Communications Officer Report #7
Fleet Admiral La'an, 26 Apr 22
Welcome all to another COMM report, covering the 2 weeks since my last formal submission. The recent TC meeting highlighted a number of recent incidences of bad feeling on Discord, primarily driven by members of opposing ships engaging in banter that then either escalated or was misconstrued by others. We've all been around long enough to recognise that we all have different views, different tolerances and very different opinions - I'd remind all members that this needs to be considered when we interact. A joke made by one can easily be taken as an insult or slight by another, often someone unrelated who may not be aware of the context or previous history and feel obliged to respond - at which point it can often kick off. We're fortunate at present to include a number of other elements, particularly from the SWS community, across all 3 ships - often clustered in specific squadrons because why wouldn't you wish to fly alongside your friends? What many members may not be aware of is that those flying with an [EH] tag are often very familiar, on good terms, or even also members of those other organisations. As such a lot of back and forth references events or history that the rest of us are blind to - what's the point I'm making? On PUBLIC channels be mindful of making comments, choosing provocative memes, images or language that could be readily misconstrued. More often than not these comments are made in good humour, but while some members may get it others won't and we need to all be mindful of what we put out into the world. Behind closed doors or in squadron or ship channels, each CMDR or COM sets the tone and alters it/controls it to match that of their people, but what flys in a private channel won't always translate well.

On which note, I would remind all members that if they encounter issues with individuals, please rise above - don't feed the troll, don't start the argument, simply report problems and allow the chain of command to deal with it. If content or comments make you uncomfortable and you're not confident in challenging it, approach an admin and allow us to do our jobs, rather than suffering in silence. I've pulled together a dedicated COMM/COM channel to allow us to highlight issues and ensure they aren't being ignored or not dealt with. If a CoC breach occurs, I or another admin will descend like a wrathful god, but I would rather that all members and the leadership in particular set and maintain a culture that lets us challenge issues before they escalate further. I'm not expecting everyone to be friends, but basic civility is expected as a bare minimum and if you wish to avoid interaction with some people... avoid them and focus on enjoying what the EH or TC offers you.
Platforms and Policies
All members are reminded of the importance of following the agreed EH Code of Conduct, an up to date issues of which can be found at the following link - EH CoC

The primary platform for communications within the TC and wider EH remains Discord, with the TC, DB and HF maintaining their own servers. All are official EH channels and per the above all members and guests are expected to maintain the family friendly, positive environment that we've been able to sustain. Any individual wishing to join in with the conversation need only select the link or type 'ehtc.chat' into their browser - use of mailing lists continues to dwindle, so continued failure to use Discord will only limit your ability to understand or take part in the club's activities.
View from the ARQ Herald

La'an wearily wiped the last dataslate of its contents, throwing it onto a pile that had grown steadily over the last few hours. Report after report detailed issues and equipment challenges, with the occasional bright spot where new processes or procedures had identified opportunities for optimisation. While grateful for the robust testing of his area of control, it had raised as many questions as answers and his teams would be busy for weeks if not months ahead.

Standing and stretching out, he adjusted the tunic of his duty uniform and exited his compact ready room at the rear of the Herald's bridge, glancing at the active holonet receiver and seeing a number of familiar faces reporting in to the ship's operations officer. All were senior communication engineers assigned to ISDIIs in the TC and betrayed the ruffled, sleepless look of teams being kept busy by the ongoing wargame. Many of them had probably assumed an assignment in communications would be a quiet posting, away from the rigour and demand of the main engine spaces, reactor halls or weapons and sensor systems. He smiled, pacing to the main viewport and staring into space. More fool them...

Closing Thoughts

If there are ever issues or concerns, questions or feedback, all are welcome to contact me directly in any of the EH servers, or another admin should I not be available. Until then,

End transmission.
