority.

2. New Experimental Patch: A new experimental patch, the Hand of Fate Gunboat, has been added to the experimental patch archive. This is a new ship for TIE CD created by MAJ Mick Emrys of Theta squadron as an enhanced gunboat.

As a reminder, you can always find the latest news on Star Wars Games, Patches & Science Office happenings at the SCO web page (http://sco.emperorshammer.ca). If you've found newer, submit it as news!

Lastly, congrats to AD Slade on CGM of the Fringe.. Hail Jamie!
