I spent the last five days completing TIE-TC 201: Quarga's Bounty: The Life and Death of COL Beef. It was absolutely insane. To begin with, it has 30 missions spread across five battles. It's beyond epic. The missions had some truly unique and innovative features (e.g. custom spacestations composed of multiple CRLs and CRVs, a missile boat with an escape pod, and hideouts that appear when you destroy 'holographic projectors'). The storyline was engaging, and even though I was just trying to spam my way through, I stopped to read all of the briefings to keep track of what was going on with the characters. However, some of the missions were frustrating and difficult. I spent several hours on one mission alone, and that was with invulnerability on! Some mission designers seem to take pride in creating overly difficult missions, but difficulty does not equal great design. Flying TIE-TC 201 made me wonder about COL Beef. Over the course of 30 missions, I developed a good sense of his personality and backstory (including his 'demise'), but it's a shame that there's no historical information about Beef in the database. I guess that's one of the wonderful things about these old custom missions; they record the history of the TC and its pilots. (Note: One mission had a reference to 'Ship Doctor Plif.' I wonder what that was all about...) That makes me want to create a mission recording my story. But trust me, it won't be 30 missions. |
