In the year 2023, you have three options for how to play this battle:
1) X-Wing Disk using the E-Wing patch for X-Wing Disk
2) X-Wing CD using the E-Wing patch for X-Wing CD
3) No patch, platform of your choice (probably X-Wing 95)
Anyone looking to play this battle in 2023 onwards should go with option (3), but this battle is intended for option (2). The E-Wing patch for X-Wing Disk made cosmetic changes but didn't do much for functionality. The E-Wing patch for X-Wing CD didn't have the cosmetic changes, but DID have functionality changes (a three-pronged turbo-charged laser). Unfortunately, it inadvertently makes ALL ships have that turbo-charged feature, which is arguably a hack.
I thought it was pretty cool when I came across it on the internet in the nineties, and it's what first alerted me to the Emperor's Hammer as a club, so I'm grateful for that. It motivated me to try to run it for nostalgia sake twenty five years later. But to say it hasn't aged well is a wild understatement.
In interest of fairness, I flipped this patch on for the E-Wing missions (which are specifically designed for it) and flipped it off for the regular missions. I still would have been much, much better off ignoring it entirely, and recommend any one looking at this now to do the same.
Otherwise, it's an OK battle. It would be better if it didn't use the E-Wings, particularly because they're only used for 2 of the 6 missions. Those missions will be a bit tougher without the supercharged turbo laser, but by no means insurmountable.
That's a mediocre battle that for most of its part suffers the 'grand battle' syndrome. I think only the first two missions were more tactical in their approach, even though like the rest of them it was just 'wipe them all out'. This battle requires the E-Wing patch, which is serious pain in the back to install on new systems. I have X-Wing from steam and the only version I managed to get it working for, was the DOS version. Patching the remastered version worked in theory but the game crashed shortly after the mission start. I probably spent more time patching than playing. It does not affect the battle's score though, but until X-Wing patches are integrated into EH patcher, feel free to sit this one out.

Installation: ---------------------- note: the original mission files will be overwritten, back up any files with the same names. X-Wing CD Installation: 1. Download and install XCD from the SCO Site (http://sco.minos.net), files archive, the edittors section. (6k.) This will let you run custom missions. There is a full guide available at the SCO site as well. 2. Put the *.BRF and *.XWI files in your new "C:\Mission" folder and use XCD to start X-Wing CD. Create a new pilot based on your pin and the battle's type and name. For example: 2883tc01.plt if I would be flying the first XW-TC battle. 3. Fly the first 6 "Historical" missions. X-Wing 95/Disk Installation: 1. Run full install of the game so the mission files will be on your hard drive. The game will take it's mission information by preference from the harddisc, but might still give a warning. In that case - Ignore. 2. Locate your X-W Directory and open the folder labeled "Mission", or "Classic" in X-W95. Copy the *.xwi, *.brf files of this custom battle into it. 3. Create a new pilot based on your pin and the battle's type and name. For example: 2883tc01.plt if I would be flying the first XW-TC battle. 4. Fly the first 6 "Historical" missions.
