TAC Report #12
REPORTING OFFICER: Admiral Pickled Yoda, Tactical Officer

Steam

Another report and another Public Service Announcement.

If you use the steam versions of TIE & friends you may have issues with using the EH Battle Launcher or EH Ship Patcher because Steam hates it when you mess with the files.

There have been reports from some pilots that you fix this by telling Steam to turn off automatic updates for those games. (Let's face it, they're not getting any official changes anyway...)

If you've been annoyed by this, try it out and let me know if this is an actual fix. If it works, we'll get it added to the new pilot resources and other documents.

If you've been annoyed by this and would like to pay money to fix the problem, try out the GOG editions instead. They seem to have been less problematic for most people.

Cryp-TAC

I think we're picking up steam. I'll have to write more reports to keep it flowing.

First: the answers. Remember, part of it is the definition or meaning, and part of it is some wordplay.

Tool found in Clapham Mercy Hospital (6) is HAMMER. The definition is Tool and the answer is found in a sequence of letters from clapHAM MERcy.

Samurai starts walking around royal residence, inspecting operational readiness (7) is WARRIOR. The definition is Samurai and the wordplay comes from the starts of the other words.

Clan el'Ghe fights opposition (9) is CHALLENGE. The definition is opposition, and it's an anagram of CLAN EL GHE as indicated by the signpost fights.

A top tip related to that last one - if you see some nonsense or something that looks like a name, it's common for that to be a way to provide the letters for an anagram. You can usually be confident it's not the definition - what would Clan el'Ghe be a clue for? Nothing, so it must be part of the wordplay.

If you've solved one, remember that I try to make them themed and so you should have a hint to what the others might be.

This week: Dempsey 2 (one answer), Plif 9 (all right), Hav 10 (all right, better handwriting).

Running total: Hav 10, Plif 9, Doyon 6, Dempsey 3, Laan 3.

=========

This week's clues:

Greek letter dictated what to do in a scull? (3)

Confused pets met squall (7)

Greed and gluttony in South India (3)

Bugs

Reminder: feel free to poke me directly via email or discord about mission critical bugs that should be fixed. The database has a long queue, but you can jump it.

Since the last report, I've updated XWA DB 1 and XvT TC 22 with new versions to fix issues that prevented mission completion.

Projects

My X-Wing and XWA pilot file reading code is pretty solid now and very useful for processing the TAC queue, which has been very busy from RtF.

RtF itself has kept me busy. I love the scoring system giving incentive to try non-TIE platforms - I've flown more XWA and XvT than I have done in years.
