ISDII Relentless Report # 7 (2003-06-22)

This report was submitted by RA Jahan Kalar

Greetings and welcome to another Relentless Ship Report. I have a few
things I'd like to talk about, so sit down, grab a cold one, a listen up for
a few minutes. Nothing too long or stressful on your overworked brains,
just some stuff I'm sure you all want to hear about, and some stuff that you
may or may not want to hear about. That last stuff, I've taken the liberty
of chucking out before I send this report out, so it's all good stuff.

Recruitment
Since my last report, we are down three more pilots. This leaves us with
about a squadron and a half worth of pilots. If that sounds low, that's
because it is. Now you all know that I don't get too hung up on numbers,
but with more pilots we are able to do more and with a wider variety of
people, there's always someone willing to do something that needs doing.
This is not where I want us to be, and I don't think this is where you all
want to be either. We are now the smallest Wing in the TC, and that is not
a distinction I plan on having us hold for long.

So, here's the plan. I'm going to pick two people to help with recruitment.
One will be in charge of the efforts to help cadets finish their training.
Many cadets join and then don't finish, I think this is a great opportunity
to motivate cadets to finish and hopefully they will join up with us. The
other person will be in charge of efforts to recruit reserves pilots back
into active duty. This is not about harassing the reserves pilots, but I'm
sure each of you know a few people who used to be active and then quit, and
maybe you could convince them to come back.

I'll be taking applications for those two positions until the end of the day
Wednesday. The general idea is that the position will be as open ended as
possible with as little interference from me or anyone else as we can
possibly manage. It's a great opportunity to run recruiting the way you
think it should be run, and hopefully you can get some results. The
challenge is there, who's willing to take it?

RelStats
Now, while I don't plan on having such a small ship forever, I think it's
important to show everyone that even though we are small, we are active. To
that end, I'm working with Lohr to help RelStats make a comeback. It might
be a little different, but the idea of a public website that lists the
activity of everyone on the Relentless is what it will be based on. So stay
tuned, and remember, what you do (or don't do) is going "On the Record" :)

Other Stuff
You know what I've found to the single greatest feeling in the world?
Proving someone, even if it is yourself, wrong in their assessment of you.
The world is full of people who tell you you can't do something, you aren't
smart enough, you aren't strong enough, you don't have what it takes.
Sometimes that person is even yourself. So you know how I deal with that?
Prove 'em wrong. Do what "can't be done". Accomplish what they said you
couldn't. I say this because I had a moment of self doubt today, I'm sure
you've all experienced the same thing. But then I realized that that only
makes winning better, victory sweeter. It's like when you are dead tired at
the end of a long run, and your body is screaming for you to stop and you
don't think you can take another step. But instead of doing that, you suck
it up and run one more mile. I got to tell you, nothing feels quite as good
as doing that.

Why am I tell you all this? Because I hope that next time someone says that
you can't do something, or you feel some self doubt, you think about this
and do it anyways. There's no better feeling in the world than being able
to say, "So I can't do it, huh? Well what's up now?", even if it's only to
yourself :)

That's all for now...until next time, shoot straight and faster than they
do.
