Athena Report # 3 (2004-05-09)

This report was submitted by COL Josh Popelka

Athena Squadron Report for April 25th through May 9th 2004.

Hey everyone! Time for another Athena Squadron Report! I'm sorry this report is late, the last two weeks were very interesting for me, to say the least. But all that's over now and it's time to go to work. Got a little bit of news to cover, so let's do it!

SQUADRON NEWS

Now that things have settled down for me, I'm ready to run and participate in an internal squadron competition. Here's what I'm envisioning: Pick an XWA battle (suggestions are welcome here), take a week to fly it and the pilot with the highest score wins an IS-BW. I'll get around to entering the competition into the TO for approval when I'm done writing this report.

We have our new name. YAY!! Now that that's out of the way for the moment, I'll start working on a squadron webpage. Keep it simple for the moment. But I'll need content from anyone that's willing to send me some. I've got some fiction myself, but it's all extremely old and it might take me a while to get around to something befitting our new squadron.

SSL R5 is on! Missions to be flown are TIE-FREE #213 "Nu Squadron -- Minos Cluster", XvT-FREE #11 "The Test of Skill" and XWA-FREE #108 "Operation Divide and Conquer". They're due in to me by the 14th, but I'm not sure if I'll have internet right away when I get home, so send them to LC Guthwulf as well.

Hmm, that's all I can think of for Squadron News.

WING NEWS

Promotion time for Ares Squadron Commander Ryan Chi'Cath! Congratulations to our newly minted Major! Let's go do some MAJOR drinking! (OK, that one's been done to death, but I can't think of any MAJOR Major Jokes at the moment.) Hopefully you recover quickly from the MAJOR drain on your wallet! (Heh, that's a little better in my humble opinion.)

From the latest Wing Report:

Competitions

Birth of Wing VII Contest started on May 1st. There will be a
fiction division a run-on division and an open division. Thank AD Proton
for getting this going. He and will be the judges for this:

Fiction division: Write a story about the formation, activation and
operation of Wing VII. Run-on division: Participate in the run-on on the
SSSD Sov MB about the first operations of Wing VII. Open division:
Surprise the judges! Enter anything about Wing VII. This could include,
custom free missions, custom battles, graphics, etc., plus anything that
might be of great service to the wing, such as ship patches, Web pages,
etc. LC Guthwulf and AD Proton will be the judges.

Inner wing competition is in the planning stages…news on that in
the middle of the week!

Awards...
20:49 - SA Astatine [jpboyce@indigo.net.au]

The following Command Officers have been rewarded for their hard work:

Promotion to full Admiral for Operations Officer Foley. Foley has been fairly consistant in his position so far and has been a bit forgotten when it comes to appropriate rank for his position. Given the consistant service so far and the fact he's held Vice Admiral for 6 months, I believe he deserves this promotion.
Promotion to full Admiral for Security Officer Sithspawn. While SO, we've seen him deal with a number of security and behaviour issues from members with a very fine touch. SO itself has historically been a dirty job with little reward, however I believe that after 5 months as VA, Sithspawn deserves a promotion to full Admiral.
Grand Order of the Emperor (GOE) for Supreme Director Mordann. Mordann has continued to provide a consistant intelligence service for the EH, as well as deal with the additional roster work from being DB MAA. Considering the 6 month gap since his last award/promotion and his standard of work, this award is more than deserved.
Congratulations to these three persons.

Omega Commander Promoted to General
17:37 - FA Cyric [jroscoe@comcast.net]
From AD Proton: I recommend that Omega Squadron CMDR/COL Brian be promoted to the rank of General.

Colonel Brian has been a consistently active force driving Omega forward since he became CMDR of the elite squadron more than five months ago. Omega once again is tearing up the Sovereign Squadron League, and Brian himself is flying as hard or harder than ever, leading by example. Brian also is a valuable contributor to Sovereign flag officers' discussions on important issues.

GN Brians contributions to Omega and the fleet have been an example to all pilots and I concur with AD Proton that the promotion is warranted. Congrats GN Brian!

Multiplayer Competitions
05:10 - VA Khameir Sarin [khameir_sarin@yahoo.com]
As you may have noticed from the Combat Calendar, there are some new weekly competition times for this week. Night of the Monks will take place Fridays from 3 AM - 6 AM EST, hosted by LC Pickled Yoda. The Wolf's Howl will be on Saturdays and Aggressor Night on Sundays. Both will be at 8 PM - 11 PM EST, and will normally be hosted by VA Khadgar. You're welcome to use any COO authorized platforms at each of these competitions (XvT, XWA, etc.). They will all be held in #EHCOC on IRC. Khadgar will be unable to host the Saturday and Sunday competitions this week, so if you’re able to host, please contact the Combat Operations Office.

MISCELLANEOUS

Well, it's nice to be done with the last two weeks. Like an idiot, I put off one of my classes until almost the end of the semester and spent the better part of two weeks doing a semester's worth of work. I did it very well though, 94% in the class.

Also, shockingly enough, met a great girl. Been chatting with her for two weeks as of today and had dinner with her on Friday. That was fun. I bought of course. No way I'll let a girl buy me dinner unless I'm flat broke. And then, I probably wouldn't be going to dinner anyway. Too old fashioned. Here's hoping things go well with this.

I graduated from college yesterday with an Associates Degree in computer programming and a certificate in Speech Output. The certificate is for the teaching work I'm hoping to do for a living, but there's three more to do. Good grief, it took me two years to get this certificate, who knows how long it'll take to get the other three. Though the length of time was due to my instructor's schedule and stuff. No real problem there, I'm still having fun with the college stuff.

LucasArts announced Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords earlier this week. I've done some reading on the project and I'm a little worried at the fact that they've gone with someone other than BioWare to develop the game. The folks that are working on KOTOR2 are the ones responsible for Icewind Dale, and a few other good RPGs but BioWare did a great job on KOTOR and I'm worried that the sequel may not live up to it's predecessor. Ah well, wait and see I guess.

Well, I think that covers everything for the past two weeks. Off to get that comp entered for approval.

Thanks,

Colonel Josh Popelka
