The parade of newly assigned Samekh and Sadhe sublieutenants stopped near the long bar in the Sovereign cantina and began watching the odd tableau.
Lieutenant Colonels Gen Es'mith and Sickman sat easily at the bar, quaffing Correlian ale and chortling about their plans to use Aylin and Sadhe squadron funds to have padded multimedia lounge chairs installed in the Wing V section of the cantina for themselves. The SLs heard the two veteran CMDRs derisively referring to Major Proton, their wing commander but a flag officer at a lesser rank than they. Es'mith also was talking about his "lizard," and laughing explosively.
The sublieutenants looked several feet behind the two LCs, and the Daedalus graduates were smart enough to be overcome with a sense of foreboding.
Major Proton stood grinning evilly at the backs of the LCs. He was flanked by two huge women in total stormtrooper battle gear. They held massive maces with practiced familiarity.
A military probe droid hovered to one side of the trio. At blinding speed, a red-hot cutting blade was whirling from one of the droid's upper appendages.
"Snippy, remember, your assignment is the 'lizard,' " Proton hissed at the droid. The machine warbled in excitement.
Proton looked one after the other at Jaded Strumpet and Candyland.
"Enjoy yourselves, my assistants," Proton said, raising his head and laughing maliciously as the trio advanced toward the bar.

Hello Wing V,
As your Doc, I thought I would send out an email directly to all of you in
regards to this topic going around right now about elevating the FL's to the
same level of CMDR's.
Having served for a long time within the ranks of Wing V, and promoted
through those same ranks to the position I now hold, I have had the
opportunity to gain some insight into what a FL should and shouldn't be. As
you've probably read by my statements published in the circulation of
comments so far, I am not a supporter of the FL doing BSF's. This is not to
say that I am against a FL doing more to help ease burden of their CMDR
within their squads, but rather there are distinctions between the CMDR and
the FL.
As a FL your primary responsibilities are outlined clearly in the OPS Manual.
This is not to say that you can't do more to motivate and elevate your
squadron to higher standards. However, there are some CMDR's that would
prefer that a FL know their place. Fortunately for everyone in Wing V, this
is not the case, as we are a close brotherhood of pilots that believe in the
success of every pilot.
So here are some ideas and suggestions that I can impart to all the FL's from
my experience as a successful FL while in Sadhe. The first thing you want to
do is to communicate at least once, if not twice a week with your FM's. This
way they know you are actually interested in them, and it also provides you
with the opportunity to find out why they might not be as active as they
should be. Secondly, you might want to tryout the idea of a weekly flight
report to start getting the feel for what a CMDR does. Be sure and CC: this
to your CMDR, so that he/she will have a much better idea of what is going on
in your flight group. Communication is the key to a successful squadron, and
makes all the difference.
Some other things that LC Sickman and I worked hard on doing for instance was
a run-on story for the squadron. This helped to motivate the pilots to be
more active and creative. Recruiting is a big MUST for all FL's if your
squadron is to stay active and at a full complement. You must be willing to
do more than just send a friendly letter to a recruit that says "HI". The key
to good recruiting is to send a follow-up letter when they complete a level
of training. This way they will start to believe that you are interested in
them for more than just a name in your ranks. By staying in contact with
these potential recruits, and aiding them through their transition through
training, you are building a motivated pilot that will be of a huge benefit
to your squadron.
These are but a few suggestions to help out your squadron and your CMDR.
There are many more, and I could go on forever pointing it out. Remember that
they key to being a good FL, and a future CMDR is to excel beyond the
requirements for the position. You are the first rung in the command ladder
to helping to build a better EH!
