COMMENTARIES
THE NEW EMPIRE (Continuation)

- This is Gamma 3-2, at shooting position!…- I announced – while my fighter-bomber was shaken by the impacts of the enemy lasers – Torpedoes out!… I quickly took my fighter-bomber out of the course starting desperate evasive maneuvers among laser beams while I observed the two torpedoes I had shot. They both travelled at high speed spinning and describing a light curve looking for their aims. An advanced explosion indicated me that one of them had been reached by enemy batteries. The other one was able to go across the enemy fire, reaching the back part of the frigate and producing an explosion that swept away part of the enemy turrets. While I was taking the course looking for Lieutenant Von Predator, nine explosions indicated me that O’Ryan had reached his objectives, too.
Nearby I saw Lieutenant Von Predator’s Tie bomber. I lightly moved until I flew next to him.

- Report your state, Sublieutenant – he ordered.
- Gamma 3-2, clear way, Sir! My shields are at a 75% condition, but the spaceship is completely operative. I could launch the attack.
- OK and O’Ryan…?

I adjusted the sensor in my helmet to maximum. Faraway, I could see the distinctive shape of a fighter-bomber coming into our direction. The structure of its hull showed severe damages and the displacement speed was lightly slower than normal. However, I wasn’t worried about it but the facts that, from a distance, some A-Wing aircrafts were getting closer.

- He’s joining to us, Sir!… It’s better to start our attack. Rebel fighter-bombers are coming to us!
- OK, Branet! Let’s finish this once and for all.

Von Predator lightly bowed his fighter-bomber to immediately accelerate to maximum speed. I had to take the command lever with both hands to follow the evolutions that the Lieutenant had started executing, moving to right and left among the enemy lasers and going through them to look for the clear way area we made in our last attack. The frigate shadow was becoming bigger as we got closer, starting to cover the horizon. Finally, Von Predator loosed two space bombs, while he took his fighter-bomber out of course. I piloted as well as I could trying to reach Lieutenant’s spaceship.

- Branet, trace the bombs course and report the state! –He ordered, as the same time he made evasive maneuvers and started heading for the Intrepid.

Through my helmet screen, I could observe the space bombs displacement. With a constant rotation on their central axel, both projectiles started their descent drawing a curve, which made larger as they got closer the target area, without being hit by any enemy turret. Finally, when they got close to the objective, they violently accelerated hitting the frigate’s rear engines. A big flame and a huge sparkle were reflected on my helmet, which instantly made me become blind. Almost at the same time, I started collecting the attack’s data.

- I’ve already got the results, Sir!…Damn! My readings indicate just a little damage at a 15%. But I’m sure that projectiles were well directed!…
- OK Branet, I’ve got the same data! Give me some time for a second analysis!

While I waited for my Lieutenant’s instructions, I started studying the enemy frigate. Its dimensions were almost the double of that kind of spaceship, with a system of defensive turrets extremely numerous. The records reflected on my helmet indicated a spaceship with an electromagnetic shields system that completely covered it which explained the little effectiveness of the space bombs. An inquiry into the surface of its hull showed clear evidence of proton torpedoes impacts, which indicated that bombers belonging to another squadrons could discharge their projectiles. But the effect of those attacks against the frigate proved to be almost fruitless. This result took me to develop an analysis of the space surrounding the frigate. Lots of fragments spread everywhere revealed a hard and bloody fight, whose origin I immediately began to study. The arrangement of this fragments showed a route: first an approach route, then a temporary stop one and finally an attempt to change to an opposite course. Immediately afterwards, the analysis of the remains confirmed the hidden fear that started arising from me. Most of these fragments belonged to our own fighter-bombers. Most of them could take enough distance to discharge their torpedoes, but when trying to take the route back to the Intrepid, they had been reached either by the turrets of the frigate or by the enemy interceptors. The scene was about an 80% of our bombers destructed. This wouldn’t allow a new assault wave…

- Branet!…
- Sir!…
- I’ve already got my analysis!… You surely have got the same conclusion than me!…

La Forge’s voice had taken a peremptory tone. I understood the implications of the actions to follow. There simply wasn’t any other choice.

- Ok, Sir!… I still have two torpedoes left and my shields can resist a second round of lasers, but I will first have to clear the way from enemy fighter-bombers!…
- Ok, Branet!… I’ve got two space bombs!… But I will have to be sure to cause the biggest damage as possible. I’m going to perform a grazing flight over the frigate and I will get loose the bombs to the minimum distance as possible. If you succeed in neutralizing the enemy interceptors, help me!… We won’t have a second chance, Sublieutenant. Good luck!…
- Good luck, Sir!…

A strong engine roar and a vibration that shook my spaceship followed his farewell. While I observed how the Lieutenant moved away at a growing speed, I increased the shields power and violently took my fighter-bomber out of the course. Von Predator and I perfectly well understood that our action was a desperate bet. If I were able to neutralize the enemy fighter-bombers with my ship, which was in fact very difficult, we would face a hellish enemy lasers rain, which would be just under us. And the vision of the battlefield in which my companions acted wasn’t propitious. For the moment, our squadrons had managed to avoid the major part of the enemy interceptor’s attention but the fragile front they had established started getting slowly closer to the frigate, which would be in the end fateful. If we fell under their turrets’ operating range our offensive actions would fail, and we would miss the possibility to neutralize it. If the frigate was able to put in motion, it could be able to initiate a direct attack against our destructor without any impediment.

I completely accelerated. Now I could only trust on destiny. The course of the future events seemed to foretell a hesitant horizon, and our own effort only would be able perhaps to give a solution…

End of the first book.

  • TIE Corps Pilot League
Like TCoP, the Pilot League is a single-player comp taking place every other week. The difference here is that pilots have a rolling handicap. Each round, the pilot with the highest handicap score (expressed as a percentage of the high score) in each platform will earn 4 points. The next highest score will earn 3, the next highest 2, and all other submissions will earn 1. If the winning pilot in a platform also beat the high score (without the handicap added), that pilot will earn 5 points for that platform.

  • TIE Corps on Recon
