COMM Report #27
June 3, 2002

News:

- Great news this week! Our MoC plan has been approved! Here are the basics of the plan as determined by myself and FA Howlader:

1- The system is hereby moved from overall post counts to weekly post counts. All the overall post counts were lost in the crash, and it was judged to be bad policy to strip all the people of their old MoC's and start over.

2- We will hand-count the posts. Weekly hand counts are easier than overall post hand-counts, and will DEFINITELY cut down on MoC's awarded for spam.

3- We will award MoC's for every EH message board, not just the main forum. This includes Subgroups and the TIE Corps. This is done so that now all SG'ers and TCMB posters will get their due MoC's.

4- Due to the heavy load of all this, I will be hiring 4-5 COMM Assistants to form an "MoC Committee," and it would be their job to count all the posts on all the EH message boards, and then send myself and the SG medal officer the lists of MoC's that their members had earned. (See below if you wish to apply for a newly-opened COMMA position)

5- Post counts would work as follows:

MoC-BoC - 10 posts/week
MoC-SoC - 20 posts/week
MoC-GoC - 50 posts/week
MoC-PoC - 100 posts/week
MoC-DoC - 250 posts/week

- Some sad news. As COL Osan`gar was promoted to CHS, we lost a fine member of our office. Good luck Osan`gar!
- Right then, about new COMMA's:

1- First I will be taking applications for head COMMA, who will oversee the MoC Committee. This is going to be an important job, and should the Head COMMA do a good job, I will see to it that he/she is well-rewarded.

2- If you wish to be a member of the MoC committee, you can also apply to be head COMMA, and if you don't make it, I will certainly keep your application on file and will consider you for a part of the MoC committee.

3- I would like to have formal applications: nothing informal, excessively humorous, or downright insulting. (last time I had an applicant say that a monkey could be COMMA, so why couldn't he? BAD IDEA, folks!)

4- Why apply? COMMA is a good tool for advancement. The last few COMMA's have moved directly into positions like CA:RO, LA, CA:COMM, and CHS. I even used to be a COMMA! :P

- It's finals week again for me, COMM/AD Motti. I will be partially unavailable until Wednesday night (6/5), at which point I will be COMPLETELY unavailable until I return home to Cleveland on Thursday night (6/6).
- The COMM Office officially supports England in their bid to win the World Cup. :P

New MoC's:

We now have a new MoC system, so as soon as an MoC staff is hired,
you will start getting your WEEKLY MoC's!

COMM Product Review:

This Week's Product: EH Java IRC

Highs: Not many. Ability to connect on the fly, ability to login to X. Ability to kick and be opped.

Lows: NO GUI to speak of. No right clicks, everything is done by typing the commands which some of us remember and use daily. Extremely limited server list. No Onotice function. Outdated Java script.

Overall:
EHIRC Webchat is somewhat like lies. Nobody really wants to, but some people are stuck using them in sticky situations when nothing else will work. This product needs a major overhaul to be deemed even fruitful. Then only bonus is it's on the fly connectibility, and that's somewhat lessened by the fact it took me 5 or 6 tries on different servers. Oh yes, no auto-jump from a server should it refuse your connection.

Rating: 2 out of 10 COMM Stars
