Unfortunately, with TFTC actively still under development, a person's experience playing these missions is going to vary based on what version they're playing. I wish I could know what version everyone else played. I'm running 1.3.3, and while there is a lot from a technical and visual level that is absolutely incredible, and should mark this battle as the crown gem of the TFTC experience... as of 1.3.3, it's horrible.
I'll give a pass to Mission #1, which is very long and epic, and can be a bit challenging (you can get swarmed by T/As with missiles over twenty minutes in, even on Easy). Hard but awesome is fine. Mission #2 in the current state is completely broken. The ship you are tasked to protect will be destroyed within 30-60 seconds after your hyperspace jump, quickly overrun by mid-sized cruisers. Mission #3 is not any better, with the two ISDs you're tasked with protecting (Majesty and Stalwart) often times being easily overrun by capital ships you have no hopes of stopping. I also watched the Stalwart just explode at the end of a mission, no enemies in sight, no reason for this to happen.
I'm glad folks have had a great experience with this one. I was ready to go crazy for it after Mission #1. I'll be happy to adjust my rating down the road if these issues are fixed, but at the moment I think I'm being exceedingly kind giving it as high of a ranking as I have. In its current state, it deserves far less, despite the technical dazzles of what have been achieved.
I had no idea how short this battle was prior to playing it, but it's definitely worth it! Flying the T/D with the TFTC stats is just silly, but silly fun! Likewise, playing in orbit of so many gorgeously-done planet boxes and watching Death Squadron appear over Coruscant are definitely among the highlights of my gaming career! I'm only sad that there's only one more battle left in the Reimagined Campaign!
Every single battle of TFTC-R is an abolute masterpiece. As if the original TIE-Fighter was not one of the best games ever conceived, TFTC-R tops it - on every single mission. It is not only that the graphics, sound and joystick support cababilities were brought today's standards with underlying XWAU package. TFTC-Reimangined also set out to redisgn the original TF missions reimagining what they could have looked like if it wasn't for TF's 1994 engine limitations (e.g. only ~30 ships in space at any given time) yielding huge battles which truely make you feel as part of a mighty imperial war machine rather than a lonely TIE Fighter pilot taking on the galaxy. They even did full voice acting, remastering of the soundtrack and ironed out some story quirks - it is insane. They did what they set out to do - mission accomplished - and then some!
Wow. Talk about a target-rich environment! Mission 1 is an absolutely hectic, 20 minute battle that strained my computer. Somewhere in the middle of it you are introduced to some Hutt fighters, though they don't leave a lasting impression other than of fragility.
Combining I think 3 classic TIE missions into one is epic, but I think Zaarin's betrayal at the end loses some impact becuase you're too busy to absorb it. I'm not sure if the low visibility in mission 2 is entirely deliberate but it certainly feels sinister.
In the last mission I finished with the ISD Majestic on just 6 hull, so that was definitely a tense one.
n.b. This is a one-off exemption to the normal TAC policy that a battle should have at least 4 missions
So battle 7 seemed short. One of these missions, the first in the TIE Defender was out in the middle of nowhere which meant there was no lighting. Was very hard to visually target enemies and had to rely upon my HUD. Though, as the missions shift into Imperial vs Imperial, I have to rely on my HUD more and more since it's hard to tell who is a friend and who is an enemy!
They definitely wanted to pull all the plot threads together for this last battle. Vader, Palpatine, and Thrawn, all on Coruscant! The defender was a beast, easily wrecking the TIE Avengers. I did enjoy having to face off against the Decimators. I do like how the ships I have flown in the X-Wing miniatures games have shown up in TFTC-R. Some of the pirates in previous battles were also ships from the miniatures game and that brings a smile to my face.
