EAGLE SQUADRON NEWS

The roster has swelled, and there are officially no more bunks available in the Eagle quarters.

A very warm welcome to our two newest pilots, Lt Yubel Cobblepot and SL Stralen. There are some rumours that the newly-appointed Lt is a direct descendant of the Gothem Cobblepots. Enquiries are ongoing, if it turns out to be true, the Challenge bar tab will be duly invoiced to Yubel for the entirety of ABY 30.

The Eagle year in review ends on a high note.

We saw our original Commander, Colonel Talon Jade, quietly retire to the reserves after a long and decorated career. His replacement, Colonel Horus Blackheart, filled the big shoes and oversaw a return to form with Squadron Remobilisation III. The venerable Colonel took his own leave of absence, before advising on his eventual transfer to Alpha squadron, as he wanted to catch up on his reading and found that the Infiltrator Wing was being deployed in the middle of a chapter.

Imperial Storm III and RtF2021 were some serious revelations for the pilots of Eagle. Through lucky recruitment of some fiercely competitive pilots, Eagle played a core role in the ISD-II Challenge's back-to-back victories for both competitions. Despite some obvious setbacks (Cupcake's hyperdrive, Xylo's comms, the Tusorix incident), it was a glorious period of hard-fought battles and narrow losses, with the deployment of several innovative tactics that pushed the Squadron into increasingly unfamiliar, but well-earned, territory.

Xylo Pethtel was promoted to Squadron Executive Officer, earning a slew of stars along the way, and promoted to the rank of full Commander. Eagle cannot thank the young SQXO enough, he has really put in the hard yards and taken the leadership mantle with the appropriate level of gravitas that such a position is due. LCM Critical Hit played his part as Flight Leader; Cupcake earned his own promotion to Commander off the back of sustained older-sim usage and mentoring of the newer pilots.

Later in the year, we were joined by a flurry of some top-grade talent. LCM SirCaleb quickly earned his reputation as a dogfighter of devastating skill; Lt Drummer 'the Gunner' Nate stepped outside of his comfort zone and made the Y-wing his own; Lt jospence demonstrated the unnerving power of the B-wing in an imperious Imperial pilot's hands; Lt Aqua Valkyrie ratcheted up Legion after Legion, representing Eagle and matching it across all of the squadrons. Lt AyePeaBee has unfortunately not responded to ongoing calls, and rumours that he has suffered a catastrophic starfighter failure in an ill-travelled system in the Outer Regions may be well-founded. We even had the elusive Lt K Perkis show up after a heavy night on the Chalquilla, to remind us all that Challenge Cantina has set closing hours for very good reason. One should be able to find the Lieutenant continuing to clean the emergency hangar bay.

Suffice to say, it has been an exceptional year. Personally, it has been an honour to be CMDR of Eagle. My job has been made significantly easier by the support of my FLs; an engaged group of Challenge CMDRs to bounce ideas off; and a CHALCOM who has solid expectations of his pilots without artificially forcing them on any of us.

I asked the SQXO to contribute something to the WSR:

'Eagle Squadron has gone through a lot of change this year, ain't that the motto of the whole dang 365 days? What we've remained despite it all is a community committed to being just that, a place, a group by and through which we grow together. Wherever we came from, wherever we go, wherever we came from Cotton eyed Joe-Spence.

We were middling, languishing with to the world as we trudged through the middle of the year, the barracks held barely a whisper of echo, but we still carried our spirits, that fervor in flight just waiting for their chance to spring and soar. It took some unfortunate circumstances to rip us all out of that state, but just in time for Imperial Storm, we appropriately stormed out of our quarters and found ourselves, what was to be the start of a seriously strong showing from the squadron during RtF. We sat dead middle place, just a couple hundred points behind from running squadrons, and out performing all expectations of a squadron no one had heard from in such a long time. We discovered, cooperated, and became ourselves. If nothing else we can be proud of that barring everything else

It's been weeks since the high of that achievement, and now we stand here, fully staffed, fully stocked, and fully stoked to see where we go now. Eagle Squadron may never be the top competitive squadron, on the forefront of the fight, but we can make it clear who we are as a community, and provide that support that everyone can appreciate. We are the Infiltrator wing, but we need not just infiltrate the enemy. We can diffuse and infiltrate the TIE Corps, part of what makes our greater community so great is precisely the people. So get out there! Go get em! And go show the world what Eagle Squadron can Soar to.'

I honestly couldn't have said that better myself. This will, unfortunately, be my last WSR for the year, as I won't be in a position to release one this time next week (the Ashes Third Test awaits). To all of you TCers, merry Chissy.

CLOSING COMMENTS

I recall that my X-wing needed a wash. It hasn't been. I will be having stern talks with my FLs. I might need to extend this 'wash' out to a cut-and-polish, but I'm unsure if laser scorch marks will actually buff out.

The halls were NOT decked out with boughs of Ergesh. The accompanying smell of ammonia was considered ill-advised, and CHALCOM shot the idea down. Good thing too, as CHALCOM and the venerable Major Honsou don't need any further ceiling-hung plants to make out under.

I remain, as always, your humble servant,
