SQUADRON COMMANDER'S CORNER
-----EPISODE V: MILES TO GO-----

Several hours later: Still in the brig aboard ISDII Challenge

The world was dark. The world was dark and spinning. The world was dark, and spinning, and it tasted like copper and Corellian whiskey. There was this unusual sound, like a flatspotted wheel. Its syncopated refrain repeated, 'ko-man-da-ran-teel, ko-man-da-ran-teel, ko-man-da-ran-teel...'

'Commander Antiel,' thrummed a voice from the swirling darkness. I tried to sit up, but I couldn't find my bearings.

'Commander Antiel,' the voice repeated, still soft but betraying some edge this time. I tried to blink my eyes open, but they didn't respond. Then, slowly, one eyelid begrudgingly lifted.

Whuh? I thought, trying to gather my equilibrium. I felt the cold duracrete floor against my squished nose, and I smelled sweet pipe smoke.

'Lieutenant Yokcha,' the voice called to my cell-mate. 'Help him to his seat.'

As I struggled on the floor, Adwan Yokcha's furry arms hefted me up onto the durasteel bench.

There must be something wrong with the ship, I thought. We're spinning into oblivion!

'Commander Antiel, can you see me?' asked the disembodied voice. I squinted an eye through the blinding light and recognized the shadow of a human standing in a triumphant pose beyond the cell's bars.

'Gerg dermus brydd,' I mumbled. Yokcha gave me a hard shake and I slumped against the wall.

'Ugh, OK, OK,' I said, pawing my eyes as I tried to scrape the stale taste off of my tongue. 'Yeah, I can see you,' I said.

'Excellent,' said the shadowy form. 'We don't have very much time to prepare, I'm afraid, so we will have to get started straight away. Unfortunately, we'll have to work with these bars between us, but that shouldn't prove too difficult.'

'Huh?' I asked.

'Commander, I'm here regarding your court martial. I received your message, and I came as soon as I could.'

'Court martial...' I repeated mindlessly. The room continued to spin, and it felt like my tongue was too big for my mouth.

'Yokcha, how much of that bottle did he drink?'

Yokcha shook the empty whiskey bottle in the universal symbol of he-drank-the-whole-damn-thing.

'That's good, very good,' said the voice. 'Perfect, actually.'

The voice sounded familiar: a knowing, cut-glass lilt that I recognized.

'Admiral?' I sputtered. 'Admiral Prower?' I opened both eyes, and the silhouette came into focus.

'The very same!' he proclaimed. 'I see you enjoyed my pre-trial present.' He gestured toward the empty bottle with his pipe.

'Ugh,' I said, slumping forward. 'Uh, yeah, it was wonderful. Thank you. I wish I'd saved some for you.'

'Nonsense,' Prower said. 'You did exactly as I anticipated.'

'Huh?' I said. My vision lagged as I swiveled my head to follow the admiral's gesticulations.

'I love a good challenge, my boy,' said Prower. 'Can't have a trial for the ages without suitable drama!'

I swallowed hard. 'With respect, admiral, it would help if you slowed down a bit,' I said. 'I'm having trouble following you.'

'Oh, of course,' said Prower. 'Of course.' He leaned a shoulder against the bars and puffed his pipe. The billow of smoke seemed endless.

'Your case is quite simple,' said Prower. 'Too simple. Boringly simple. Absolutely uninteresting.'

'So you believe I'm innocent?'

Prower snorted.

'Naturally. It's clear as day,' he said. 'But where's the fun in that?'

The fun would be getting to go home, I thought.

'So the whiskey was what? A celebration before the trial?' I asked.

'Not quite,' said Prower. 'I knew you would be unable to resist my gift. And I knew that the guards would fall for my elaborate ruse.' He pointed his elbow at a crumpled box in the corner of the cell labeled Not Corellian Whiskey.

I shook my head. 'It still doesn't make sense.'

Prower knelt beside the bars and peered in like a fox.

'What you did out there was admirable, Antiel,' he said. 'Medal-worthy, even. I'm proud to say you were one of my pilots. But the days of drawn-out litigation are history for the TIE Corps. A court martial is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an advocate these days, and I had to put a few plans into motion to make this trial a little more exciting. Surely you understand.'

'Sounds like you've been watching too much Matlock, sir,' I said. Prower snickered. I doubled over and wretched over the edge of the bench.

'You said 'a few plans,'' I said, wiping my mouth. 'Would it risk the integrity of the trial to let your client know what you've been up to?'

'Fair is fair,' said Prower. 'The first is obvious; I'll be defending a hopeless drunk so dasdarly he managed to find Corellian whiskey in the brig of the Challenge.'

'Makes sense,' I hiccupped. 'But I have a feeling there's more.'

'Oh yes,' said Prower. 'We must leave some secrets for examination, of course, but suffice it to say that someone has spread the vicious rumor that one of both of you are rebel insurgents intent on destroying the Emperor's Hammer.'

I choked and Yokcha growled.

'Yes, a bit heavy-handed, I know,' said Prower. 'But keep in mind I had limited time to act. Don't worry; there's more to come.'

Prower looked over his shoulder at the growing sound of coordinated stormtrooper boots clunking in the corridor.

'Right on queue,' said Prower.

A trio of stormtroopers halted abruptly at the cell door.

'Prisoners one-three-oh-two-oh and five-five-six-two-six, transfer to the courtroom for your court martial.'

'Right,' I said as Yokcha lifted me to my feet. 'Here we go.'

CLOSING COMMENTS
Delta has moved ahead of Sin in the RtF for now, but our fair squadron continues to hold onto 5th place. The credit for keeping the squad afrload is largely due to MAJ Earnim Branet who racked up an impressive 100 Legions of Skirmish this week. Your efforts are not going unnoticed, major.

Just for fun, I submitted some new Sin squadron patch ideas for graphics. Many of you know that I designed the most recent Sin patch back in 2014. I'm proud of that design, but I wanted to see what the skull-in-a-TIE-bucket logo looked like on a more traditional fighter squadron patch. I plan to share these designs with you after RtF and put it to a vote.

For Sin,
