ISD-II Challenge
Commodore HA Dempsey reporting
Report ID: H.AD.016
Report date: november 29th, 2020

Prologue

Dempsey was glad to be back aboard her Star Destroyer. After all this time, it still felt good to say 'her' Star Destroyer. Standing here on its bridge, high atop the super structure, she watched the empty space outside the transparisteel viewport. 'Admiral,' the comm officer interrupted her train of thought,'we have a priority request from the Naval Base. They've caught some smugglers and they're making a run for it. They're headed in our direction. they request assistance in their capture.'

Dempsey nodded. For a split second, a dozen different scenarios crossed her mind. Using the Challenge was out of the question, no self-respecting smuggler would allow himself to get caught by something as large and cumbersome as a Star Destroyer. She could order the Interdictor cruiser Fairchild to engage their gravity well projectors, but it was likely that by the time they were at full strength, the enemy had already escaped into hyperspace. Plus there was the disruption to regular travel in this system that would follow. Inferno squadron was on standard area patrol duty, but they didn't have the ability to disable any fleeing craft, and she rather did like the prospect of prisoners.

'Tell Inferno to intercept. They are to engage but not destroy the enemy,' she said. 'Let me see where we are.' The main viewscreen on the bridge turned black as only the lights of the relevant ships were shown. The enemy apparantly was using two freighter craft escorted by several fighters. The blips representing Inferno squadron moved away from the Challenge as they headed straight for the enemy ships. 'Get two assault transports into space as well,' Dempsey said. 'They should be standing by. Their mission is to apprehend any and all beings and cargo aboard those two freighters.' A second later, she turned towards the tactical station. 'What are we looking at?' She asked.

The Lieutenant at the station punched a few buttons, and three profiles appeared on the viewscreen. 'Targets A and B are armed freighter craft. one is a ZH-40 Tribune-class freighter, the other a YV-929 Corellian. They're escorted by 8 fighters, 4 are Rihkxyrk Assault fighters, the others are X-wing, a V-wing and a U-wing.' Dempsey thought for a second. Typical pirate layout, a mish mash of ships. Still, a highly dangerous combination, not the mention she hadn't seen an actual U-wing in ages.

'Signal Inferno that they are to destroy the enemy starfighters, but not that U-wing. I want that intact. Have them pund the freighters too, by the time the transports gets there, they should be nearly ready for their jump to hyperspace. Move the Challenge in to their flightpath to block their jump.' A small trmor went through the massive starship as it slowly changed its course and accelerated. Dempsey studied her bridge crew. No signs of panic or agitation. Everyone was doing their job as they were trained to do. Calm and efficient. This was good.

From across the bridge she could hear the comm chatter between the Inferno pilots, as one by one the enemy blips disappeared off the screen. As one, Inferno's blips converged on the larger of the two freighters, and started pounding the shields of the Corellian ship. Several Inferno pilots broke off, and went for the ZH-40. By the time the assault transports loaded with troppers were on the scene, both freighters had their shields reduced to almost nothing, and the transports had an easy job.

'Enemy U-wing has been disabled as well, Commodore,' came the voice of one of the bridge officers. 'Dispatching a Heavy Lifter to bring it in.' Dempsey nodded her approval. Good.

'Casualty report, Commodore,' came another voice. 'Inferno One reports Inferno Seven was destroyed by the ZH-40's main gun battery. The rest of the squadron is unharmed.' Dempsey nodded again. Losses among the pilots were to be expected of course, but this wasn't the glory days of the Empire where pilots were expendable, and for every pi9lot that got killed, a dozen new ones left the Academy. It would take some time to find a replacement.

'Have the prisoners transported to the naval base,' she said. 'The cargo aboard the freighters is to be transported here. When were done, use those two freighters for target pratice. I'm sure someone here could use some. it.

Commodore's speech

Welcome back to another Commodore report. It's been a while since you've seen one, but the database tells me you've been getting your reports on time. Kudos to my Wing Commander for that.

The main item on the agenda for today is the big Challenge wide competition, Wake Me Up When November Ends. As you may have noticed, that will be tomorrow. That means you have until midnight tomorrow CET to get your final submissions in. The online game is going great, but the Single player and Multi player games are lagging behind. Which is weird, since by nature, we are pilots! I also have received only a single fiction until now, so get those in as well. There's a whole boatload of points available there which are going to go to waste. I assume that after this, it will be a quiet next few weeks.

