SIN CMDR: MAJ Hav Antiel REPORT DATE: 15 October 2017 |
|
This weekend, I had a few friends over to play the X-Wing Miniatures game. Although I've had the game for almost two years, this was only the third time I've played it. I have the three starfighters that came with the base game (one X-Wing and two TIE/LN fighters) plus my friend's A-Wing and YT-1300 ('No, it's not the Falcon!) and my own personal ship, the TIE/IN interceptor Pink Bantha. I controlled the three unshielded Imperial craft while my three friends controlled the A-Wing, X-Wing, and YT-1300 (Callsign 'Whatapieceofjunk'). It soon became clear that, despite having some of the most manueverable craft on the board, the odds were not in my favor. I landed some lucky rolls and made some bold moves that put the enemy square in my sights, but it wasn't enough to stave off elimination. In the end, it was the YT-1300's single dice roll that killed my final craft. Ugh. It was woefully apparent that my unshielded craft were at a real disadvantage. The TIE/ln could be destroyed in a single roll from the A-Wing, whereas it would take two lucky rolls from my fighter to wipe out the A-Wing. 'Why didn't the Empire spring for shields?' my friend asked. 'Were they really that stingy?' 'They weren't stingy,' I said defensively. 'They'd send 1,000s of these TIE fighters into battle.' 'Yeah, but imagine if they'd put shields on them. They'd be unstoppable.' Thus, I began my fruitless attempt to explain the Empire's strategy of 'disposable fighters.' Attempt #1: 'Aren't endless slices of not-so-good pizza better than one slice of really great pizza?' Response: 'Nope. Better pizza for the win.' Attempt #2: 'Imagine 1,000 TIEs flying straight at you. Wouldn't you be terrified?' Response: 'Did the TIE fighters even kill a single Rebel in the original trilogy?' 'Well, um... They did shoot down Jek Porkins over the Death Star.' 'We rest our case.' Attempt #3: 'OK, fine. The answer is 'for plot reasons.'' The heroes shoot down faceless drones. Response: 'Ding ding ding! we have a winner!' Ugh. I need to stop hanging out with those rebel sympathizers. |

I was happy to see continued Sin participation in TIE Corps on Patrol this week. I was finally able to complete my first XvT and XWA missions in time for TCoP, but my scores were not enough to beat LCM Rando or our SOO, RA Pete Mitchell. LC Branet and I traded third and fourth place on the XvT and XWA missions, respectively. After spending so much time flying TIE Fighter, I was truly surprised by the pace of X-Wing Alliance. So many small differences... It's going to take a lot of getting used to! I've had one response regarding Sin Squadron competition ideas for 2018 (Thank you, LC Branet!). Here are some of the ideas that I've come up with:
