Wing III Report # 4 (2001-10-23)

This report was submitted by LC Jahan Kalar

Greetings and welcome to another Wing III Report. Last report didn't have all that many exciting things in it, and I was hoping that this past week would be more eventfull. And I got my wish. Lots of new things happened, so let's get down to it. And sorry for not making the meeting on Sunday, I was at an Autocross event here in Iowa.

Position Changes and Promotions
Big news, new Daleth Commander. Please welcome Commander Autoris Maximus, the new Daleth Squadron Commander! Commander Maximus as I have been working on something already, for more on that see below.
Daleth has a new pilot, Commander Neo Rising. Welcome to Wing III, join the insanity.

Medals and Awards
LCM Ace Hobbes has received an IS-BW for getting second place overall in the Wing III Summer Bash. There is a reason that this is only an IS-BW instead of an IS-SR and that it took so long to award it. The Training Officer approved the competition with an IS-SR for second place overall, but Silver things cannot be awarded for second place in Wing size competitions. So, unfortunitly, an IS-SR was not approved. But an IS-BW isn't half bad either, and belated congrats to Ace.

IWATS
LT Ian Khorst completed AIM and ICQ.
LT Sam Booker completed RT.
LT Strathaven completed GFX
LT Maw'la completed RT.

Wing III News
Of course, big news, Daleth has a new Commander. Commander Autoris Maximus now has the job, and he is going to make Daleth the drinking powerhouse of the fleet. At least that's what I assume based on his blood alcohol level when I promoted him. In fact, I think the new Daleth motto should be "We're not as think as you drunk we are." But enough with the jokes, I think he will do a really great job and I'm glad Daleth now has a commander. Besides, everyone knows LC Marden is the (milk) drinking powerhouse of the fleet :)
Commander Var Zoraan is another year older. This means he has to act more mature (heh, right). Happy birthday, Var!
On November 1st a new competition will start. Can't tell you what yet, but get ready.
New Competition starting very soon. Mascot Power Battles! Each Wing has a mascot (yes, us too, read about it below). Instead of me resaying it, just read what COL Ford Prefect (the creator of this comp) said. I'll tell you all when it officially starts.
Miscellaneous Details: Each wing must first decide on a mascot. Their mascot will represent the wing in a free-for-all against the various mascots of the other wings in the Sovereign Mascot Power Battles! Throughout six competition rounds the wing's mascots will battle amongst each other in a vicious melee to determine the Sov's top wing.

Fiction, graphics, trivia, TIE, XWA (SP) and TIE Mission design will comprise the rounds. In order to save time and keep excitement running, these events will run concurrently - for the most part, one event will be announced, with two weeks given to complete the event, then the next week, another two-week event will be announced, and so on, and so forth.

The basic premise is this: All Sov mascots are in a free-for-all against each other to determine who's the top mascot, and, hence, the best wing. In order to be able to 'fight', however, they must first draw their strength from something. In short, the wing with the most points in a
category ensures victory for their mascot in that round. At the end of all six rounds, the total score of each wing will be added up, and the highest total wins the whole she-bang.

Like the BHG KAGs, scoring goes like so: Each event will start with a base points level of 1 - 30. In, say, a fiction event, the pilot who submits what is judged to be the best work of fiction out of all other submissions is awarded 30 points, which will go to their personal total and the wing's overall total. Second place gets 29 points, third 28 points, and so on, and so forth. If there are less than 30 submissions, then the ceiling of thirty points max will be kept. If there are more than thirty submissions, the number of points will vary as to the number of participants - for example, if, say, 50 people participate in an event, then the top scorer receives 50 points, second 49, third 48, all the way down to the last-place pilot, who will receive 1 point.

Judging and Awards:
The judging will be down by the Sovereign flag staff. RA Proton will either select a WC to judge a category or allow them to volunteer for a category. It is the job of the judge to announce the event, evaluate and grade all submissions, and release the results (as well as wing totals). Also, at the end of each round, the appropriate judge will write a brief summary of the mascot fight that has taken place under their event through the viewpoint of their wing's mascot and include it with the release of the results of their event.

Awards:
At the end of the six categories, the overall totals for each wing will be announced. The winning wing will have their mascot honored as the head honcho of all other Sov mascots, and the prestige of knowing that they, in essence, are the best wing on the Sov. Awards individually will also be handed out. The top finisher in each category will receive an IS-GR or GW, second place IS-SR or SW, and third place an IS-BR or BW. In addition to these awards, a standing will be kept of how many points each individual pilot has earned throughout the competition, and the top finishers in this category will be recognized, though not necessarily with medals. Individual WCs may also
recommend pilots for merit medals for extraordinary participation and effort in the overall competition.

Schedule:
Day 1: Trivia released
Day 7: XWA released, Trivia due
Day 14: Graphics released
Day 21: XWA due, fiction released
Day 28: Graphics due, TIE Mission Design released
Day 35: Fiction due, TIE released
Day 42: TIE Mission Design due
Day 49: TIE due

As you can see, the competition will take roughly six weeks to complete. If necessary, the timetable can be shortened so that both the flying events have only one week allowed for their
completion. Also, note that trivia is only one week long, so as to ensure that people won't just go out and ravage through their library for answers to all the questions :P For trivia grading, also, the time in which the answers are received are part of the grading process, as someone who does the answers off the top of their head (or looks 'em up really quick :P) and sends them in
first should get more points than someone who spends the entire week looking the answers up.
Our Mascot is Sergeant Bash the JudoYoda. Although the Jedi Master Yoda was thought to be the only member of his race, there was in fact at least one other Yoda. Sergeant Bash chose not to follow the path of the Jedi, he instead decided to fight in ultimate style fighting matches for money to build what he calls "the ultimate weapon." Although currently in the employ of Wing III, Sergeant Bash is only loyal to himself and we never know what he will do next. He also has a fondness for beating up LTs and SLs (and anyone else) that makes fun of his size. While he pretends to be offended by these insults, he actually just wants a excuse to dispense some mayhem. Which is why he hangs out around cantinas looking for fights. He is younger than the Jedi Yoda and has a
full head of hair and bright green skin. He is currently in the brig for what can only be described as "hitting the Wing Commander in the face" but will hopefully promise to behave so he can compete in this competition.
Daleth Flight III has the new motto of Prepare to experiance the taste of death!
Daleth also has a new webpage at http://www25.brinkster.com/autoris/
Daleth also has a new message board at http://ub2.homepagetools.com/Autoris/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowBoard&Board=Daleth&Idle=10&Sort=0&Orde
Commander Maximus has certainly been a busy Commander.
IRC news stuff. Our channel is now getting several changes. First of all, we have Darknite (a bot that does, among other things, trivia) running off of my dedicated server that also hosts the Wing III website. The server is still under a pretty light load right now, if you can think of another Wing related use for it, let me know. It on all the time, and it's running Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and I have a really fast internet connection, so we might as well make use of it. So let's hear those ideas. Second, I am trying to officially register our channel (#Wing_III) with Cservice (the controlling group of Undernet). But I need you to send me your Cservice names to support the registering. I have several names already, but I need more, and if you didn't send it already please do so. If you don't have a Cservice username, you can register at http://www.cservice.undernet.org. If you want to support registering the channel, register and/or send me your username. Thanks.