Just to make sure nothing slipped by this week:

  • Online game submissions received: Stryker, Talon, Silwar, Phalk, Richlet, Hermann, Marek, Neko, Thinking, NiksaVel
  • SP submissions received: Jedgar, NiksaVel
  • MP submissions received: Stryker, Talon, EvilGrin, Silwar, Jedgar

This means as far as I can tell I never saw the BSFs for TIE free #260 for LCM Marek Ny`Irfa, LC Phalk Sturm and COL Silwar Naiilo. Please get them to me ASAP.

It's been pretty quiet otherwise, so I'm afraid there's not a whole lot to report on. Get to your fighters and start your engines!

    Dempsey's Weekly Screenshots

Every week, the report will have a screenshot. Not necessarily from a Star Wars movie. First Challenge pilot to send the correct answer to the mailing list wins. Each victory earns you an IS-BR. Unless it's a 5th victory, you then get a IS-SR. Unless it's a 10th victory, which gives you an IS-GR. A 25th victory will give you an IS-PR!
Remember - your answer has to go to the list.

Wake me up when November ends

This is the big Challenge wide competition of the year. Every week we will play 4 games: Flying (Single player and Multiplayer), Movie quote trivia, Image trivia and an online game. The trivia will be played via the Timed Events option on the TC website. Screenshots for Multiplayer and online games need to be emailed to me, and for the Single player competition you can simply forward me the BSF email. Each week starts at the release of my COM report on Sunday, and ends the next Saturday at midnight CET. There is also a 5th game: Fiction. Each pilot can submit upto 3 fictions to participate, but only one fiction will be taken into consideration for the rankings (unless the total of fictions received is less than 5). For every game, each week the top 10 pilots will be awarded points: from 1st to 10th place you will earn 20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 points. With exception to the Fiction, which will only yield points at the end of the month, and for the top 5 fictions: 20, 15, 10, 5, 3 points.

Each week, every game will see its winner, with the top 2 pilots for that week earning Iron Stars (Silver and Bronze Wings/Ribbons). At the end of the competition, pilot scores will be tallied per game over all 4 weeks and the top 3 pilots win (Gold/Silver/Bronze Wings/Ribbons). The scores for each pilot will also be tallied over all submissions during the entire month, with another (Gold/Silver/Bronze Wings/Ribbons) up for grabs. There's an extra medal to be had if a single pilot manages to grab the win in 2 games, and one if a pilot manages to grab the win in 3 games. As an extra bonus, there's two more medals available: the pilot who has the highest score wins his Commander and IS-SR, while the squadrons that accumulates most points over all pilots wins its Commander an IS-GR.

    WEEK 2

Photo round This week's photo round involves Buildings that will stand the test of time. A little harder than last week, this week I will give you photos of 10 famous buildings. I just forgot what their names are, so you'll need to tell me.....

Pilot's Arena The object of the game is not to reach the highest score, or fly the most missions, or complete the most objectives. I will give you a target score. Whoever gets closest wins. This ensures that even a newbie pilot fresh out of the Academy has a shot at winning! For the MP part, you must be on the winning side of course.

Single player segment: XvT free #229; target: 11,394 pts
Multi player segment: Star Wars Squadrons: Fleet Battle mode; target: 8,258 pts

Who said it? This game revolves around movie quotes. But it won't always be as simple as identifying the movie! Even though this week that is exactly what I wish to know as we play Who said it?. This week, the objective is to tell me the name of the character who spoke these lines.

Online insanity This game will be playing on online game. The object of the game is to reach the highest score you can. Screenshots to be taken with score clearly visible of course.
This week: the Bubble Shooter: https://www.agame.com/game/bubble-shooter-classic

Musings of a madman This is not a weekly game, but this will run the entire month. Write a fiction. It can be about whatever you want it to be, feature whatever you want, and can be as long as short as you want, with any writing style you desire. The only stipulation is that somehowb it has ot feature the Challenge or one of its pilots. All submissions will be submitted to the Warden's Office at the end of the competition. You can submit up to three fictions per pilot, but each pilot is eligible for only one medal, and one set of points. If there's less than 5 pilots submitting, this last stipulation is rescinded.

    Current results:

    Top pilot: TI-40026 (64pts)
    Runner-up: Mell Kerrigan (46pts)
    3rd place: Stryker (32pts)

    Firebird: 144pts
    Inferno: 74pts
    Tempest: 66pts
    Thunder: 17pts
