THE NEW EMPIRE (Continuation)
V.
Darkness inside the Tie was almost absolute. The switchboard was
only lightly illuminated, and through computers’ screens all control
data of the ship were reflected. Simultaneously, the tactical orders
and the attack plan were being reflected on my helmet, which
indicated that I should go along with my other companions.
I was assigned to Gamma 3-2 wing, whose leader was Lieutenant La
Forge, with position 3-1. O’Ryan took position 3-3, Sublieutenant
Eldanor position 3-4 and Sublieutenant Stack position 3-5.
Lieutenant Von Predator had the most difficult mission. He was
assigned to discharge space bombs near the propelling nozzle of the
rebel frigate. The rest of us was assigned to attack the laser
turrets with torpedoes, which were defending that position. We had
to do it before Lieutenant Von Predator got loose the bombs in order
to leave him the way free. The clearness of these orders being
recorded in my brain was marvellous. I was perceiving the complete
meaning of the operations, as well as the possible options in case
of they couldn’t be fulfilled.
Our squadron’s leader, Captain D.T. Hammer, wouldn’t attack with
bombers. He would have the mission of intercepting and escorting the
bombers, clearing the way to the enemy’s frigate. The other
squadrons would do the same.
While receiving this information, I heard a loud noise and perceived
a vibration in my ship. Then I felt the sensation that it was slowly
being moved…
- Pay attention gentlemen! Put in operation your propelling system –
Von Predator was strongly heard through our headphones- I was told
that our fighter-bombers have disarticulated the new rebel attack.
It’s our turn now…
At the moment, I felt my aircraft got free, which I could verify
through my instruments.
- OK, my fellows – Von Predator answered- you can now activate the
special sight in your helmets.
Darkness disappeared. An amazing panoramic sight was spread out in
front of me and my surprised senses. The whole outline of my
spaceship became translucid in a 360º range, leaving the switchboard
visible only as it was suspended in vacuo.
Dozens of Ties slid in the space in perfect formation all around me.
Far away, I could see intermittent lightnings as white and thin
wounds in the darkness. A battle was taking place in front of us.
I had no time to feel the vertigo. While I quickly slid across the
space along with our squadrons, the sensors in my spaceship started
compiling all the information around me. This information started
being processed by my mind through the increased senses of my helmet.
A short sight of the Intrepid was displayed and I could observe many
serious damages on the destroyer’s hull. They were produced by the
impact of several torpedoes. This vision fleetly analysed the
numerous fragments floating around the Intrepid, which turned on
themselves, and around the destroyer as if they were small worlds. A
shiver crossed my spine when I identified the origin of these pieces.
Some of them were rests of uncountable carbonized and wrung imperial
Ties and enemy’s fighter-bombers. But others were the inert bodies
of numerous pilots, which lost floated in the space…now their
unexpected sepulchre…
The vision was interrupted by Captain D.T. Hammer’s voice, who got
in touch with our squadron through subspace wave.
- Attention, bombers, this is Gamma leader. Adjust your shields to
maximum and on alert. Tracking system on line and objective
identified…
- This is Gamma 3-2, shields to maximum and on alert –I answered-
turning on the tracking sensors.
- Gamma 3-3, shields activated and establishing objective…
- Gamma 3-4… shields to maximum… objective identified and tracking
system on line…
- This is Gamma 3-5, shields to maximum and objective fixed…
tracking system on line…
- OK, Gamma 3…-D.T.Hammer answered- these are last instructions… You
must assume evasive attitude… I repeat, evasive. Everybody has to
fulfil his objectives. Once your bombs have been discharged, you
must immediately return to the Intrepid along with the other fighter-bombers
in order to reload and start a new attack wave. This is very
important since we don’t have many bombers to answer the attack of
the enemy’s frigate. Gamma 3-1… from this moment you have
independent command on your attack wing. Gamma leader over…
Silence came back all around. Far away, the distinctive silhouette
of the enemy’s frigate started being seen. Numerous flashlights
surrounded it and small dark shapes could be seen around it. I
adjusted my sensors to maximum. Against the endless and dark further
end of the space, some of these flashlights were blended with the
twinkle of the stars. Meanwhile, I could notice some groups being
loose among the small shapes surrounding the frigate, which came
quickly against us.
